@@NearlyOnRed I must say there is no good reason a computer like that should not be able to handle a workload like that. I ask these things because I work for an MSP and receive tickets all the time about computers that slow down without cause. First place I always look when a slowdown occurs is Windows Update. Head into Control Panel, click on System and Security. From this menu select "free up disk space" and select the drive your OS is installed on. I window will popup that says "Disk Cleanup" and from here we want to click on "Clean up system files" in the bottom left hand corner of this window. It will scan for system files for a while and then re-populate with a similar window. From here, you can scroll down and see all of the extra space being used up by Windows. I would select windows update and old windows files, if you upgraded from Vista. Click OK and "poof" Windows bloat is gone. Since you manage so many drives, I am going to assume you have them all set to defrag regularly. If not you can search "defragment" from the Control Panel window. I would also recommend moving any non-essential or non-editing applications to another drive and clearing your cache in Adobe. I have a thread here for reference: forums.adobe.com/thread/2152942 Now, onto the hardware and software. This system is already pretty beefy, the only real recommendation I have would be to upgrade to Windows 10, specifically ver. 1803 as it is the most stable, and add a bit more RAM All else fails, look up your motherboard specs and see if it has enough PCIe lanes to fully utilize both your CPU and GPU. Thank you for your time, and I hope this alleviates a few of your slowdown issues.

Wonderful analysis. I am so glad that I found your channel after your first Made in Abyss video. I really love how in depth you go. I've watched and read the manga for Made in Abyss many times now and you've pointed out things that I'd never noticed or thought about. It occurred to me that Nanachi was struggling with trying to put Mitty out of her misery but I never thought of her dealing with having to say goodbye so many times and loosing some of her humanity along the way. Thank you so much for all the work you put into this and I look forward to more series from you. :) Also, love the shirt.

Thanks a lot :) One of the things that makes me so into analysis is how often new details or interpretations will emerge after rewatching or having a dialogue about a work. Even during the 'clipping' stage of editing this I realized a couple connections that I missed during months of writing a script for it, haha. I just hope to do my part to promote discussion among those who really like to dive deep into all this :)

Th8ta, I just finished the video, good job I loved it! I don't want to spoil you one anything so I am not going to tell which is accurate which is way off, but theres a thing I think can explain the gondola/elevator thing Bondrewd used. While in the gondola Mitty and Nanachi heard the sound of the creatures outside, and Bondrewd and his followers are nowhere to be seen inside the gondola and it doesn't seem to need a driver. I think the gondola is escorted by Bondrewd's gang of black whistles and himself as they follow the gondola outside as it descents. Which is why it its impractical to use as black whistles and white whistles who can survive in 5th layer probably can survive the journey to there, hence negating the need of escorts

I hope you know just how much joy your videos bring me in general. Finishing this video brought tears to my eyes as I have now seen every video you have produced and am just in greater awe of how invested and in love with the content you create you are. Theta, the love for your craft oozes out of every detailed analysis of scenes, every side tangent about mythology (that one had me wiggling in excitement as mythology is my original jam that got my brain swirling), and every subtle joke that you still manage to say with complete calm yet comforting professionalism. Your work here is true art to me and something that should be honored. I don’t comment on things because I am lazy and don’t care enough about the works I absorb to have a discussion about them. This however changes that mentality. Your love for this work makes me want to did into every detail of every scene of the works that I love and speculate and analyze the crap of of them. You have got my brain itching for deeper meaning to the media I consume and for that, I cannot thank you enough. For now, this comment will somehow have to be enough thanks but know if anyone ever decides to get another box together for you, you will be getting something from me. I will follow your content as long as you produce it and I can’t thank you enough for sharing your love with us. Sincerely, A Hugely Inspired Lover of Deep Content (Ps, I could listen to you narrate a dictionary, you the most peaceful yet engaging voice I know of. If your alter egos current job ever fails definitely look into recording audiobooks. I’d buy whatever you read lol😂)

Well, this makes me blush, haha. Thank you :) The notion that my work might nudge someone toward wanting to dig more into the stories they consume or get more out of those same stories is the biggest thing that keeps me going; it's the highest compliment I can receive. So again, thank you :) Someone long ago switched me on to looking deeper into storytelling, and it changed a lot for me. This channel is my meager attempt to pay it forward...though I confess I love it and probably get the most out of the process, haha. I'm sorry for my long radio silence. It will soon be over!

