In this episode:
The cold war burns hot in 1962 when the USSR places nuclear warheads in Cuba. Soon, the first US troops arrive in Vietnam staying more than a decade. In the Prague Spring of 1968, a movement towards 'communism with a human face' is doomed. It was a giant leap for mankind when man walks on the moon in 1969. In 1972, Richard Nixon becomes the first US president to visit communist China.
'M.A.D. World' takes a close look at the last time we were threatened by the might of world superpowers: The Cold War. For over forty years the entire world stood on the brink of annihilation, as the horrors of World War II ended and a new kind of global war began when the push of a single button could trigger all-out nuclear war. 'M.A.D. World' examines how the world was changed forever by the Cold War. Over eight episodes, remarkable footage from the time shows how the build-up of nuclear arms and the mistrust between West and East instilled terror across the globe. First-hand accounts bring the stories to life as we talk to pilots drilled to drop the bomb, families are torn apart by the Iron Curtain, and escaped dissidents who lived in fear of torture and execution.

Damn. By a vote of 2 to 1 in FAVOR of launching a nuke. That’s crazy. That 1 captain literally saved all of mankind. Losing communication with your home country when you have nuclear weapons on board and having to make decisions on wether or not to use them on your own knowing that the entire future of humanity is at stake and having to make that decision on behalf of a world superpower is an awesome responsibility I hope I never personally have

If he was wrong, he was dead. That didn’t matter, he knew more was at stake than his life and that of his fellow crewmen, usually it’s always put your crew first, this captain knew if there was one time to throw that idea away, it would be at the threat of all out nuclear war.

They caused it by putting their missiles on the Turkish USSR border, so Russia put theirs in Cuba. Typical America & they make themselves look like saviours despite risking the whole of humanity by their belligerence, as they always do, Vietnam Iraq Central America..

Saw this in my Word History class and half of my classmates fell asleep to this while I was literally wide awake to see this. I can’t believe that the people in my generation don’t wanna learn and watch this, this is actually really interesting. The Cold War is absolutely insane! I always thought that the moon landing was just about the first people to land on a rock but the moon landing was all about the Cold War and America getting there before the Soviet Union. History is now my favorite subject. I thank my history teacher for this.👍

also, the tube with the tact-torpedo was leaking, so they couldn't fully flood, or drain, high probability it wouldn't activate

Yeah, that guy talking about the incident got it wrong. He also said the sub couldn't radio home because the "depth charge" knocked out the sub's comm gear. What?! They couldn't communicate because they were deep underwater and couldn't put the mast up for fear of the destroyers capturing them. The Soviets didn't have ELF underwater capability back then.

Note that the Kennedy Administrative intentionally called its naval action a "quarantine" instead of a "blockade", which technically was a more warlike response.

I‘m certain that 95% of the Missiles in Cuba would have surely been destroyed in the 1st Air Strike on Cuba. And after that many more Air Strikes would have followed. And the Warheads were‘nt mounted on the Missiles and stored in a separate bunker. And the SS-4 was a Missile with liquid fuel, meaning it had to be filled up before it can be launched. That would have given the Air Force enough time to carry out at least two Air Strikes on the Missile Sites. In Europe this Task was much more difficult. There were so many SS-4 Missile Sites in Belarus and Ukraine, that a First Strike with our Jupiter Missiles in Turkey and Italy would‘nt have destroyed all SS-4 Sites. Our only Chance was to exploit the soviet weakness of an extremly centralized command system. If the US would have carried out a MRBM First Strike against Moskow, they maybe would have had a Chance. It took the Jupiter Missiles 8-9 Minutes to reach Moskow.

Ironic that a nuclear war was avoided by a democratic vote by three Russians. It's also often glossed over that the USA put their missiles in Turkey, close to the USSR border in 1961. As a reaction the USSR put theirs in Cuba, then the Americans panicked. I've never read an explanation why the USA had nuclear missiles in Turkey and why they were not considered as potentially provocative by the west.

True story, Castro from Cuba was so furious a grown man with an education, Kennedy, could not pronounce Cuba correctly, so he wanted us nuked. Kennedy could not learn how to pronounced it Cuber. No r at the end. That's why Oswald was contracted to take him out. No R at the end of Cuba. It's pronounced "Coooo-baaaah " simple two syllables and a man that went to lead the United States could not figure it out. Sad.

Communism is a great idea in principle but like all political systems it is susceptible to corruption. Particularly so as the leadership is structured in a such a way that the leadership is difficult to challenge. Democracy shares the problem of susceptibility to corruption but more people have to be on board which makes it more difficult, but not impossible to achieve. I mean im pro democracy but if a populous wants communism who is anybody outside to tell them no. Its just important to be Cognizant of the danger

Beatles was a pop group. Kennedy's greatest show was being shot in the face and Jack The Ripper Paar none has ever heard of.
