The “Mount Railway”, railway in Madeira.
Between 1893 and 1943 the Island of Madeira once had a steam railway that ran directly uphill from Funchal to the parish of Monte and then onward to Terreiro da Luta at 864m above sea level. The basket sledges in Monte are known all over the world but not so the railway. How many visitors even notice the railway station at Monte while rushing to be first in a basket sledge?
This video is a re-creation of this journey From Funchal to Terreiro da Luta via Monte, followed by the return trip to Funchal by basket sledge.
This updated version of the video has a mirror image section corrected and clips re-sequenced to better illustrate the journey.
