Tbf that prushka sequence was only a page in the manga since it’s prushka’s thoughts/life flashing before her eyes during that time, but because this is such a painfully faithful adaptation they decided to firmly establish that she is indeed alive as a cartridge Also looking at the flashbacks in season 1 Riko’s dad can’t be Lyza’s white whistle as she still has it when they are together

As I know Bondrewd represents Riko in case if she would go too crazy about her desire of knowledge of Abyss and how it strange but he`s like Riko is a very loving and caring person, just too much crazy as a scientist

Basically Bondrewd is the purest form of "Akogare" (Aspiration). He has seen and took the endless pit a person could take with his aspirations, so deep is his aspiration that he basically represents the Abyss now. If Riko took her aspirations too far and truly embodies the Abyss, she will become similar to Bondrewd and like all the other white whistles that gave their souls for their aspirations.

He didn't just use himself for making the white whistle. The experiments into the curse were done on himself first, but they failed because he's not considered 'alive' anymore. So he started using other delvers, then kids. In a way, it's a dark mirror to Riko, showing what could happen when looking for answers goes too far.

Here is some little info: -Umbra Hands with white clothing are suited for battle, so its a good thing that Reg didnt pick a fight with the one on the fourth layer's garden -Yeah, the Umbra hands are kinda like Zombies. One part that was left out from the manga was actual black whistles that walked around like Zombies. They failed the process of connecting to the Zoaholic and as such were left like mindless wanderer's around Idofront. I hope I explained that properly. It has been a while since I read this section of the manga.

Admittedly, it was a feelsbadman during the prushka flashback, but it also showed a ton of what she did and learned growing up in hopes of going on her own adventure someday. She learned how to sew and do medical procedures, learned how to rappel, etc. Also, no, Prushka didn't perform experiments on other children the same as Nanachi (or at least not knowingly) but definitely at least did procedures on other abyssal creatures.

So couple things. The tail is a relic, I don't remember what it's called. The spikes Bondrewd shoots Riko with are called Shakers, they more attach to the target than pierce, and just make them experience the third layers curse, so they made Riko sick and pass out. The black tar looking stuff Bondrewd uses to trap Reg and move around is actually a creature stuck in a box, and it forces it to use a defense mechanism, like a squid inking. Anything below this is copy pasted info, the original poster is long gone Here you can find interesting information about the Film's Things (it was a Commentary Interview with the Author made after Film's 1° Screening) - Umbra Hands with white coats are the bodies made for battle, and they're armed with really powerful relics. - Bondrewd's multiple eyes with the tentacles growing out is a relic. - The Umbra Hands acting like robots is just them on "Auto Bondrewd" mode. - Rico has in fact eaten wall before. - The body with four arms is in charge of the Zoaholic. - Meinya found the Zoaholic because the relic draws animals to itself. - Bondrewd and Nanachi survived the incinerator because Reg set it to not affect living things. - The Shaker needles fuse with the target's skin and don't actually wound the target. - Bondrewd didn't save the umbra hands from the scorpion things because having them die to complete Purshka was his plan all along. - Bondrewd sees through Nanachi's eyes using another relic not Zoaholic - Purshka did know that Bondrewd was doing experiments but didn't know exactly what they were - Reg, who is not human, has the most "humanity" - Reg's penis getting hard is not a sexual thing, but a biological thing. He has not reached Spermarche. - Bondrewd's whistle isn't blown into, he clasps his hands around it to keep it in shadow and then strokes it to make it vibrate and make its sound (it is not a pair of hands but two of the same hand). - Bondrewd's line congratulating Nanachi on "setting (something" free" upon seeing Mitty's light bulb go out is referring to Nanachi setting herself free, not Mitty. - Reg is naked when captured but has his pants on immediately when rescued because Nanachi put them on before picking him up. - If you take a close look at the thing Nanachi puts on the Purshka whistle, the top is supposed to look like a green hat. - Purshka Masturbates (Tsukushi yelled this apparently) - The toilets have no doors but Purshka and the hands don't care - Papa Pole is short for "pole used to become a papa", Purshka was taught this in biology/dissection lessons - There are plenty of people who want to become Umbra Hands - The Guy in the flower field was especially powerful. Like the body with the tail, all of the hands with the white coats are tough. - Reg got bugs up his pants (is that where they got some to use in the first fight against Bondrewd?) - Nanachi is warm. - Bondrewd Really Loves children - Riko goes to sleep with her glasses on and Nanachi is the one who takes them off - Purshka did know that there were other children around but didn't know what became of them - Umbra Hands in "Auto Bondrewd" result in them having "all the information coming in" but also makes them slow. Also called "Cloud Bondrewd". - The Tail is an "extension" of a relic called "The Third Arm/Third Works" that becomes part of a body when attached - Reg has infantile traits, and him constantly reacting to Nanachi being fluffy is like a child getting excited without knowing what they're excited about - Gueira's personality was intact all along (though he was in auto mode when he died) - They did not destroy the Zoaholic, respecting Purshka's last wishes that they stop fighting. - The incinerator can be fired multiple times during the ten minutes before Reg blacks out - Nanachi's punches are soft and do not hurt