It is hinted at several points the guild does hide information from the general public to maintain their advantage. The children are told there is no way to avoid the curse but Habo has a vaccine for the second layer, and then Riko remarks later that the guild distributes incomplete and incorrect maps to throw off clandestine delvers.

I guess there's more than just 2 of those guys, then, heh. How in the world do they get it back to the surface? Or is it a one-way journey for the container as surely as for the children? I don't guess I actually want an answer. It does explain why it's not used for some of the things I wondered (like helping other exploration), but it still seems to suggest the guild would be aware on some level.

@@NearlyOnRed It's easier to smuggle "a sealed container" compared to "a couple dozen children". You can claim the container is for capturing some large creature, and there's enough plausible deniability for the guild to pretend they don't know anything about it.

Hey Th8A, I've watched your entire analysis series on Made In Abyss, along with an episode my episode rewatch as a sort of "homework" while working on my own fiction; by watching an episode, and then with a fresh mind watching an analysis. This is exactly what someone like me needed. Not only is the whole format a great method of organisation and flow, it's a fantastic glimse at what goes on in the audience's mind, another thing great for someone like me. Made In Abyss for some reason deeply effected me. Everything about it seemed to have brought to life to something inside of me all along, hidden away in some far off memory or primal sensation(a resonation with my soul if I was to be overly dramatic) However I didn't always understand why, or all the forces at play. Although I won't lie and say you have revealed all these mysteries for me, you have helped me on the right track, and have at least given me the torch to light my way. I hope I can one day create something of at least half the value this story has for me. And I can truly say, you have given me a great and forceful push in the right direction. Tldr Thanks Th8A, your a cool guy.
@NearlyOnRed
@NearlyOnRed 5 лет назад
I'm putting that last line on my resume fyi! Thanks for sharing all this :) It may be obvious to you if you write your own stories, but I have a writer-centric perspective when it comes to analyzing anime (as opposed to focusing on the direction or cinematography or acting etc). It's how I was trained in early adulthood, but I was an enthusiastic audience member for storytelling before I could even walk, haha. You are correct that my 'blind look' at these series one episode at a time emphasizes how the story is experienced by an audience. It's why I think the Speculation sections have value even if I'm way off. It's positively delightful to hear that it has value for you in this way :) The structure I chose for analysis (something I call Five Masters Theory, but that's a future video) was something I conceived of as a tool for writing and editing. I have tried my hand at writing stories and editing the stories of others for many many years now, and my alter-ego is a member of a regular writers' group. It will probably always be the main lens through which I view a work. As to Made in Abyss affecting you in a deep way: I don't think that's overly dramatic at all. Not if it rings true. Honestly I think the main reason we create art in the first place is that we are trying to communicate something about the world or our lives, yet we find language by itself to be insufficient to the task. There are things we feel that are otherwise impossible to articulate, like trying to describe a color to the blind or a song to the deaf. No matter where you go in the world or in history, you will find people telling each other stories. There's something essential in the process, even if we can't quite nail it down with words. I wish you great fortune in trying to craft your own story. The fact that you gave your purpose as wanting to create something of value (rather than be famous/rich/push a cause/etc) marks you with the soul of an artist. At least to me. So I really hope you succeed. :)

@@NearlyOnRed Wow, thank you! To say I have been invigorated is an understatement of considerable magnitude. It's empowering to read such things from someone I have come to respect. Thanks twice and thrice! Stories are amazing in that way. I see Fiction as Science before Science. It's a means to search for truth and meaning, just like Religion, and Martial Arts also; they just tackle it with a different method, from a different angle. Ancient peoples conjuring up legends was just the means to explore the human condition and psyche before we had the means to understand it by other means. Perhaps even the symbolism was hidden to the original authors at conception, which I have seen in my own work, where a character's design echoes their theme without me realising, until months later when looking through the themes that had sprung up while writing, I spot them and gasp. Anyway I'm on a ramble. This was supposed to be just a simple: "Thanks!", but has transformed into a "Thanks, but wait there's more!" which I won't lie, is usually how my comments go. I also wish you great fortune for your own writing and this channel!

