@@thee20thdoctor18 It's not just references, even though the first film had a good amount of those, it's the sheer wit of the jokes themselves. Pay very close attention to the dialogue, especially when the lemurs and especially the penguins are talking. The wordplay, comedic timing, and the sheer outlandishness of the shit they say in deadpans are the easiest things to miss.

I watched this movie more than once thinking that the lemurs called a bunch of crazy lions The Foosa like it was just their word for this group of lions. I recently found out that foosa is a real animal species that exists in Madagascar and eats lemurs. It's kinda like a civet.

1. They are shown to be surprisingly dexterous their "hands" even the ones that go on all 4s, case in point, Melvin's new job in the second one. Also, Marty is seen moving around bipedal so it's implied he is simply more comfortable on all 4s. 2. Beaches have all kinds of random garbage floating up on their beaches, there is a plane crash on the island and added content shows something that appears to be a sort of dumping ground on one side of the island, it is very much within the realm of reason he could have found that lock.

In high school my mom and I just rewatched a bunch of series that I enjoyed as a kid during the pandemic. Madagascar and Pirates of the Carribean were our favorites. When I invited some of my friends over (fast forward to college) for a party, we just watched the Penguins of Madagascar over some beer and fried chicken. My go to movie is The Lego Batman Movie. 2:35 As someone 100% the Madagascar video game on the PC the answer is that Marty teams up with the Penguins and they ask around the other animals for a way to escape while James Bonding around the security guards and cameras. The penguins abandon Marty and the Janitor finds out and calls this soldier animal control guy? that has the zoo key and confirms the zoo has terrible security because of budgeting. Marty kills him and takes the key and escapes. You have no idea how many years i've waited to explain this.