Also in reference to any Reg starts crying when he drops the rock of Bondrewd, he's never killed another person before. It's also likely why Riko started to cry initially after she shot him with the incinerator. As for season 2, it gets darker but.. It's peak fiction and story telling. But that doesn't mean you have to watch it. There are other things out there that ARE good, but different. I would love for you to keep going, but if it isn't something you like, then don't force yourself

Yay, so happy to see that you liked the movie! I hope to see you continue this cute and sometimes sad journey. The important thing you should focus on that this series has as one of its main themes is hope. Our characters dont lose hope even on their way to the point of no return, so you shouldn't as well. The movie unfortunately cut out a few scenes and some really key information on Bondrewd. He’s a wanted criminal from overseas who gets his funding illegally by selling drugs and stuff. The other whistles are somewhat aware of his practices but he’s allowed to continue because his discoveries and contributions to cave raiding as a whole are so beneficial. Basically everyone sort of turns a blind eye. He also does genuinely love Prushka and all the children he takes in. But because he’s split his consciousness so much, he’s gone insane and is essentially not even human anymore, so his idea of “love” is pretty warped. In a cut scene, prushka tells Bondrewd even if his researchers leave, she’ll do anything to help him, and he takes that literally. He truly does believe his actions are not only justifiable, but that there’s nothing wrong with them to begin with. He has lost nearly all his human emotions and empathy over time. I could write an entire essay on how great of a villain and character Bondrewd is as a whole but I digress, lol. Prushka was also aware that there were other children there but she didn’t have any contact with them, and only saw them as cartridges. She’s also the only child Bondrewd ever raised as his own. Hope you’ll watch season 2!

One thing I've always been curious of. I haven't read the manga, but let's say a child did insist they no longer wanted to 'help' Bondrewd and wanted to return, how do you think Bondrewd would react? Just from my personal opinion, Bondrewd has never been shown to outright hold someone against their will outside of Reg (who Bondrewd doesn't see as another human being). So I get the feeling is that if a child ever wanted 'out' Bondrewd would try convincing them and telling them how great their 'contribution' would be. But if they still insisted on out, he would either let them leave the Idofront, or I do believe, I wouldn't be surprised if he were to escort them back personally or arrange an escort. that may not be possible as a child that young would probably die from the ascension curse, so he probably may just get them to be a hand around the Idofront.

@@GoodwillWright I really can't see him letting said child go no matter what. I think he knows all these children would want out if they knew what they were signing up for. And judging from one of the extra cover arts that depicts the children awake in horrific pain, I dont think he has any sympathy to give even when they DO want out. And by that point its always too late, anyway. Its not like he can let anyone on the outside know the details of what he does otherwise he'd probably be in even deeper shit lol. I assume that when Bondrewd recruits kids, all he tells them is that it's a one-way journey. He never forces anyone to come, but I do believe he would force them to stay. You should definitely read the manga though, its great! And pretty short, just over 60 chapters as of now.

But you are probably right overall. Thanks for weighing in. Also I do actually have the manga, I just haven't read it yet. I was planning to but then 2nd season was announced and since I was introduced to the series via the anime, I thought I'd watch the anime first and then read the manga to see how well the anime handled the adaptation and also of all the extra little details I heard that the anime omits. But once second season ends, I'll read through the whole manga and then continue following the manga. Doubt we'd get another anime for maybe a few years or since I heard that the manga only just finished the Narehate village arc?

Of course, the latest chapters have had some pretty interesting developments about the nature of the abyss, but we probably won’t be seeing them adapted into anime for years considering how slowly the author puts them out.

