I’m going to just say it, Madonna to me,is the most important contribution to music and pop culture, yes, there was MJ, Elvis, Tina Turner, Cher Ect..but, none of them were willing to put there careers where their mouths were and give voice to so many minorities. Not to mention the sheer volume of hits that came from her ability to ease into any genre of music and make it accessible for the masses. There are too many reasons to list, but I fear the history books are not going to ever do this woman justice.❤❤❤❤

What I love about Madonna is that she is good at many things. Good singer. Good dancer, Good songwriter. Good producer. Good mother. But what Madonna excels at more than most of her peers is that she is a GREAT ARTIST. The Art and the message come first and foremost. Always changing, trying new things, pushing boundaries, and making the world talk. She doesn't care about the money and acclaim as much. (I'm sure she loves that too), but for her it's always been about the ART. That's why she's shines brighter than most. Long live the Queen!

Madonna doesn't just perform her songs like most artists do, she tells a story with each act! She plays characters, her dancers and backing singers are different characters in the story. Madonna let's her team shine as well, choosing to share the spotlight with them. You could stitch together from every tour, the transitions between acts when Madonna is not on stage and it would still be a concert I'd go and see.

I still have the VCR tape on which I recorded the HBO broadcast of her concert in Nice, France during this tour. I remember my whole family looking at the TV set and being shocked and confused by half of what she was doing, especially during Like A Virgin. This was Madonna being Madonna, and even then she had haters and pearl clutchers. I personally gravitated toward her music and persona for this reason. Those buttons needed to be pushed. I recommend, when you get to the Justify My Love era (if you decide to go there), that you react to her Nightline interview, in which she defended her work and did not back down. She is very intelligent and articulate and masterful with communicating her message. ❤️

Yep. Before this tour, live concerts were just a drum kit, guitarists flanking, and the vocalist up front belting out the song. Nothing more than a pub gig on a grander scale. Madonna decided that she wanted to perform and put on a show, that she was in fact more than just a vocalist, and she therefore transformed the concert experience (for the better) forever. We have much to be thankful for!

There were others who laid the groundwork before her - David Bowie (one of her biggest influences) and Michael Jackson to a lesser degree. But Madonna took it to the next level and definitely changed the game. Pop concerts were never the same after this, and most haven't reached the level of theatricality. I don't even think Madonna herself ever reached the same level as she did during this segment of this tour.
@DistantCousin

Pretty much. The only artists who had come in any way close to this theatrical was David Bowie's Glass Spider Tour 1987. Also high concept, big budget, stadium scale. On a smaller scale you had Kate Bush's tour in the late 70's. She actually invented the headset microphone concept!

Now you know what we meant when we said you need to watch the Like a Prayer performance in the context of the show. It is so much more powerful this way. She did tone down Like a Virgin for Japan quite a bit though. It usually included a lot more...self pleasuring. 😉 You definitely need to bring at least one box of tissues for Live to Tell on the Celebration Tour alone. Without a doubt one of the most powerful and heart wrenching performances ever put on a stage.

The religious segment alone is so exhausting most performers would need a break after Like a Prayer. But she just continues on as if she just had 8 hours sleep. Also I love how she always shares the spotlight with her dancers. The Like a Virgin performance almost got her arrested in Canada. They pressured her to change the content but she of course refused.

This tour. The mix of masculime and feminine. The contradiction of sexuality and religious ecstasy of Virgin into Prayer, the accessibility of her music. And that vulnerable and beautiful corset. Re-watching this with you guys is so fun. Love seeing your reactions and emotions being stirred. I went to see this in 1990, and your so right, the energy and excitement was off the roof. She was in her prime at this moment of her career. Also, she set the standard in how concerts became with this tour. It's because of her that concerts throughout the years after have become huge productions with loads of sets and lights and dancing. It was her and Michael Jackson at the time who set that standard we see in concert even today. Both turn their tours into stage productions. What I also love about this tour, this was before she started singing to backing tracks on tour. It's just mostly her, back up singers, dancers and the band. In fact, the two main back up singers became a staple to her show up until her Drowned World Tour. Those two performed with her and did a lot of back up singing for her throughout the years up until 2001. After that, Donna Delory stayed with her for a couple more tours, but then Madonna started putting her back up singers more in the back, rather showcased, like she's done here. And while I say she's singing live for the pretty much the entire show, there are only a few times where she lets a backing track assist her. Express Yourself, Where's The Party and Vogue were mostly lipsynced/or her relying a lot on a backing track to support her vocals. Unfortuntely, her tours of late, she relies heavily on backing tracks and at times it's hard to hear her sing completely live. In her most recent tours, she tends to record live vocals during rehearsals and use them heavily as playback, so she doesn't have to sing live when she doesn't want to. When you go to the Celebration Tour, you'll see her pay homage to this tour several times, specifically the bed scene, some of the costumes and the dance with her arms from Papa Don't Preach to re-enact the bed scene in a different way. You'll have to see it to understand. It's good that you are experiencing her old shows, videos and witnessing her looks and costumes because again all through the Celebration tour she pays homage to all that, whether it her in costume or re-visiting a song or having her dancers emulate past looks by her. Thank you for these reactions and I look forward to the follow ups to this one. You'll be further mesmerized with this show as you go on.

