MAD PROFESSOR Sweet Honey Overdrive vs EHX Soul Food

It's a duel between overdrives! From mild drive-tones to full-gain crunch, I play a Custom 22, Les Paul Studio and a Tokai Breezysound Tele through a Suhr Badger 18 head & Orange PPC212 closed cab.
Electro-Harmonix SOUL FOOD is a clone of the famous Klon-pedals. This Mad Professor SHOD is a hand-wired (pre PCB-versions) pedal designed by Björn Juhl. It is made right here in FINLAND, yay!
Cheers for watching, folks!

Great review man! I love the video editing and style of your review and the sound of both pedals you managed to record... and using three different guitars, that's really useful for us, thanks! Both pedals sound great, good quality sound with personality, I think I prefer the soul food for myself and the kind of tone I'm digging for, but the sweet honey sounds nice too, pretty usable... Subscribing now!

Thanks! They are two different animals, that's for shure. My preference is the SHOD, I guess it's the added treble-content. And I don't really need a clean/treble boost that much.

They are both nice individually, but the big difference for me is in the delay. The Soul Food repeats as a non-tuneful fizzle whilst the Sweet Honey sends back harmonics that snuggle around the original note. I get a similar effect from my Mesa Boogie Flux Drive on lower gain and I still haven't found a better solo tone than the Budda ZenMan which blends with anything you throw at it.

I watched a guy play a few weeks ago in a kick ass blues band, and could not believe what I was hearing. After the break I went up and talked to him. His set up was a strat into a fulltone full drive 2 into a soul food. he kept the full drive on the whole time and stepped on the soul food for his killer leads, and I can tell you it was absolutely the greatest tone and sound I have ever listened to. he was running into a fender twin reverb amp. He did mess with his guitars volume a bit as he had the soul foods gain up to around 8. super super tone

both sound exceptional, both have pleasing qualities. The sweet honey is a little more lush sounding but the soul food would be a better choice in certain song arrangements. Soul Food is a bit more aggressive in the upper mids. I think the two compliment each other rather nicely and would work together in a mix or live situation, They would stack well together in my opinion. The verge of brake up tones are convincing as well. They would both work really well with the Saturn V or some other type of harmonic booster.

Ze Bubba By the way what mic you have used for the demo and at what distance from the amp?
@ZeBubba
@ZeBubba 9 лет назад
Alex T. I used Sennheiser's e906 mic in front of my PPC212 cab. It's hanging from the top of that cab in front of it, maybe 2cm from the grill. I don't think that distance makes too much of a difference. As long as it's clearly not too far away for a dynamic mic. It's on an angle to the grill, maybe 45 degrees pointing to the center of the cone. You can see a photo of my micing-setup on most of my clips, if not this one.

Beautifully recorded, beautifully played and an absolutely excellent comparison . One of the best, if not the best I've ever seen on RU-vid. Congratulations! With that said, I like the SHOD better but I think in a band context I'd choose the Soul Food. I like that subtle, boxy mid hump; I regularly use a Keeley Blues Driver so a flat-ish OD pedal is a bit of a scary proposition. The SHOD sounds prettier but I'm not sure that'd work out in a band setting. Thanks!

The SHOD is completely functional in a band setting. I am using it alongside a BB preamp which sits about as perfectly as anything in a live mix and there is no problem switching between the two.

Love the top on your PRS. I have both the Soul food and the Joyo sweet baby (sweet honey clone) I play through a PRS P22. I find that the knockoff of the Sweet honey is more transparent, and sweeter than the soul food.

Are these the same circuit? Thought the SF was a treble booster like a klon centaur? I don't know what the SHOD is but with the amount of bass in the signal I'd bet its not a treble booster. Otherwise, this was a fantastic video. Great audio and video presentation.

I see a lot of dissing of the Soul Food. I dont know cause I use a Meat and 3 modded Soul Food. It sound pretty good. But in my case it's the drive and then a bias modded older Tube Driver and then a Alchemy modded Blues driver. The Soul Food and the Blues driver are set gain low so not so noise when used alone. When stacked they get awesome then kick on the Tube Driver and hang on. I'm running the Tube Driver at 18v for more headroom and an old 12AX7 RCA tube. Kinda like a fuzz pedal especially with the Soul Food set with germanium switch on.

Looks like the negative comments on the Soul Food are an attempt to justify ridiculously overspending on the Sweet Honey. You can go on Kijiji and grab a Sweet Honey clone, the Joyo Sweet Baby Overdrive pedal, for $25.00 Canadian.

I have these two pedals. Love the shod for open sound chords. Sf sounds too much mid bump as the gain is turned up, might be useful for band situation.
@ZeBubba
@ZeBubba 10 лет назад
Yeah, that's pretty much how I hear it. Soul Food = mids, especially with gain boosted. SHOD = highs (and more lows).

Ze Bubba The SF was more dynamic in lower gain settings than the Sweet Honey..that was a shocker even though it's the PCB version.
@ZeBubba
@ZeBubba 9 лет назад
Josh YOSH It is NOT the PCB version! It's the older version, pre-PCBs. BTW, those PCB-versions are not made in Finland. Thanks for watching.

Two great pedals. They sound very close in my estimation. In some ways the Soul Food seems to be a bit harsher and "boxyier" sounding to me, but that could be a function of the settings. I use the Soul Food, but I run a compressor before it so mine sounds a bit smoother than this one. The SHOD sounds great, but the difference from Soul Food is pretty small and not worth the price difference for me personally. Nice review! Thanks!
@ZeBubba
@ZeBubba 8 лет назад
The SHOD has sparklier highs imo, it is nicely colored with all settings. SF is quite neutral with low gain settings, but yeah, it gets middy/boxy with more gain. SHOD is my prefered pedal of the two. Cheers!

To me the SHOD sounded more transparent and doesn't get as much midrange spike with the gain turned up. SHOD sounded richer to me with more harmonic overtones. That being said, Soul Food still sounds awesome, and Soul Food costs only 20% of SHOD...

I don't care for the Soul Food. It sounds thin no matter how you set it. The Mad Prof had some nice tones without losing bottom end.

Cool! It's basically two chords: 1. an F# minor chord on the 9th fret (root note's on the A string) with an added open high E-string (like this x-9-11-11-10-0)... 2. C# major chord (root note is the 9th fret of low E string). I play that second chord's lowest note with my thumb so I can add extra notes with my pinky & middle finger. Check out an E major scale to find notes that fit there. Hope this helps..

If your rig lacks bass I would go with the SHOD but otherwise the Soul Food stands its ground. Is the SHOD $60 ?
@ZeBubba
@ZeBubba 9 лет назад
SHOD is much more than 60 bucks. There are two versions, handwired (like in this video) and a cheaper standard model. I think these pedals have lot in common, but they work very differently. Especially on higher gain settings - SF pushes lots of mids when you increase gain. IMO SF works better as clean boost but SHOD has more sparkly highs.

@JRCGuitarist

It depends on how your are running it. I had to play with it for a few days to figure out how to get it to sound balanced with my gear. I think it’s as good as any “transparent” overdrive pedal. If people want more from it, I’m using a Preamp on my board and I bumped the bass, turned the treble and mids down on the preamp pedal. I only use the treble knob on the SF if I need treble. It sounds fine now. Also, it sounds really sweet with my Schecter (which has an EMG pickup in the bridge). So, pickups play a part when it comes to the SF.