Bondrewd IS nurturing, he's just inhumane. Meaning, he does love the children, specially Prushka, which is why he remembers all their names and dreams... he just doesn't see anything wrong with KILLING PEOPLE HE LOVES. S2 does get worse IMO, but there's lots of buildup for it. Doesnt hit as suddenly as this. Except for a certain scene literally 30 seconds in. The kids let Bonedaddy live because it was Prushka's dying wish, because it wouldn't be easy to go around killing all this bodies, and because Riko has a bit of a "blue and orange" mentality and cares more about reaching the bottom of the abyss than doing what's right.

Bondrewd's "love" is simply a mix possessiveness and curiosity. He's a great villain, but I'm tired of people saying he actually cared for the children.

@@ethea.1042 the argument that Bondrewd didnt genuinely care for the children has two major issues facing it - The Blessing of the Abyss actually worked : Both the author and the story confirmed that "love" exists within Bondrewd. Author told it in a press con and the story confirming it with the Blessing actually working. But its important to know that the Abyss (or the Force Field, whatevers giving the Blessing) goes along with what the individuals involved genuinely believes. By that I mean that if Bondrewd believed that the things he did are genuine "love" and Prushka believed that what her father did was genuine "love", then the Abyss will reward them with the Blessing as it knows a person's genuine beliefs by peering into their soul. Also this feeling has to be mutual, so the Abyss knows that this "love" is truly directed from daughter to father and vice versa. For Bondrewd and Prushka, the things that transpired in this arc was their definition of "true love". Like Majikaja said in S2 (he was talking about the village, but the same principle applies in the overall Abyss), one can fool themselves enough to genuinely believe something to be the truth and the Abyss will go along with it. In this case, Bondrewd believes using children for scientific advancement is him giving respect and love towards them. Obviously its twisted, but its considered love by the Abyss because Bondrewd honestly thinks it is. - One's definition of "love" is not universal : Not every human has the same definition of "love" and there is no absolute concrete definition of "love". This is obvious philosophy wise. Since the Abyss goes along with what an individual genuinely believes deep in their soul, this point is important. There are people out there IRL that think strictness in a relationship is love, some think a carefree attitude in relationship is love, some think being strictly for one another is love while others think being open to others is love. You get my point, everyone has their own definition of true love. Some are disgusting and some seems reasonable by societal standard. What you believe to be love may not be the same as mine. In this case, like I mentioned in the first point, Prushka and Bondrewd genuinely believes that love is about sacrifice. Its a deranged ideology but the genuine aspect of it cannot be ignored. Basically Im saying is, Bondrewd did indeed care and love the children. He believes they are the future of science and thinks their sacrifice is worth it, its why he also immortalizes them in his memory as his way of showing gratitude to the children he killed. In other words, he groomed them into loving him as a father with surprisingly neutral intentions (I cannot find it in me to call it either "good" or "malicious") and as such he loves them back by nurturing them. Morally speaking, that's insane and deranged. But he honestly believes its love. And this is why this story cannot be viewed in either black or white filters. Everything in this story is morally grey and no White Whistle is evil, they just sold their souls for their aspirations and this is the end result.

Whaaa!!!! How did I miss this post! This was a great chapter to finish off what we know of the Abyss. Season 2 is under way and it's all new to us and the characters. This movie was incredible in its characters and feels. Prushka's fate to be used by her Papa was inevitable but it generated "Your Worth" for Riko and now she has her whistle. Amazing the way it turned out. Bondrewd's caretaking for the kids very much was to meet his end goals. Yeah and Nanachi and Prushka did create cartridges for him as well. That was tough. Glad to see you made it through. Hope to see you do Season 2.

My one word is “trying”. Because that’s what everyone’s doing. Trying to do right by eachother. Bondrewd admits he made a mistake when Nanachi said she didn’t want Reg to be hurt. He even offered to attempt putting him back together. And he DOES feel love. Nothing he did would have worked if he didn’t love EVERY. LAST. ONE. of those children. You see, MiA doesn’t have “villains”. It has examples. Examples of how even the purest of hearts can perform the most wicked of deeds.

Bondold, even if his body dies, he can shift his consciousness to a masked person unless he destroys Zoaholic. The real Bondold died after turning into a white whistle. The Bondold that exists now is just a bodyless consciousness.