It’s a shame we didn’t suggest you react to the HBO taping in France, as you would have gotten the real power of the show and especially the Like A Virgin performance. What i like a lot of Madonna tours is that they are like a spiritual journeys where there are a lot of subjects in scene, like sex, religion, anger, sadness, feminism, social issues, etc and they are mixed together in a extraordinary perfomance. It's not just a singer singing him or her songs, it's more like a theather play or a musical film. I already enjoyed seeing that you also enjoyed this tour. For me it's her best tour, maybe cause i saw it when i was young and captivated me more cause of that age. It's really on point. Kisses ❤❤❤

Before Madonna, female performers could be and were sexy, but it was usually for the entertainment of men.... to me, she redefined sexuality and allowed women to define their sexuality on their own terms.

I saw this concert in my city, Rome Italy, clear protests came from the Vatican (evidently they had seen the concert before us😅) but from that moment on, for me and I imagine for many other young homosexuals, Madonna became something more important. Clearly she was telling us that we could free ourselves from shame and live our identity without contradictions. All this happened at a time when AIDS was a real tragedy. It was all so strong. It was a fact that went beyond the songs or the image.

Excellent review ladies! So glad you enjoyed. When you see the celebration tour, you will see callbacks to previous tours. You will see the conical bra recreated, the ponytail, and the Papa Don’t Preach dance. Good thing you saw the ponytail, right? 😉 Everything about this concert is brilliant. The back up dancers, the back up singers, Niki and Donna… Donna sounds exactly like Madonna, and Niki has incredible vocals. The remixes are killer… especially Like a Prayer! Amazing! And more amazing, every concert gets better, and bigger. Better transitions, better remixes, better dancers. This is why I am enjoying your Madonna journey so much. Taking Madonna and her work chronologically allows you to enjoy the evolution of her and her music. Ty for reviewing this. Have a lovely day ♥️ See you tomorrow 😉

The excess and enjoyment of one’s self in Like a Virgin, to the whole Catholic guilt section of Like a Prayer turning to defiance with Oh Father and pro choice message that SHE’s CHOSEN HERSELF to keep the baby in Papa Don’t Preach … she really was ingenious, INGENIOUS. I remember when Papa Don’t Preach came out and anti abortion, conservatives briefly praising her, to only realize she was really trying to show pro choice didn’t mean pro abortion, and they were super butt hurt.

I only can imagine the conservatives’ butt pain lol They were celebrating Madonna’s message because that’s the right thing to do: to be free to chose what we FEEL it’s better in each occasion; but that’s not what conservatives want, they want everybody to be a slave of the system, right?

There's a behind the scenes movie called Truth or Dare. It's a documentary about this tour. Such a great movie. Pretty racey though. I think you would really enjoy all the behind the scenes action.

It seems that in the “religious” section of the show, Madonna shows us how “system” (economic-political system) has made traps for us by controlling the way we think and the way we act through its institutions such as church and family institutions (that’s why she put together the priest and the father in “Oh father” video and here as well). If Michelle Foucault were alive he would be very proud of Madonna taking his “History of Sexuality” further! I love Madonna!! Then in the next section, it seems to me that Madonna shows her point of view on how we can free ourselves from all kind of prejudices (social diseases like racism) striking a pose (in the sense of taking a stand on an issue and fight for what we believe in) and being a “vogue” in the sense of being someone who inspires others to be better versions of ourselves instead of following those “role models” that the system created for us (like saints, hollywood characters, etc)

Great reaction as always! I saw this in London and like others have said, this Japan show feels a little tame in comparison to how she performed in other countries. I remember one of her London dates was being broadcast live on the BBC and she was warned not to swear. She then went on air and said the F word 15 times in one minute!! Once you have seen the entirety of this concert you should watch the Truth or Dare documentary if you haven't seen it! It gives you an insight into the drama behind the scenes and enables you to get to know the dancers and background singers who are a big part of the Madonna journey. Also there are lots of very iconic Madonna moments with Madonna just being well, very 'Madonna' lol

Looking back, the main difference between this show and the last two is that she cursed more and her voice was tired; though I know the dancing got better the more the tour progressed.😁

As expected the patriarchy of the Catholic Church condemned Madonna and this tour for its sexual and erotic segment here and its use of religious iconography/objects for what the Church sees as mixing the “profane” with the sacred. Ironically Madonna grew up steeped in Catholic theology full of depiction of opposite dualities like good and evil, the sinner and the saint, the prostitute and the virgin, of meek/docile women but also of militant heroines like the biblical Judith, Joan of Arc; of transgression and redemption, of angels and demons, heaven and hell, and so forth. Madonna masterfully mirrors these contradictions/contrast in her artistic themes with frankness and honesty and the Church goes on an uproar. The Like A Virgin/Like A Prayer performance is a brilliant artistic depiction of these dualities. This is a Church with a rigid, puritanical dogma that values celibacy, sexual abstinence, chastity and the subordination of women’s roles to men. In the Church’s eyes, Madonna’s artistry and female empowerment activism subverts all of these. Nudity, sexuality and eroticism has been present in Western still art (sculptures, paintings, statuaries, etc.) dating back to classical Greece and Rome, and these were personified in their mythology and pantheon of gods and goddesses. The advent of Christianity imposed a strict morality code that censured these ideas and their depiction in art. But despite censorship, these themes continued on Western art through time-you can go to museums today and view these. It’s on films, books, live shows and studied in school. I think the public in general has a more secular, open-minded view of the ‘controversial’ aspects of Madonna’s artistry which accounts for her popularity and success in the pop music world and culture. Luv your wonderful reaction to this tour. So much, much more spectacular videos and tours ahead in your Madonna journey.

And back then music at pop concerts was mostly being performed live by the band - That has got less and less over the years - mostly pre recorded elements with not much live instrument playing
