Jay made this tape in 1994 supposedly. The man was ahead of his time. I remember a guy posting on a forum a few years ago that he worked at some studio during Mad Skillz "From Where???" album recording, he met Dilla and Q-tip that day. He said unsurprisingly how Jay was a shy and quiet guy when he met him, but coincidentally Dilla played some tape during the studio session. The tracks that were being played in this video match up to the tracks that the guy said he heard that day during the studio session. Also this is the same beat tape that Pharcyde got from Q-tip. Some tracks that Mad Skillz rejected were used for Pharcyde's - Labcabincalifornia album.
Not many know about the one and only dilla man who once walked this here earth. I'm loving this stuff mann, Nothing but gold and a never ending crave for more of his funky beats. Rest Up J dilla!🙏🏼🙏🏼💯
Man it is no telling how many of these beat tapes are out there! Busta has said on several occasions that he has hundreds of Dilla beats. He ALWAYS has at least one Dilla beat on his records. And this is what caused the big beef between Swizz Beats and Drake over Drake releasing a song that Busta gave him using a Dilla beat for free so he didn't have to pay Dilla's estate. I'm pretty sure that Common does too. Q-Tip definitely.?uestlove probably has some too. I wouldn't be surprised if Pharrell and Kanye had some of his beats. Kanye even talks about Dilla giving him some of his drum kit. Dilla also secretly worked with Dr. Dre a lot when he moved to LA. And of course T3 and his little brother Illa J and Young RJ from Slum Village. I am certain that there are THOUSANDS of Dilla beats out there that a lot of MC's and producers are holding onto. Just think about all of the untouched and un listened to music from Dilla that is out there!!
Dilla, is a true soldier. Even when he was wheel chair bound he NEVER gave up, he never lost hope, he pushed on and on. Dilla NEVER allowed his medical condition silence him!!!
I was stationed in Norfolk, when the "From Where" album dropped. Being there at that time was surreal. I've always given props to VA radio stations, because they'd play remixes, B-sides, and various other treats we wouldn't hear elsewhere. The tracks done by Dilla stood out the most, and I wasn't truly aware of him and his prowess, til the "Beats, Rhymes, and Life" album. Nuff fukkin' said. R.I.P. Eternal salute to you and Skillz.
Skillz probably loved the beat, but maybe he felt that his rap style didn't match with it...The Jam beat sounds more rugged and street (which is Skillz's style), whereas Runnin' sounds smooth and jazzy/abstract (which was Pharcyde's style).
Thank you soo much for sharing this! Made my day... I am waiting for things like this to happen for years.. there must be so much more dilla music out there.. Great vid - I feel you man. you should reach out to ma dukes and get these beats digitized again ;)
I think he was so good because he made magic, not music. I think he kinda knew that and it was intentional, I think that magic is exactly what he wanted to create. Boy, he did. It's definitely sorcery, not just rhythm and grooves. He was Messi of making beats, made magic for the love and for the fun of it. I think that's what we all gotta aim for whatever we do.
I love these old beats some of my favorite music are beats, Running is one of my favorite songs, im a white 60 year old guy im just old schoo still i will never stop loving rap hiphop older the better :) LOL
Dope Dilla face sticker on my back windshield rollin' around Detroit showing respect like I'm spose to. Dilla will always be our Hometown Hero! Rest In Beats