I concluded the walkthrough, I unfortunately have to split it up and continue it another time. I first saw your video about Darling in the FranXX in a moment where I was unable to resolve my feelings about the show, I was very depressed about how it ended, it left a big scar on me, and it lasted for quite some time. Your video helped me elaborate how I felt, and in the end it helped me a lot at getting over it. Now when I finished Made in Abyss some weeks ago I was left with a sense of fear, deep pain, discomfort (I don't stand any hint of gore well at all, I had to pause for some minutes in the last episodes), hope, affection, worry.... eagerly waiting for season 2 and being scared about it like never happened to me. Your video is again having a cathartic effect on me, slowly and meticolously examinating every little piece, and giving shape to inconscious hints I was given through the episodes, not counting amplifying enourmously my awe for such a deep piece of art, and also at the same time surprising me for how deep you are going with your analisys, not leaving an untold thing. I admit it, seeing 3:56 on its length is as frightening to me as it was when I saw 2:24 on the DitF analysis, but then I remembered how much I needed your video, and how much it paid me off watching it, I scheduled its view right on. Thanks for putting your time and effort in such a big work, I admittedly didn't follow you after the DitF video, I will not make the same mistake again. Holy crap my dude! Never seen your content before, but clicked on the video because I really like made in abyss. Made it to around 1:13:00 only to realize there was almost another 3 hours left! The only reason I stopped at that point was because I had something I wanted to comment on. Mentioning the birth / rebirth metaphors is very appropriate. There are a lot of popular fan theories concerning the actual map that is used frequently to depict the abyss. It is drawn suspiciously similar to a deconstructed / completely vertical version of the female reproductive system. The top two layers can be seen as the ovaries. At the very top is a town, a source for the "eggs" that make their journey down. Further down is the third layer or "the great fault" a seemingly long and narrow passage that connects the surface to the more deep layers which is probably analogous to the fallopian tubes. The large chasm comprising the fourth through six layers is most likely the uterus or womb.The seventh layer or "final maelstrom" does straight up look like a birth canal (with 100% extra cthulhu based on how the map is drawn). The map is also suspiciously pink near the very bottom. Now there are a lot of implications with this type of symbolism. While "birth" is a process of the reproductive system, there is also a continuous process of excising excess tissue and "unfertilized" materials. It is quite possible that the majority that enter the abyss are simply mangled and spit out as a routine. But we are to imply that in extraordinary events a successful fertilization can occur? What does that entail? I believe Bondrewd at this point casually remarks on "the blessing of the abyss" which apparently allows Nanachi to gain her new form. Transformation (explicitly physical at this point) is a driving motif for those that visit the abyss. Also you may not be aware of it currently but Bonedrewd is kinda a fan favorite and a big meme. You hit the nail on head with his characterization being more than just amoral knowledge seeker guy. The cadence of his voice really adds a lot in my opinion. I think maybe you may have missed something obvious with why people on the surface would regard white whistles so greatly. It is not just the rank / importance / returns that garner heroic status, but how they got there. They had to ascend the ranks of whistles and delve deeper layers adding to their list of exploits with every expedition they survived. The fact they have whistles directly ties their origins to the town, and not a foreign entity. I think people genuinely like them as figures as they see them as local heroes going on an impossible quest. Of course little do the towns people know how these white whistles must have gradually but inevitably changed due to a lifetime of encounters with the abyss. This type of speculation is why I love this series, which is why I am astonished at how few people have actually talked about this show on youtube beyond a superficial reading / pitch. Keep up the good work! I've got a good back log now for the next couple of weeks for commutes.

