First time with a single-shot, in this case ‪@neutral_af‬ 's Martinistutzer single-shot Martini falling block target rifle from back in the day, chambered in 7.5x55 mm GP11!
How did we get on with this puppy?

You mentioned shooting the BSA .22 Martini whilst you were at school. I kind of did the similar, in that a friend and i would go down to Altrincham range after school( no idea if its still there) pay our money and shoot the same type of rifle. Great days, many many yrs ago now.

My first rifle was a left-handed BSA Martini International Mk II. When I started shooting on my high school shooting team, I was limited to the team rifles. Due to my southpawness and sinister eye, only rifle I could shoot without breaking position was our only shortened Winchester 40x, which was in high demand by other shorter statured shooters. Another lefty shooter in our shooting league took pity on me, and sold me his lefty Martini for the princely sum of $400, complete with Parker-Hale diopter sights, a custom thumbhole stock, and adustable buttplate and arm hook. He gave me a good deal, which he put towards a lefty Anschutz free rifle. I used for three years of junior competition, and it will still outshoot me….

😅Superb quality Swiss rifles made by Haemerli & Hausch in Lensbourg in a range of styles, there should be an H&H mark somewhere. Retailed through small town gunshops who added their names to the action, mine is in 7.5x53.5mm by RYCHNER of AARAU near Lucerne. Grab one if you get the chance!

Achieving 13 rounds in a minute would have been plenty quick in the 1870s. This was perhaps the great advantage of the Martini-Henry during one of its early deployments, which was to quell a Malay rebellion against British rule in the state of Perak (now part of Malaysia) in 1875. Even then, it was not exactly a campaign won by sheer firepower alone since the rebels managed a few victories with muskets, swivel guns, bladed weapons of all types, and sheer determination. It might be a small war when it comes to other conflicts the Martini-Henry was used but being one of the first, many lessons were probably learned.

I have an idea for a Martini Mad Minute: You start with a Martini - shaken not striired - and then shoot a Martini. Repeat process as fast as you can for 60 seconds. Yes, I know drinking and shooting is a bad idea but i never said i got a good idea.

i grew up with those little BSA Martinis my grandad had three of the things if I remember rightly, one of the first things I shot, I remember they had the distressing tendency of pulling a chambered bullet if you had to unload a live round leaving the bullet in the leade which could have had fun consequences

Compared to the Martini all of the contemporary actions such as the Springfield Trapdoor or Remington Rolling Block all look positively exhausting to use in action. The Martini just flows a lot better ergonomically with greater economy of movement.

I'm curious about why you don't use a sling, on suitable rifles for your Mad Minutes. A M1917 sling is a wonderful tool, when used well...

Cos use of the sling to support the rifle was expressly forbidden in the 1909 Musketry Regulations which were the training materials in the era from which the Mad Minute myths derive

By the post-WW2 pams it was OK for use in competition, but not in training. I share the view that it has no place in training the battlefield shot or on the battlefield, and I grew up sling-dependent for many years. But I got better.

It's an ISSF 10m air pistol target, so you can look the dimensions of that up online.

That WAS rather quick, for a single shot! Think you could have done 14 Inna minute, with a little practice...the grouping was good for the speed, as well. Shutzen had a hey-day here in America as well, those fat, hooked stocks designed for off-hand target shooting., mostly among our Gernan immigrant population in the 1890's through the to WW I. sadly the First war put an end to this "German" sport here, it fell out of favor rapidly, as those men put up their ornate single shots for a Springfield in a more deadly "competition ".... 😔