@@NiaMakiReactsit would get continued either way, by killing a head researcher like bondrewd not only exposes the 100 kids to save thousands of future cave divers, but you'll make the abyss more dangerous. We are in the eyes of our MC who is in a suicide dive to the bottom of the abyss. And as noticed by lore the most dangerous parts of the abyss on why people die and never come back is not getting down but getting back up, which the MC and the gang have no intention of doing. And even if they want to, the only want that can probably help Riku from getting slaughtered from the curse is the research bondrewd made. There really isn't no winning. There isn't no point in even telling people about bondrewd crimes because they probably already know, that's why he is banned in many countries and has cave dwelling hitmen after him constantly.

- Unfortunately, even if the kids had killed all of the Umber Hands at Ido Front, Bondrewd exists in countless bodies throughout the Abyss and beyond. - Ouzen referred to Bondrewd as a scoundrel and Halbolg says outright that Bondrewd is wanted overseas for various crimes including human experimentation and selling relics on the black market. - Back in S1E2, it's mentioned that Riko's father, Torka died shortly before Riko's birth from complications related to the 4th Layer's Curse. Notably, Lyza was already a White Whistle by that time. - The utility of possessing a White Whistle is that its timbre unlocks the hidden powers of many relics not just that elevator to the 6th. Also, it doesn't really seem like the person receiving the Whistle needs to do anything. The 'sacrifice' seems to just involve someone dying from 'The Curse' while wishing wholeheartedly for the Whistle's recipient to survive and continue their journey... - Finally, I'm a manga reader, but have mostly been enjoying S2 thus far. I wouldn't really say that S1 or the movie were 'sad' per se, but perhaps bittersweet...

The Made in Abyss video game (story written by the author of the manga) confirms that ANYONE who dies genuinely wanting to become someone's White Whistle while having that connection to them will become "Your Worth" IF they die inside the Ido Front ritual grounds. In fact, even wanting to join them on their journey deeper into the abyss "no matter what" is enough.

How in the world is season 2 worse than this?! This movie was freaking brutal. One part of this show that has hit me more than I thought it would has been the cries from Mitty and Meinya. They are both innocent and incapable of truly expressing how they feel, and their little cries just cut through me. I don’t know why those sounds hit me so hard. The best anime I had watched before this one was Elfen Lied… and I think this is actually more brutal.

I know this stuff is a lot, but would you consider to watch S2? I think this story is in some way unique and it is shame to not watch the whole story... it is too powerful and strong in story telling and all the emotions... just one hell of experience

if he didnt genuinely love her back, he couldnt have gotten the blessing. it needs a genuine connection between 2 people. its just that he lost his humanity to the zoaholic and has almost or basically no real feel for morals or empathy left.

@@Deid You can't have love without empathy and humanity. Love is an inherently humane emotion. That's the whole point. Bondrewd simply took advantage of Prushka's feelings for him. That's what he does. He raises children for the sole purpose of making them love him so he can use them later. And I don't remember the manga explicitly stating that there has to be a genuine connection between two people, just that one of them has to love the other. Bondrewd exploited that. AND, even if the manga did explicitly state it, that would just mean the author doesn't know what love means.

@@ethea.1042 All human emotions can be distorted and unhealthy. That includes love. And that's not accounting for that Bondrewd isn't human the way we are. He's become a collective conscience, broken by the abyss and it's relics. The way he treats Prushka isn't forced to get what he wants. He never lies, merely distorts the truth, so his every word of affection is the truth. And it is explicitly stated the bond of love has to be mutual. Is it healthy? Absolutely not. But it is love. And he didn't mind sacrificing his own body for the "greater good" and would keep doing so if it was possible. His love isn't meant to make him reedemable, if that's you're worried about. Just more compelling.

@@ethea.1042 Yeah. It's like he just read Dr. Spock's and other books and info on what it takes to be a good nuturing parent and put it into practice. It's just a role he played to get the children to feel loved and return that affection. He doesn't feel anything for them, because he's incapable. Knowing all the kids name and dreams is just data to him.

The scariest part about Bondrewd is that nothing but progress is sacred to him. When we see he has thrown away his own humanity for his own white whistle and his use of the cartridges the horror goes much deeper than that. Bondrewd still has human emotions. The cartridges only work if both recipients love each other greatly. That's the fucked up part. He loves everyone of those children. He feels all the pain of their "sacrifice" for him as its necessary to receive the blessing. His own fucking emotions and what he should and should not feel or hold sacred have been ruined by Zohalic and the abyss. Bondrewd has abandoned his humanity in a way that is hard as a society to even wrap our own heads around. We think to abandon it is to become a devil or angel or some otherwordly being, but bondrewd is every bit human while also not being one at all. He is really a vacuous shell of who he could have once been
