OST track name: "Not yet"
--------
"Homura overcame her obstacles not through Kantian means like a noble self-sacrifice [as Madoka], nor by a base selfish means like [Kyubey's] utilitarianism. Instead, Homura obtained her fulfillment [like the Übermensch] by overcoming her struggle [...] At the ending when Homura was dancing and then jumped from the cliff, one can interpret it as Homura reaffirming life."

Kinda sad, really. Homura created an ideal world where everyone gets their happy ending except for Kyubey... and herself.
@judaihyuga
@judaihyuga 7 лет назад
Homura considers Madoka's happiness her own happiness, so in a sense, Homura got what she wanted; a world where Madoka could live a happy and peaceful life. Kyubey on the other, well, Homura holds a grudge....boy howdy does Homura hold a grudge....

How is Sayaka happy there? She's aware that Homura is a demon. She tries to hide her tears from her friends after her final encounter with Homura, having just had part of her memories changed and Homura saying to her, "If you're confrontational all the time, even Madoka may dislike you."
@ryouskye
@ryouskye 6 лет назад
It is mentioned that Sayaka will probably forget everything soon. Her memories will fade (or something like that was said by Homura). She won't remember it and then she can be together with her friends. (at least that is what I think).
@SatanIsSextingMe

But right after Homura does and says so, in Sayaka's own words, "One thing I will never forget, is that you, Homura, are a demon!" I can't help but trust she will never forget that.

@@darthutah6649 no the point is that homura preserved the law of cycles, which means there are technically still magical girls and the cycle of hope falling to despair still exists. Kyubei said that the energy that can overcome entropy is the fall from hope to despair. Its that change that the incubators use but the evil thing that they do is that they dont do anything to clean up the despair afterwards. What homura did was preserve that hope and despair cycle but made the incubators clean up the despair afterwards. a fitting end for the little cat shits.

I can't imagine the pure satisfaction Homura must feel in this moment. She went through timeline after timeline, with that little asshole each time leading to the death of Madoka and couldn't even be killed and now she's given him a fate worse than death. I love the idea that Homura didn't physically hurt the Incubators at all. But that she gave them the ability to understand and feel emotion. Like imagine being in their position if you can. A being who uncaringly damned countless innocent people to a horrible demise only to have the guilt of every heinous act you committed suddenly hitting you all at once. Homura knew she couldn't really hurt them physically. This way, they'll be tortured from inside to the point that finding out who Madoka even is will be the last thing on their agenda.
@usahknights
@usahknights 3 года назад
Pretty sure she also reduced the Incubators' numbers DRASTICALLY or to just him which very likely is a large factor in all of this (when Madoka rescues Homura in her witch form and they shoot an arrow in the sky to break the incubators' seal which also visibly wipes out a massive area of incubators)

Remember that heartwarming, cheek-rubbing scene with both Madoka and Homura sitting on chairs from the opening of the first movie? Homura's "symbolistic flashback" when she turns into a witch, where Madoka falls off the chair and disappears (her wish making her cease existing) 0:23 now she is sitting on that chair alone, missing its pair, Madoka. As if she was trying to lean towards her, but she isn't there. This is sad as shit.

Kind of the point I imagine. Homura as she is at the end of the movie is basically a god. She forces those feelings onto the incubators as punishment for trapping everyone in an endless loop of suffering and despair. She's more or less rendered them powerless and is forcing them to feel the pain of all the lives they've ruined. Dark, but not entirely unjustified.

Whether or not the Incubators truly deserved it near the end, but I will say though that the Incubators pretty much brought this upon themselves when they first conducted that whole experiment, to say the least. If they knew better that messing with human emotions as an energy source is not something they should toy with in the first place, well, that's pretty much their own fault for opening up a can of worms. Even if they happen to be a bunch of alien furballs that can not understand human emotions. And for those people that feel bad for Kyubey, if you remember back when Homura did many of the time loops. In one of the timeline, Kyubey flat out tells Homura that once they had all the energy quota they needed while Madoka's witch form was causing havoc on planet Earth, they think that it ain't their problem but Earth's problem, and who knows how many other worlds they did that as well. And then right here in the 3rd movie, they out right wanted to control the Law of Cycles just so they could turn magical girls into witches to collect more energy once again. Yeah the Incubators pretty much had it coming for a very long time so I don't really feel bad for them. In the end, Devil Homura pretty much gave these furballs a good taste of their own medicine.
@MsAbixxx
@MsAbixxx 10 лет назад
Could not have said it better myself, whenever I hear people say they feel sorry for Kyubey I'm always like "Why?! The Incubators don't really give a crap about us so why should we feel sorry for them when they brought it upon themselves!"
@MsAbixxx
@MsAbixxx 10 лет назад
NobleGrunty I don't know really, the whole reasoning is basically for "The greater good" that the deaths of a couple of very young human girls is a worthy exchange for recharging the universe. Then when in the anime series Madoka transforms into a witch powerful enough to destroy the whole world, Kyubey basically says "Well, even though I started this whole mess, this is Earth's problem now see ya!" That was enough to make me despise Kybey and his whole race, I would personally rather let the universe end naturally, everything ends eventually, rather than letting it survive by means of letting girls suffer for all eternity. I don't think I could live with myself if I knew that was happening.