"Sparagmos - The light that returns to the cardinal point" This 'cardinal point' might be the soul of the abyss itself. When Riko was stillborn, the curse-warding box revived her. But it was not able to protect her eyes. The part of her face that it could not be protected was the same that Riko existed within during her near-death experience. Her soul / consciousness moved to the parts of her that were already dead. There, she saw Mitty's eye, the one that had been removed by Sparagmos. Only when Mitty was 'incinerated' did she become whole (and thus restored to her natural form). Nanachi states that Reg's incinerator operates similarly to Sparagmos, which she says Bondrewd possessed. This makes me think that Reg's incinerator (and sparagmos) are relics that are connected to the Abyss' curse itself. Maybe even the curse of the 7th layer, which might just send you straight to the cardinal point. I doubt this is the last we'll see of it. Of note, "Sparagmos" is a greek word for a ritual sacrifice where the sacrifice was pulled apart while still alive. This video was really amazing, I'll be following more of your stuff in the future. I think that the "return" part of the hero's journey will not come true in the standard fashion, as that would contradict the world's transience that you talked about. The world is transient, but heavily interconnected. The balloon scene displays this pretty nicely. This may be a journey from which they cannot return as humans, but they will 'reunite' in some way with those they've met, and their journey will mean something.

Thank you for this analysis and the ones that came before. Reliving this series with you was a pleasure that gave me the opportunity to learn new things and overall the joy to re-experience something that is dearly beloved. Watching someone experience for the first time something is one of the closest things to actually reliving those sensations yourself(this is the primary motive reaction videos are so widely popular) and only the Abyss knows how much I love this series. It is a rarity to encounter something that hits so close to home, to who you are, evoking such unbridled love that spurs the thought "this is a series that I wish I would have written". But apart me gushing like a fangirl I especially commend you for the great job with the Themes section and your thoughts on The Final Unknown(this last topic, in particular, would be deserving of pages and pages of discussion tying it to a lot of different artistic endeavors of the past decade -someone said Dark Souls?- ) and I want to give you a parting gift in regards to this particular topic and in celebration of this finale. I know you are not particularly interested in reading manga, however, I'd solicit you to read From Star Strings. Being Tsukushi's first published work he has embedded it with a lot of the things that then coalesced into Made in Abyss, especially themes like Longing and the Unknown. It is a short story clocking at only 67 pages in total and it's freely available to the public. I'll leave a link to a translation here in case you are interested: imgur.com/a/f9tpg P.S. The Nanachi Signature shirt is extremely cute and I'm glad you wore it

Thanks for all your kind words, really :) “Watching someone experience for the first time something is one of the closest things to actually reliving those sensations yourself” Totally. I feel like this is one of the appeals of parenthood even. I know that whenever I experience something I enjoy, whether a great book or a beautiful sunset, my first instinct is to turn to someone else and say 'hey, check this out!' Something in us delights in sharing experiences. The more the experience means to us, the more the delight in sharing it, the more the desire TO share it. I guess this is just part and parcel of being social beings. “spurs the thought "this is a series that I wish I would have written". “ I hear you. This series is just rich with detail and thoughtfulness and interesting complexity. It both inspires me to want to craft my own stories (something I have a half-dozen unfinished versions of already, haha) and intimidates me into realizing that this is beyond what I'm probably capable of. An oddly satisfying tension. “your thoughts on The Final Unknown(this last topic, in particular, would be deserving of pages and pages of discussion tying it to a lot of different artistic endeavors of the past decade“ Absolutely, and it's such a widespread 'background theme' that it's a little easy to miss. It's something I've tried to write about myself. This series' increasing emphasis on it (and the Longing companion theme) resonated with me in a substantial way. Which is exactly the kind of thing that makes me nuts about storytelling in the first place, haha. “I want to give you a parting gift” You're right that I don't normally read manga. It's not a prohibition, just a current matter of taste (and time). And so, I gladly accept your suggestion, and I will make time to check it out :) I really appreciate it. “The Nanachi Signature shirt is extremely cute and I'm glad you wore it" I was pretty delighted to find it! After someone sent me some Darling in the Franxx shirts and I wore them for the finale, I thought it would be nice to try to pull that off for other finales in the future, assuming I can find suitable choices.

You're a legend for being able to discuss these last episodes in such a calm manner since I'm sure there were plenty of moments you had to step away from it all to take a bit of a breather. Thanks a lot :) I, too, am glad to have finally completed it, haha. "Just how many times have you cried rewatching this episode to make analysis points and gather material for the video?" Eesh. So, for me, it's a lot harder on reflection than on the first time through. Once I am trying to put myself in, say, Nanachi's shoes and trying to understand what she's thinking at various points I'm a lot more likely to also experience whatever emotions she is feeling. I'm also just as likely to be emotional over moments that are touching rather than just sad ones, so I usually get it from both ends, haha. Let's just say that I benefit a lot from the editing stage of this process :)

Congratulations on finishing this series! I hope you will be able to cover the movie with the next manga arc. A different interpretation for the petal in the city scene: They throw these for funerals, we know about the birthday disease killing people and the whole city is full of the petals, my first reaction was "this must be the made in abyss variant of the black death". Especially because I don't think that flower petals fall of like leafs. Another interpretation could also be that there war some kind of big festival in the city where all these petals were used, as they seem central to the rituals at the abyss. One tiny bit they cut from the manga bath scene: Riko gets embarassed after seeing Regs reaction and covers herself up for a bit, the first time she was ever shy about her nakedness in front of him. Which I think is a good hint that her understanding of Reg is changing. I am just not sure why they decided to cut it.

Thanks! I also hope to cover any future iterations of the series. "Especially because I don't think that flower petals fall of like leafs." They don't, which is actually why I started thinking they might be cherry-blossom stand-ins in the first place. It would be interesting to find out that there has been an uptick in the birthday sickness situation as well, though, since that's obviously going to amount to something. "the first time she was ever shy about her nakedness in front of him. Which I think is a good hint that her understanding of Reg is changing. I am just not sure why they decided to cut it." That's actually more of what I would have expected, since I said sometime ago that I figured she would eventually start to consider him more and more human instead of just a robot / pet dog. I can only guess they cut it to keep the focus on Nanachi in that scene, and perhaps there is going to be another opportunity to show this shift in Riko in the near future.

4 HOURS, nice. I really enjoyed watching this whole series, and getting another's in depth viewpoint. It was highly interesting to watch you speculate both the times you we're right and wrong. Personally I can't wait for your video on the next arc when the movie comes out (Years from now T.T). This type of long form and in depth analysis and speculation is sadly undervalued, I'm very happy my love for Made in Abyss brought me to your channel though. I haven't actually seen any of the other shows you've covered yet, and if/when I do I'll be here to watch more. P.S. Thanks for showing me that there are Nananchi signature shirts, I've already gone and ordered one.