Kyuubey deserves no sympathy. They already had a well working system thanks to Madoka, but that wasn't enough for those greedy little bastards. I have to give Homura right about this. The Incubators are too damn dangerous to not to be under control.
@GentlemanAeon777
@GentlemanAeon777 10 лет назад
MsAbixxx Even worse. SPOILER ALERT FOR PMMM PORTABLE In Mami's Bad End, when Madoka and Moemura are trying to wake up Mami when the Witch Candeloro appears, Kyuubey states that that's her witch and that "She probably can't hear your voices anymore". I think this means that Kyuubey also knew that when a Magical Girl becomes a Witch, they essentially go through their Self-Inflicted Hell (much like Homura did with Madoka turning to Pink Milkshake).
@ProjectSun91
@ProjectSun91 10 лет назад
MsAbixxx Indeed. Just to show that Kyubey simply has no respect to these poor girls no matter what excuses he makes which is why I pretty baffled about the whole entropy concept. Hell, the Incubators have no respect whatsoever and are responsible for everything by turning traumatized young girls into reality warping Free Energy generators carries zero risks. And finally, they are also responsible for helping turn poor Homura into a demon, pretty much what the Incubators initially sought out to be beyond their imagination thanks to their experiment and by opening up a Pandora's box. It's sort of like if the scientists on the Manhattan Project had just stood out in the open next to the Trinity bomb while performing the test detonation. It's basically, "We're meddling with cosmic forces beyond our ken, so lets just stand here and watch. What could possibly go wrong?"

@SEELE-ONE
@SEELE-ONE 8 лет назад
+Juay DeRito Thoughout the series and into this movie, leitmotifs are used for the characters and certain situations -in fact, the "holy quintet" theme is a retake of past melodies asociated with each of the girls. In Rebellion, certain musical cues are played with Homura, the one heard in this particular scene is a variation of the opening song's first lines "Mada dame yo" (wich I recall tranlate to "no, not yet") which are also faintly heard when she talks to Madoka in the flower field.

It's depressing because Homura gave everyone a happy ending. She gave Kyoko a chance a be with Sayaka again. She gave Mami all her comrades and her friends back, even Nagisa. She gave Sayaka her life back before she was a witch. She gave Madoka the opportunity of being a normal girl that could be with her family and friends. And what does Homura get? Nothing. In the end, she doesn't get Madoka or even Madoka's true happiness, because she knows that the reality she created is fake. It's just so sad that no matter how hard she tries, her wish can never be fulfilled. She can't accomplish it by time traveling or even making a whole new world. It's a wish that's doomed to fail. And that is just so bleak.