Incredible! Outstanding! Tour de Force! (And yeah, Made in Abyss the anime was pretty damned good too!) Th8a, congratulations on completing this fantastic series and episode of analysis. I often rewatch your videos multiple times, especially the set from Bunny Girl Senpai. Rewatching this one will be a bit more of an investment, but it will definitely happen. I have often worried that you could be falling into the trap of letting the perfect be the enemy of the good, especially with endings. And hearing how this episode can be seen as wrapping up an "arc" of your output made me even more convinced that might have happened. I hope you are able to feel satisfied enough at what you produced here that you can relax a bit and take pleasure in all our praise. Again, job well done! Conversely, I hope this achievement doesn't turn into an albatross around your neck, and that you do not compare all your future output against it and find all those things wanting. The wrap-up piece on Land of the Lustrous does NOT need to be 8 hours long! (I won't be rude and ask about all the failed scripts that were abandoned along the way. But I can't help but be curious about what ideas and talking points didn't make the cut, which ones won out early on, and which ones emerged only late in the game.)
@NearlyOnRed
@NearlyOnRed 5 лет назад
"The wrap-up piece on Land of the Lustrous does NOT need to be 8 hours long!" Well now I just feel like I've been challenged! Okay not really. This was just a collision of a double-length finale on a series I felt I hadn't adequately served. It's like a warning to myself -- do a better job throughout, or else this kind of punishment waits for you at the end, hehe. As to what didn't make it / got cut out. Well specific to the last phase of this video, I cut out two themes that I had already articulated (Treasures and Power of Friendship) because they did not fit the flow of the other Themes I had pieced together. That section took longer than the whole rest of the video, because it started life as a bunch of stand-alone concepts. That swelled the length way beyond anything acceptable. I had a problem with trying to make the already-long video not quite so onerous, but the original solution was to try to make the whole thing kind of modular. It was a bad idea, and that section and its 'flow' was the fix. In a more general way, it wasn't as obvious to me that Nanachi was meant to be as central a character on the way into this finale, and even after watching it and beginning work it hadn't quite clicked. I was categorizing her alongside people like Nat or Ozen, one of a series of adventuring vignettes as our main duo worked their way downward. It took recognizing all the overlap with Reg and Riko's story for me to believe that I needed to sit down and look at the entire series with the idea that Nanachi was part of the main cast on her own parallel adventure. Comparing the themes dominant in her tale to the rest of the series illuminated some perspectives I had simply missed due to not working on the series every day like I had with some of these others. This was almost very lackluster, in other words. I still could pick and poke at it for another 6 months, but I'm probably at the point of diminishing returns now. That is basically what I've picked as my cue to consider a script complete and move on to the next step of the process.

24:41 - In regards to the gondola down, there aren't tracks all the way down. The tracks are laid down in front and dissembled from the back and the gondola must be pulled for the entire duration downwards. It requires a lot of strength and a lot of effort for the entire trip downwards, which cannot be accomplished by anyone other than Bondrewd. This would be hinted on later on.

And a 39,000 word script. Wow! Welcome back, Th8a. Glad they have (for the time) released the video and hope they will drop the claim in its totality. I agree with your copyright video that your analysis videos are transformative and I also believe this IS, in the end, truly your own work. Thank you again for making this and for putting in this amount of work that brought this to being. Your deep, thorough, and structured method of analysis really brought to mind things I never thought of myself while watching the original work, but makes absolute sense. Especially the earlier episodes where you do not know what the future brings, compared to some of us viewers who have. It's great that you speculate based on evidence of what you already have. Even if you are wrong, those are all totally plausible means that might have gone that way had the author decided differently. This series was so carefully built that this last episode had such an incredible impact that in my opinion is totally rightfully deserving of Anime of the Year. Obviously my two favorite episodes are 10 and 13. Episode 10 was great for its incredibly timed subversion of the trope as you explained in your previous video. The shock value, the sheer emotion, and the reality that these characters are in such danger was incredibly well executed. This episode on the other hand, brought to light the sheer tragedy that others have experienced. It's amazing when a series makes you care for, love, and cry for what we initially thought of as just an ugly blob. The backstory flashback just brought to life what Nanachi had to go through.

24:44 my interpretation for the lack of deep dive elevators is either that one specific spot happens to be the only "safe zone" that makes the construction feasible since the deeper you go the less diversed the type of creatures you encounter or simply the fact that elevators being able to safely lift someone up a level being too slow for high traffic floor of 1~2

1:15:07 My take away from that part with Riko dreaming about being crushed and stuck is due to the trauma she suffered from her ascent. She was on deaths door and was still undergoing the effects of the curse, and what she probably experienced was a lighter version of what Mitty experienced

Well what can I say, you did an amazing job. Excellent analysis. I would like to discuss your speculations and predictions. But it will be obvious spoilers then. I would like to avoid that. I would like to point out one thing. When Nanachi was looking for ways to kill Mitty. She herself became almost like Bondrewd. Ends regardless of means. Emotionally distanced herself. She even calmly told Reg such things as "Oh yes, you need to find the ingredients in 12 hours, otherwise Riko will die." Bondrewd did the same when he conducted the experiment on Nanachi "Try not to die" and "your sacrifice will be appreciated". I am very glad that Reg was able to pull Nanachi out of this state. And despite all the horrible things that Bondrewd did it's hard not to admire this guy. He is a great villain. He does evil things not just for the sake of doing evil. No. He does evil things because they are necessary to achieve his goals. He directly embodies the idea of "Ends regardless of means". Unethical researcher. Very accurately describes this character. I can't wait for the movie. It will be something amazing.
@NearlyOnRed
@NearlyOnRed 5 лет назад
Yeah I am impressed with Bondrewd as a character -- way too many stories have great main cast but lackluster antagonists. Made in Abyss in general does a great job of giving a variety of players who are complex in their own way (Ozen being a particularly standout example). Bondrewd is a barrier for the moment and was certainly a terrible actor in the story of Nanachi and Mitty. But he's not really the main antagonist, either; in fact, the series does not have a main antagonist. It's much closer to a Man vs Nature most of the time, but without the usual isolation that those kinds of stories gravitate towards. Just a fascinating mix of elements, as well as giving us understandable character progression (like with Nanachi as you point out).
@Vtubears
@Vtubears 5 лет назад
One thing of note is in the manga Hablog is the one describing what Bondrewd's "lord of dawn/light" title means. How he brings a new dawn of knowledge and pushes back against the darkness of the unknown, through any means possible. He describes him as a monster but does it with a full smile and speaks in awe or with pride. It really puts into context the idea that most adults on the surface probably have a very good idea of what is going on and this world just has different morals. Also shows theres no such thing as "good adults".

Ive heard a lot about the anime and the plot, the characters and stories but have no ides about anything that happens in the anime besides what happens in episode 13 and Rico almost dying. I know i shouldnt have spoiled so much of the anime for myself but I couldnt help but want to dig deeper into the lore of the world of the abyss. So after watching 12 minutes of the video, I decided to read the manga a bit, maybe all of it then watch the anime. Im reading the manga right now while watching this video and the constant ominous feeling is always surrounding me as they descend deeper into the abyss and knowing that at any point, everything can go wrong is making my heart race. The happy go lucky personality of the main character only makes things worse as she exclaims she's scared as she slowly dies is heart wrenching. The fact that Rico and Reg can't survive without each other, and the heart race and anxiety it causes whenever they're separated always fills me with anxiety. If they ever get to the bottom what will be there when they reach it? Disappointment, despair, anxiety of a absent a figure that promised to be there, and the absence of onces memmories or the overjoyed feeling and relief of the adventure finally being over as Rico meets the person who promised to be there, and Regs memories return. If they reach the bottom of the abyss and there's nothing there how will they face the fact that they can never return? How will they settle into their new lives down at the bottom if they even make it there? Made in abyss, the story that draws you in, makes you care for the characters while reminding you that at any moment they can and probably will die. A heart wrenching story that once your drawn in, cannot return without suffering the consequences, much as the characters if they try to return to the life they once had above the abyss.

A more than 4-hour-long video that I am willing to watch in one go? That's a second. If I remember correctly, one of the first things I noticed on your channel was this 4 hour video that caught my eye, and after watching some of your Bunny Girl Senpai analysis videos assured me that this show was definitely worth watching, though it did take me several months to finally watch it XD And that was... amazing. I do wonder if the reality that this series analysis took the span of two years to complete is a blessing or a curse. Though one thing to be true is that thankfully, for those who followed this channel from the beginning, didn't have to bear through the copyright shenanigans that happened soon after. I'm personally really looking forward to the movie that's screening at about the start of the next year, though considering my countries apparently bad history with anime movie screenings, I'll probably have to wait for the Blu-ray release to watch it in any shape or form. In short, amazing work. Anticipating for your pick on this season's analysis, if any.