@Noahk98
@Noahk98 3 года назад
My overall opinion is this: Madoka Kaname is an amazing and selfless girl. She made her wish and sacrifice because she had a deep rooted desire to save every magical girl from despair. To ensure that they would be at peace and not suffer anymore. This is the main motivation of her wish. However, Madoka was also in a tight spot. In a sense, she had her back up against a wall. She knew that only she was capable of making this wish a reality. She knows only she is capable of defeating Walpurgis, and protect her city and family. She doesn’t want Homura to keep time traveling because she knows it’s only causing her endless suffering, and Homura was about to give up and become a witch. Even though it may cause Madoka suffering and pain, she rose up and did what had to be done. I’m not saying Madoka made her wish simply because she had no choice; I’m saying she was in a difficult situation with the options presented to her. As I said, her true motivation was her desire to relieve magical girls from their suffering and restore hope to them. But this doesn’t mean Madoka isn’t suffering for it. Let me just list some things that show Madoka may be suffering as a god: 1. Her character song “see you tomorrow”. You can read the full version here (wiki.puella-magi.net/See_You_Tomorrow) but here is a snippet: “Saying, "See you later," I wave my hand Cracking a smile, yet I'm feeling lonely The truth is, I still have more to talk about But with the words "See you later" I say we'll meet again, but it's a lie and with my usual smile, I say "See you tomorrow" Compare these lyrics to the scene where Madoka bids farewell to Homura. Although Madoka was smiling and reassuring Homura, these lyrics may represent her concealed feelings at the time. 2. The flower field scene. I know Madoka’s memories are gone but it is still the real Madoka, but she doesn’t have her memories of being a god or her sacrifice. Even so, I think when Madoka says how she wouldn’t want to leave anyone and that it would hurt her, those feelings are still shared by Madoka when she made her sacrifice in the anime. But she went through with it anyways because she had a deep desire to save all magical girls from despair and because she knew she was the only one capable of defeating Walpurgis and save her town and protect her family. But she might still be hurting even as the law of cycles, since she is away from everyone. The director said this is the real Madoka, stating her true feelings at the time. 3. The dialogue between Madoka and Homura in the concept movie. Here it is: Madoka & Homura: Do you know what happiness is? Madoka: It's bright May sunshine. Homura: It's the warmth of family. Madoka: It's fried eggs for breakfast. Madoka & Homura: But there's nothing like that in Heaven. Madoka & Homura: Do you know what happiness is? Homura: It's having your name called by someone. Madoka: It's calling someone's name. Homura: It's when someone is thinking of you. Madoka & Homura: But God alone cannot have any of this. This dialogue gives us a bit of a clearer picture of what the law of cycles may be like. 4. Madoka’s scarred arm. When you see the clip where Madoka reaches out to Homura and brings her back to her normal self, you can see the animators included a bunch of scars on her arm. This could be interpreted to represent the heavy burden Madoka must now bear as a goddess. I believe that Madoka’s journey and character development are important and her free will should be respected. Madoka genuinely wanted to save these girls from despair, so I believe that her wish shouldn’t be invalidated. If Homura caused the law of cycles to stop working and witches came back, I would be COMPLETELY against what Homura did. I agree that it wasn’t right to forcibly take Madoka away... However, I also truly believe that Madoka was suffering to some degree, based off the list above. Which is why I both agree and disagree with Homuras actions. The way she did it isn’t right, yes, but she’s also freeing Madoka from an eternity of solitude and reuniting her with her family. Shes “kidnapping” her human half on earth, but she’s also freeing Madoka from a cosmic prison of loneliness and relieving her of that huge burden. She’s giving Sayaka another chance at life without disregarding her wish. Nagisa also gets another chance at life and is with Mami, who was always lonely. Kyoko is with Sayaka again. But I do think memory manipulation is wrong, and I also think this newfound fragile happiness won’t last forever. But, at the very least, these girls get to have some peace. And those nasty incubators won’t cause more trouble since Homura has them under her control. Personally, I think that while Madoka is happy to give magical girls salvation and be their hope, a part of her (her human self, her humanity) is also sad and lonely. Which is why I have mixed feelings overall, but at least Madoka gets to be with her family for the time being. But I do believe this happy fabricated utopia won’t last forever and there will be problems in the future. I want a rebellion sequel and I want it now! I’m hoping they announce something on the tenth anniversary website.

I mean...well yeah, you have it now. It's coming. We just don't know if it happens soon or late, this year or next year. But you see...I think after all, Homura might not be the final one to oppose Madoka, based on what's shown on the teaser, I think you watched it and it must be a surprise to see Walpurgis in the new movie. I think you're absolutely right about Madoka isn't happy being a God. Here's what is written about Rebellion. "Urobuchi was also worried about ending with Homura ascending along Madoka, saying it would not be a happy one for Homura's character since she would disappear instantly. He also wanted to create an ending where Madoka escapes from her fate as a God, since a middle-school girl becoming a God is too much to bear.[8]" Also, both Shinbo and Urobuchi defends Homura's action. "Urobuchi and Shinbo defended Homura turning to a devil. Shinbo said that had Homura ascended with Madoka to heaven, the Incubators (Kyubey) would try to steal Madoka's power by experimenting on other magical girls, which would result in a bad ending.[80] Urobuchi said Homura did not deny Madoka's wish.[81]" (Wikipedia). Yep, these two would fight sooner or later bc of their dualism, but I think they'll eventually come to a resolution in the end. Let's see how things will go based on this.

A lot of people in this comments section are talking about how satisfying it is to see Kyubey put in his place. I took away something a little different from this final scene. Homura is standing at the top of the cliff, seemingly waiting for someone. She hears a faint rustle in the bushes and quickly turns, only to find it's Kyubey. Visibly disappointed, Homura proceeds to dance around Kyubey's beaten and trembling body, almost like she's mocking him for his eternal suffering he'll have to endure. At the last moment she eyes her corrupted soul gem born of her corrupted love. With one last wicked smile, she dives off the cliff, presumably to her death. At the end, we see an image of a locked door with a ribbon chaining it shut. There are several things to take away from this scene aside from Kyubey's Requiem style fate. Homura was waiting for someone to be with her, to finally get one more chance to be with Madoka. But no one else comes. Alone in the new reality she's created Homura accepts herself as the 'true evil'. In the end all that mattered to her was Madoka's true happiness but even that isn't fulfilled. Deep down, she knows how rotten her actions truly are. She violated Madoka's ultimate wish for everyone's happiness over her own existence. Because to her, Madoka's life is more important to her than anything else. After seeing Madoka upset by the changes and almost reverting back to her god form Homura realizes that the undeniable truth is that Madoka will never be truly happy in this new world. The wish Homura destroyed herself over, through countless timelines, will never reach fruition. Some may argue Homura has truly become a force of evil but there are several details that disagree with that. In earlier scenes, where Homura sits alone in this new universe we see the images of witches everywhere, running rampantly in the new world. However, these beings only seem visible to Homura (the other mains can see them too initially but then lose the ability when Homura rewrites their memories). From that point of logic we can conclude that the witches in the background from earlier are symbolic of her inner self. This makes sense because Homura is essentially the god of the new world. And its images and laws are bent to her desires and thoughts. Her sitting alone at a table for two, with everyone passing by her shows how she'll always be alone and never acknowledged as someone to befriend or trust. Just an unclean demon. The witches throw tomatoes at her, symbolizing how deep down Homura spites and mocks herself for letting things end the way they do. Even the witches mock her for lying to herself and the universe. The tomato hits her head and trickles down in a similar appearance to blood, showing how Homura suffers for her choices but the pain doesn't phase her anymore. The purple river of juice and the black feathers falling from the sky are symbolic of Homura's control over the new world being one of instability and imperfection. While people are now happy with their lives in this new reality, that happiness is based off lies. And a world with nothing but happiness, like a withered black bird or a nearly broken glass, are bound to fade into nothing one day. Finally, we see Homura tearing up when she ties Madoka's hair back up with the red ribbon. The one Madoka left for her in the original reality when she sacrificed herself for the universe. This shows that in the end, no matter what fake happiness she may instill in others she realizes in this moment her wish will never be granted. She'll never feel hope or true love ever again. For that is the fate of all Magical Girls. Homura is left unhappy because deep down she still desires the truth above the lies. But what about future Magical Girls? Won't they turn into witches again? No, Homura didn't completely destroy the Law of Cycles established by Madoka. Witches are still forever gone from the true reality and only wraiths exist. But now, it's highly unlikely new Magical Girls will be born as Kyubey and all the incubators bear the eternal responsibility of enduring their pain and misery should they happen to vanish. In this new reality Madoka and the rest of the mains do not become Magical Girls, since Homura rewrote all their memories about being them in the first place. They still possess their rings, but they are not able to recall what they are for. And if Kyubey is not there to remind them of their abilities they'll just never have to fight Wraiths. It's unlikely Homura rewrote every Magical Girls' memories, considering there are hundreds of thousands more in the world. They'll bear the responsibility of fighting Wraiths. But the fact Homura erased Mami, Sakura, Sayaka, and Madoka's memories specifically shows that in her own twisted way, she does care about them living happily and peacefully, regardless of whether their new happiness is based on lies. Ultimately, Homura accepts she'll forever be alone in the new reality. With no one left to live for and with her old friends now her enemies Homura goes to the top of the cliff to end herself for good. Kyubey is the last thing she sees before and it gives her a sense of disappointment but also twisted satisfaction. At least in the end, Madoka and her friends won't suffer from the burden of being made Magical Girls anymore so long as Kyubey suffers eternally. She dances around his body, contrasting how in the opening of the movie she wasn't dancing with the other characters. This is symbolic of how while everyone else lives happy about their final choices (even Sayaka if you count her after Madoka uses her wish in the original timeline), Homura is not left happy by her final choice. Her dance is not a joyful one. It's a mocking, disdainful one, showing her corrupted sense of morality and love compared to the rest of the cast. Homura glances at her soul gem one more time and smiles at it, accepting herself as the 'enemy' of the world. A 'demon'. With that, she flings herself off the cliff, ending her life living for no one's sake, not even her own. If her wish will never bring her true happiness the least she can do is die the demon that she has become. Finally, the door sealed by the ribbon in the end is the same one Madoka went through in Homura's consciousness to save her. But now the door is chained shut. By a ribbon of the same color as Homura's. Due to her own actions Homura has now prevented anyone from saving her. Her true desire was to die as a witch to let Madoka live peacefully. But now, even that hope is gone. In the end, Homura started lonely and ended lonely. That, is probably the most tragic fate any character has received in this series. Edit: Thank you so much for the support guys! I honestly didn't think too many people would notice this!

What I find truly scary about this is how Kyubey looks when you look at it close up. There are two reasons for this, one is his appearance. Whenever, Kyubey is damaged it can make a new body for itself as seen multiple times. However, here it is damaged to the point that it can only be defined as a 'cruel miracle' that it is still 'alive'. So that asks a very good question. Why cannot it not heal? It has an unlimited number of bodies, so what is preventing it from healing? The second is his eyes. The emotion in them is fear. Let me just reiterate that. Kyubey is afraid. This is the creature which has a hive mind and is practically immortal as it cannot be 'killed'. It is the creature that has seen so much, such as creatures like Kriemhild Gretchen and possibly worse, all the while never battering an eye. But here he is afraid. He is afraid of Homura did to him. The immortal hive minded alien is scared of Homura. This leaves a terrifying implication. Homura has ascended to the level from which she can damage an immortal hive minded being to the point that he cannot repair mentally of physically.