I always end up liking how you end up tying in our own behavior interacting with the medium to the themes of the narrative told through it. It's probably the most effective way to communicate an idea to an audience when the audience itself is experiencing the exact same thing the characters do in the text. It's been a year since i finished watching MiA (for the first time at least) yet Nanachi's ark is something that crept back up into my thoughts whether it's during a work out or during commuting or even enjoying any other text. I was fascinated how the death of one, or more precisely their execution, could be such a profound expression of love. The idea of euthanasia, in Germany at least, bears a very bleak connotation as that concept was used to justify in an act of state propaganda to murder a great portion of the population they didn't deem worthy to be alive. As such i have always been weary of certain patterns involving any such notion. Nanachi's tale manages to show that such a thing can be for good. When the realization kicked in that if she were to die it would mean the one she holds dearest would be exposed to eternal suffering I realized how real her affection and ambitions really were. The desire to end one life is the reason to keep on living thy own, yet there is no malevolence or hate or "evil" in it's nature, which should be antithetical but it isn't... It's one of the most beautiful statements of love/affection yet it's paired with such a morally gray or even dark action. It was a cocktail of emotion and i could completely get into the shoes on reg in that whole ordeal. Just like you have woven the desire of the unknown the characters feel towards the abyss with us the audience and the unknown continuation or conclusion so did Reg's journey through Nanachi's ordeal with me. I would've gone even further in to it but you already explained it in detail above :) I think it's a very fascinating bit of text after all and you did it justice. Cheers Mr.Beardman!
@NearlyOnRed
@NearlyOnRed 5 лет назад
"When the realization kicked in that if she were to die it would mean the one she holds dearest would be exposed to eternal suffering I realized how real her affection and ambitions really were" I'm right there with you, I was apprehensive about how they were going to handle the whole euthanasia subject, and we definitely didn't have a very good sense of Nanachi when it first comes up at the end of episode 12. Yet when the choice is between eternal suffering and...well, almost anything else...then you realize that not only is there little choice, but Nanachi has already thought all of this through. I'm sure she WANTS to believe that she and Mitty are happy together, or there was some other way, but she faces reality because the other option is to doom her friend to torment. As you say, it's an act of love, and Nanachi nearly spent the last of her humanity in the pursuit. Even though she wants to die herself, she takes Reg's deal and promises to live on if it will buy Mitty her release. She's willing to prolong her own torment if it frees Mitty in the meantime. Euthanasia and mercy-killing is a difficult subject and has different connotations in different cultures (like you point out), and they went to great lengths to make sure it was treated with the proper gravity. IMO anyway. “you end up tying in our own behavior interacting with the medium to the themes of the narrative told through it.” Heh, I'm glad this doesn't annoy people too much, and I hope it doesn't come off heavy-handed. I think one of the great things about storytelling - and maybe the reason it is so deeply encoded in the human experience - is that it allows us to explore situations that we may not face regularly or ever. It's so difficult to see things from a perspective besides our own, and getting into a story and its characters lets us practice empathy. Stories that explore a subject in an unfamiliar setting also allow us to approach that subject in a different way than we would in, say, a political debate or a classroom. We tend to have our guard up in those scenarios, and our preexisting notions on something like, say, euthanasia, will likely override any new perspectives. In a story, though, we are outside our normal experience and don't have the usual barriers around our existing opinions. Speculative fiction in particular is a brilliant vehicle for this. Anyway, I'm waxing philosophical here. It's just part of why I want to do this kind of thing in the first place, hehe.

In part 7, you talk about the blossoms and how it symbolizes change. I guess I have a differing opinion on that. When I first saw of the end credits, I thought the pedals were foreshadowing death. They are commonly used on graves of cave raiders and they were used in the funerals rights at the surface. Going off of the tone of the music and how barren the city was when the kids were carrying up the package gave it a very solemn feel to the end credit scene. If I remember correctly, there always seem to be people in the background and especially for the time of day it was depicted at as well. This was to show that the surface was struggling. Sure they may have had the birthday illness, but I don't recall it every being cured except for moving the children outside the city limits. This illness could be affecting adults too. Or the pedals were to symbolize the possible misfortunes and deaths in the abyss to come. I just feel like those pedals were never shown shown in a positive scene or any other way to be connected to cherry blossoms except that they frequent anime . Again thanks for your analysis!