When Homura summons her soul gem out of her hand it’s the same thing magical girls have that hold their soul gems in their transformation, think Mami’s flower, Sayaka’s crescent, and most importantly Homura’s diamond. That’s on her hand. The same hand. This isn’t Homura in a civilian form, where magical girls carry their soul gems as rings, but this is Homura in her ‘new’ magical girl. Homulucifer is Homura’s permanent form, but now she has to transform to appear like she’s normal. She flipped the concept on its head just like she did with flipping the law of cycles

1:12 "To dream of closed windows represents loneliness and abandonment. If in the dream you are looking through the window, it means that you see your goals as unattainable. Also, your subconscious is asking you to know your limitations and to know yourself a little more." I think the closed window with the pink ribbon at the end may represent Homura's inability to form a reciprocated bond with Madoka after what she did to her, after betraying her intentions, a sacrifice that Homura herself accepted at the end while talking to Madoka in that new reality, but nevertheless, she will have to reflect on her actions at some point. On the other hand, although the ending was not clear, I think it may represent that Madoka's powers were sealed, almost fading away, which would be a very simple but appropriate meaning.

Kyubey opened Pandora's box again, but this time hope wasn't the only thing that came out. Honestly, this ending is very logical. Homura started out in the series as the "Dark Magical Girl" antagonist, that threatened people with violence for their own good. Now as the devil, she continues on. After all those time loops, Homura believes that her view is the only correct one. That Madoka is too selfless to do what is necessary, as she fell into Kyubey's trap refusing to abandon Homura. Homura may cherish Madoka, but Homura only trusts her own decisions.

Madoka became a God, and Homura became a Devil. Good and Evil. One too selfless, one too selfish. :) I like it. I really do. Sad as one may see it, I do think that, for the world to trully move on and have a proper balance, it must have BOTH Good and Evil keeping tabs on each other. Unlike everyone else apperantly, I did not feel sad at all with this movie. Rather, I felt happy. :) It is a tragedy that Homura and Madoka ended up the way they are, but in a way, they are indeed reunited forever again. Even if fighting and opposing each other, but they're together again. Not like they wanted to, but they are. And we have to remember that, by this point, none of them are trully human anymore. Madoka became a Concept. Of Hope. Of Love. She is God now. Homura became a Concept as well. This time, in opposition. She's the Devil now. If Madoka is selfless, Homura is selfish. One is the opposite of the other, yet they both complete each other perfectly. And thus, the world becomes this. This amazing mixture of both hope and despair. One no longer overcoming the other, but both coexisting at the same balance. Like Homura herself said, "one day you may become my enemy too", so one Concept hasn't dominated the other. And as she said, she was fine with it. :) They became something other than human, but they're still going to be together. Forever. Honestly, the more I look into this the less reasons I find to feel sad about this movie like everyone else. :\ Weird. We got some really nice reunions due to Homura's "Reality Marble" so to speak. Sayaka got the chance to reunite with Kyoko and have a proper firendship with her. Even if memories of that are gone, having such an event happen is already a milestone better than the way their relationship had ended both in the original timeline and in the Hope-dominating one. Mami actually got to meet and befriend Bebe, the magical girl who, when turned into a witch, was the one responsible for her death in the original timeline. That honestly caught me by surprise, that Bebe would genuinely come to care and appreciate Mami. I did not see that coming and I loved it. For as breif as it was, we got to see all five Magical Girls living, fighting and being together. To me, as simple and humble as it was, that alone was enough to make me happy. :) As for the end result, honestly, I did not feel that bad at all. It wasn't the "right choice" as we would call it, but it was the natural course. Having spent so much time trying to save/get Madoka, Homura's love turning into somewhat of an obsession didn't feel far-fetched for me and I actually could see it coming. And I also thought it was a nice parallel. How Madoka and Homura are so similar in their love for each other and the lenghts they're willing to go for the other, but how they're so opposite to each other as well. If Madoka becomes the God of this universe, then Homura will become its Devil. Btw, yes. I felt deeply satisfied that Kyubey and the Incubators got trolled all around through this movie. Like many people said, they had no real reason to try to overtake The Law of Circle, nothing ever implied they weren't getting enough energy already. But they wanted more. They wanted a system that could provide them with more energy in a much faster pace than the one Madoka had created. In that, they were messing with Cthulhu's grave. Seeing Homura take her long, desired revenge on them, which I sort of felt like mine too, and them just being so hopelessly unable to understand anything, even sounding desperate and hysterical about it... GOD! I must say, I think I felt a devil smile inside of me. :) It doesn't matter if they're emotionless. It doesn't matter what their original goal was. They had a system. They had their energy. But they just HAD to try and take it all. Curiosity and ambition led them to their dooms. I felt no remorse whatsoever for what Homura, the Devil, did to them. One should know better than trying to dominate something they cannot possibly understand. Like Kyubey would say, "it's only natural the result would be this." :) Aaaaaaaaand that's where I stop my long-ass comment! ':P Sorry! I got carried away. I just couldn't help it! I *JUST* finished watching the movie for the first time and I really wanted to lay down my feelings and impressions to someone. And out of all the comments I've seen in this video, yours felt like the one whose points and comments were more similar to how I felt during this movie. :) _"Honestly, this ending is very logical. Homura started out in the series as the "Dark Magical Girl" antagonist, that threatened people with violence for their own good. Now as the devil, she continues on._ _After all those time loops, Homura believes that her view is the only correct one. That Madoka is too selfless to do what is necessary, as she fell into Kyubey's trap refusing to abandon Homura._ _Homura may cherish Madoka, but Homura only trusts her own decisions."_ In resonance to what you said, I ended the film thinking like this: *if the Madoka series was telling the birth of God, the Rebellion movie is telling the birth of the Devil.* When I put it that way, everything falls into place. :)

What Homura had done is selflessness. Homura was ready to give up her own salvation as a magical girl and throw away her only chance of seeing her beloved friend Madoka in order to protect her from incubators. Homura didn't become the literal Devil but she became a Devil in metophorical sense. Homura is a Devil because she disrespected and distruped the 'Law Cycle' and took Madoka back down to Earth. This seemed as Devil work to other magical girls including Sayaka because they did not know her true intentions behind her seemingly selfish action. It was morally selfless because it was an act of defence to protect her friend Madoka from Incubators. Also, as Homura said she only took a piece of the 'Law Cycle' and the new rewritten universe is more of a fake universe where no magical girls exists and in the original universe the 'Law Cycle' is still collecting other magical girls. This is why Homura also said that this world will start to seem real to Sayaka and in the time when Homura was capturing Madoka in the ending of Rebellion we could clearly see the universe being seperated. However, since there are no magical girls to fight the wraiths in the new fake universe, Homura is using incubators as slaves since they are stuck with everyone else in this new fake world. Hence, incubators cannot interfere with 'Law Cycle' because they are not even part of the original universe anymore. Additonally, it also keeps incubators busy because they are too busy killing wraiths for homura that they can't plan back to destroy this fake universe.

Deniz Ayan I think what Homura did is not really selfish or selfless. It seems like something selfish but she did it to let Madoka have a happy life with friends and family. But then it can't be selfless because her reasons for doing it are entirely selfish. She didn't listen to what Madoka wanted and only did what she thought was best for Madoka. I really hope that the two can have a happy ending in the next movie because right now they are in a very toxic relationship (mainly because how broken Homura is).

Look back on this in contrast to Homura becoming Homulilly. The missing cliff where her chair was while she sits where Madoka was. She truly gave up everything of herself to save the one she considered her more important half. Usually we’d expect a happy ending from this story, but this is very interesting. The beginning of the Madoka series starts off with her as the main character but ends with homura as the new main character. I believe the ending of the series and movie represents Madoka as the savior and Homura as evil. So these endings are not happily ever afters, but they are each a legend of how both Madoka and Homura’s story’s end. They both wallow into darkness. This would be considered a tragic ending of a dark fantasy themed anime.

The movie and the series were very good. Those who fail to understand the plot, or what is taking place need to watch it again to fully understand. SPOILER. People believe that Homura was the bad guy at the end are wrong in my opinion. Remember that her wish was to save Madoka, and also remember the conversation she had with Madoka in the field. Madoka said it would break her heart to be separated from those she loved. knowing that and since in some ways Homura's wish creates a paradox with Madoka being a God it makes sense. Homura knew there was no way to fulfil her wish in the traditional way, so she chose to become the Devil and create new universal laws. In the end the law of cycles remained and at the same time Homura could be with the one she loved most. " The road to Hell is paved with good intentions"

I think the fact that Homura embodies Madoka's happiness as her own is exactly the very reason why this very scene, why she even became a demon, exists. She herself is selfish, not to other people, but to herself; bear with me. She ignores what makes HER a unique person, what makes HER someone different from the rest, and devotes her own life and existence to someone else. The very fact that everyone sees her as a sick and twisted demon for that makes for perfect surreal representation of what tends to happen to a good number of people in relationships IRL. I think this movie was a masterpiece.

I feel bad for him. Yes, Kyubey did horrible, horrible things. But, being an emotionless, unfeeling creature, he could not possibly understand how much pain, how much suffering, he was causing. He operated purely on logic, much like a machine, because that is just how his race is; they appear cold, cruel, even evil to us, but if you were to see it from their perspective...they're just trying to keep the universe running, and they're doing it through the method they believe is most effective. In their culture, there is no concept of "good" or "evil". They are completely foreign concepts that do not exist in their culture. Think about this...if his kind COULD feel emotion, if they COULD base their decisions off how they felt, off the emotions they felt...do you think they would still do what they did? Certainly, some may. But if they could feel guilt, regret...if they could understand how a human felt, I think many of them would refuse, and would try to find a better way. Having emotion would likely also give them individuality, and I think that might have happened to this Kyubey at the end, here. Most people laugh and rejoice at his suffering in this final scene, but I don't. I can't do that. I don't see an evil, horrible creature that deserves what happened to him. I see a broken, confused creature who deserves a second chance. A being who, at one moment had no concept of emotion, but then suddenly felt so much pain. Guilt. Regret. Agony. Despair. And remorse... The horror, at realizing what he had done. The guilt, finally understanding and seeing it from a human perspective. So full of feelings that he did not understand, that he did not know how to handle, how to manage. Just try to think about it from his position. You did all these things, with the honest mindset that it was for the good of the universe. You had no feeling, no emotion, you were just doing what you were born, practically programmed to do. You had no concept of right or wrong, you were just doing your job. Then suddenly...you were cold. You were quivering. You suddenly had a heart. You were severed from your hive mind, and became an individual. Cold, alone, you lay there as your new-found heart and mind, something you could not even comprehend before, are assaulted by every negative emotion imaginable. You are crushed by the guilt of what you had done. You finally understand. You finally understand what it means to be human, to have emotion, to know "right" and "wrong". You know how loss feels. You feel remorse, you want to take it all back, you want to personally apologize to every single person you've ever hurt. You cry, and cry, and cry, as your chaotic mind endlessly cycles through painful thought after painful thought. All you can do is just lay there, weak, crying, as you are crushed by negativity. ...Can you truly say, that you wouldn't give him a second chance, if this was the situation? Would you not comfort him and teach him about the emotions he is feeling, and wish for him to redeem himself? He understands now. He understands what he could not understand before...and it's horrifying to him. ...I just want to pick him up and hug him close. Let him cry it out, and tell him, "I forgive you."

Homura probably let Madoka take a vacation from godhood to enjoy her human life which was taken from her. To strengthen my theory, In the end Homura sings "Not Yet" which in its lyrics has "The night is only half gone, what to do?" and "Where is the child who sleeps in this neat warm home?" which make sense with Homura splitting Madoka's human side back to existence. And finally when Madoka comes back, then they will live happily ever after

This scene always catchs my interest, some people could interpreted it as an attempt to suicide, or something that evoked her grief as a witch. In that that particular scene, Madoka did the same, she stood on top of the chair and let herself fall off in front of Homura almost like she did here. Madoka sacrificed herself in order to same all magical girls from the suffering and grief to become a witch, letting Homura behind, even when this last one was suffering the most. Homura, in some way, did the same, she sacrificed her right and last wish to finally be with Madoka at last. At the end she did get Madoka, even if she didn't want to, but at the same time, Homura cannot be with her, she got Madoka for herself, but cannot share the time after-life she wanted so bad. So, Homura got everything and nothing at the same time, she got the power to re-write the whole universe and Law of Circle that GoddessMadoka did, and Homura took it in her place, but instead of Homura been the one holding the grief from every Magical Girl in existence and beyond (like Madoka, because she's that kind), Homura put Kyubey in that charge. One could say that Homura could hold this job without taking away Madoka in the first place or letting Kyubey hold such a job... But personally, I think that wouldn't be possible in any way. Wishing for something always comes with ups and down. The UP for Homura about this last wish she made herself, was to save and got Madoka and to be with her in the same world, even if it's a lie... And the DOWN, is that she would never, EVER... Be with her, to be able to hold her, to tell her everything she had done in the past or to really live by her side... She is done with that, she quit trying, this was her last attempt to rescue her, it worked in a really fucked up way, but it worked...

@violetsnowfield 9 лет назад
Malorie Callio homura first thought that madoka'll like the life that homura gave to her, but when madoka said that it's wrong to break the rule (she doesn't remember about her breaking the cycle of magical girls), homura realized that madoka will remember the truth and become her enemy, because she broke the rule that was created by the law of cycles, meant by madokami. homura did everything to protect madoka, to fulfill her wish, by incubators knowing who's madokami, they could do the same thing that they did to homura to other magical girls, and the next time they do it, madokami is 100% will be controlled by them. knowing this, homura had no choice but to take madokami's position. afterall (i found it on the wiki), remember what junko told madoka in episode 6, that "doing something right doesn't mean there'll be a happy ending" and that "someone has to be in the wrong side to balance other people's need to be in the right one". madoka thought that what she did is the rightest, when it might be worse than the witch system.(seriously.. witches living with magical girls together? i don't like that idea a bit, even they're happy that they won't spread their curses, is that meant that they'll live in the law of cycles with their despair...) she also tried to ignore the incubators' attempt on her, because of the salvation she gave to magical girls, and tried to make homura happy by her salvation, not knowing that it might had made homura mad inside and that it would mean; everything that she had done to protect her would be in vain because of madokami's duty, because madoka never understand (although she said it in the final episode, she said she only knew, not understand) how much homura has gone through just to protect her, and that madokami would thwart it off just like that (homura wanted to meet madoka, yet at the same time, she wanted to protect her). "but can she understand that i'm doing it for her own good. she may or she may not [...] but tell me which one is better, giving up on her or giving her the wrong impression about you?" that's precisely the matter in rebellion. madoka had done it, ignoring incubators' attempt for homura's salvation, while homura thought that madoka did it out of sense of duty as a goddess. she didn't want madoka's wish to be destroyed by the incubators (erasing witches before they born). why they're going to be enemies, after homura declared it? homura knew that madoka might won't understand her decision, not knowing it's for her (madoka)'s sake, she won't ever giving up on her, and she accept the second possibility (giving her the wrong impression) as the consequence. also, even when it looks like she's happy with her decision, she's not, 100% not. she still has sanity and she knows what she has done is 100% wrong, (someone has to be in the wrong side, and madoka, even if you might not agree, her wish in 100% right and selfless) and now she's feeling guilty and might have regretted her choice, but she can't blame it on any of her "friends" (like making them suffering in the new universe or living with tragedies), because it's her own decision, and so, put it all on kyubey who had made her done that (taking over madoka). then, why homura told kyubey about madokami and the witch system? do you know how it feels when you found yourself living in a new universe that has no one ever remembered what your bestfriend's sacrifice has done to the universe? it's a logical question that "why don't you face a greater risk for some far bigger benefits?". that was what kyubey thought, but he could easily believe homura's story, because of his (greedy and emotionless, heartless) nature. When homura said that she was so stupid (in the flower bed scene and when both of them were about the destroy the incubators' seal), it's not stupid, it's because she couldn't believe that she made a horrible mistake (telling kyubey about madoka and witch) because she was so weak and couldn't help her loneliness and yearning for seeing and being with madoka again. jumping from the cliff might symbolize that homura's wish has finally fulfilled and she might end the world, just like what she said to sayaka, because she knows that the world where they are right now is a fake and deceptive one. P.S : the opening in the tv series actually gave hints about rebellion too (you can say it like that, or not), at how madoka and homura glare at each other like enemies. at the sunset, homura stands on a higher building (might be referring her current position as the "goddess" of the world where madoka and co live now (her barrier)), while madoka looks up on homura unhappily (this might refer at how she doesn't like homura's decision?) my speculation about te 4th installment? it might be released in winter season ( i hope it's this year), since the ending of the post credit scene shows us something like snows (or kyubey's fur, or what so ever) are falling as homura falls down.

I don’t really get a lot of the pessimism around this ending. Homura creates a world where all of the girls could have normal lives, and even as Madoka started to remember who she was supposed to be, after calming her down, Homura also was able to accept that one day Madoka would indeed remember she is the law of cycles and eventually gave to return to her duties, but that day will likely be after she’s had a fulfilling, happy life, or at least a decent childhood. And, hey, knowing Madoka, when she does inevitably return to being the law of cycles, it’s likely Homura will have her cake and eat it too, so to speak. Unless y’all think Homura turning into the devil was enough to make Madoka hate her? I think that’s unlikely personally, and would like to hope Homura will have a truly happy ending. Also the incubators finally understand suffering, so that’s a plus!

@elemileTLDR

+Lu-Lu - They might be related, but I'm not sure how. If you remember, Ultimate Madoka actually defeated herself as a witch, and that's how she became a goddess. Homu captured part of Madoka's goddess power, so the half moon could be a relic of Madoka's universe. But what about the cliff and missing chair, then? if the field represents their love, it could mean Homu's waiting there to be reunited with Madoka when their fight is finally over. In any case, the missing halves represent Madoka, who is "not yet" quite there with Homu.

@@sayyestofairness4266 Kyubey isn't supposed to be directly intimidating. It's a cute and fluffy creature that scares you with its true nature, not anything on the outside.

I personally think that Homura decided that cursing Kyubey to feel emotions was the perfect punishment. Though at the same time, it ironically could make you feel really sad for him. He is now able to comprehend all the pain and suffering he's caused - and what we're seeing might actually be remorse for it all starting to set in. A human's experience of a single unhappy life can be horrible enough - just imagine what feeling the combined weight of so many of them must be like...Consider how Angel felt when his soul was restored in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and you might get what I mean.

In an earlier scene, Madoka told Homura that she would never want to leave anyone behind, and that - even if it were selfish - she would want to stay with her friends and family. Homura interpreted that as Madoka saying that she wouldn't/didn't want to be Godoka, and tried to grant that wish by creating an illusion-dream-world-thing where everyone can be happy. Sayaka is over Kyousuke, he's dating Hitomi and he's not injured, Kyoko lives with Sayaka as a makeshift family, Mami finally gets to stop being alone because of Nagisa, Nagisa isn't a witch, and Madoka gets to stay with her family and friends. On the downside, the law of the cycles still works, but isn't being run by Godoka, and Homura is now a power-crazy demon. The one who is suffering most here is Homura who A.) knows she just fucked shit up, B.) feels intensely guilty about it, but didn't see another option, nor any way of fixing the fuckup, C.) is completely broken and without hope for anything ever improving, and D.) is beginning to completely lose her marbles, as evidenced by the whole 'tormenting Kyubey then falling off a cliff' deal.

Moon is in half, love ungained. The spot, the chair where Madoka sat is gone along with the ground, which Homura leans against hoping to feel the touch of Madoka's shoulder

I hope Homura won't suffer anymore after the new sequel.
