She didn't just push the envelope, she fucking ripped that shit open. She changed the whole game and the music industry today. It's unbelievable how ahead of her time she was. So fucking brilliant and fearless
+jenniferene Ahead of her time? My ass! She was just telling Americans how they should just as promiscuous, perverted, anti-religious, and "loose" as Europeans tend to be. Anyone like her who criticizes the norms of her own country is not open minded and forward in time but just as bigoted as anyone who hates other cultures.
+jenniferene LMAO! But she's THE ONE who's the fucking hypocrite. Bitch tells Americans to shun violence and to adopt European norms of politics, sexuality, and culture. Yet makes a video "What it feels like to be a girl" where she goes around shooting people then killing herself at the end. She uses gun shot sounds at MDNA and shows violent images of people getting killed in front of young people at her concerts but had the nerve to say in this interview there's too much violence on TV. Not too mention her hypocritical statement "guns don't kill people, people kill people." Here she's saying that Americans are too prude and conservative but she doesn't want her own kids Lourdes and Rocco to have serious romantic relationships until they're 18 which even my cousin who's a fan of this ho bag admitted that to me. This sleaze is so hell bent on accusing Americans of opposing comprehensive sex ed but why the fuck did her brother even admit that this ho caught an STD herself and ended up with a couple of unwanted pregancies that aborted later. Even European stats on rape, AIDs, prostitution, and trafficking are not even that lower than what radical left wing nuts like her, idiotic professors, Hollyweirdos like them want people to believe. Europeans have fewer pregnancies though because they just don't like having as many kids as Americans want to.
sexobscura just because they came before her doesn’t mean they had more influence then her. Look at most female entertainers today they’re literally Madonna clones and admit to being as such
Oh she paved the way for women alright... thanks to Madonna, it's no longer about the music itself but rather women needing to dress like whores in their videos in order to sell their crap music.
There's nothing wrong in the fact of feeling admiration for Gaga and Ariana, I do. But I do feel that too for some older artists and I value everything they did to make society change in a good way, so why can't I show love for all of them???
mathias lowe you’re getting it wrong. He didn’t say you can’t love them, he was saying that young people these days discredit or tend to disrespect Madonna while Lady Gaga is seen as the real artist, the real pioneer.
I need you guys to understand why this should be forever marked in the history of television. Do you remember any other woman before this time doing the same on public television? Speaking and debating, DEFENDING herself and stading her ground? Godamn it! Madonna was all on fire, she was saying the things she wanted, she was opening up a gap, and trying to make the world see something obvious. Of course, you might say that deep down she just wanted to make money and be noticed. So what?! She works her ass off for it, since then, til now Madonna continues to bring everything to the table. That's one of the FEW pop artists, that are not build by her management team, she is herself, and even tho she is not always nice or right, she's an example of self confidence and self expression. For real, this woman, did a lot for the women in the business, and it's so sad that this credit is been taken out of her.
Sadboy 1999 - I totally agree with your point. I was about 14 when all of this took place and she was very targeted yet she remained focused, intelligent and her mastery of all of this kept her in place of the sort of ring master of the circus of that time. But she is/was not alone. Watch some of Marilyn Monroe’s interviews from the mid 1950’s, and relative to the time period, she was very much in the same seat as being a woman in charge of her sexuality and breaking social barriers at a time when women were not allowed to be as outspoken. Her delivery is different, but the overall social context is very similar. Which is why Madonna was compared to her so much. Post Marilyn, women were allowed to be more sexual and not be ashamed of it. Every generation seems to have someone who is ahead of the curve and with enough self determination, they are able to make themselves heard for all women. This is why Gloria Steinem called Marilyn the first true feminist. The sad thing is Marilyn was an emotional wreck which got to her in the end. But what she stood for out lasted the time. (And I hope no one reads this and says Marilyn was stupid/victim/slut, whatever. Because that is exactly what she was told in her time and she just kept plowing right past that)
And she STILL didn't change the minds of the vast majority of people back in the day like she wanted to. And the vast majority of the people already knew that she was and still is a typical liberal democrat sleaze who wanted and still wants America to be politically, sexually, and culturally like Europe.
My Mom called her out 20 years ago- While Madonna was running around poisoning everyone's mind and slutting around the world- my Mother was building her family, her empire, her legacy. She has a husband of 40 years, children, and grandchildren who love her and see her often. And most of all we all RESPECT her. She is revered like a Queen. Now where's Madonna? She has 2 or 3 creepy unhappy children who have no children. She's almost 70, alone, stripping on stage, addicted to sex, young boys, attention, and substance. You will thank me if you put this together. And you need to or you're going to end up miserable for life if you think people like Madonna are legends.
This is probably THE BEST interview Madonna has ever given on television in her career. I was quite impressive with her eloquent, genuine and logical response
@@beanstaIkjack I loved that Madonna called out these "conservatives" and deplorable rupblicans as well. They would not fund any sex education. Teenage births was at an all time high because nobody knew about condoms or birth control.
Gay is 5% of our population. 7 at most. Most people are not gay. Not even now after all that's been culturally pushed on people. It's fine to have her opinion, but it's also fine to not like, affirm, or accept gay sex as the norm. That doesn't mean you can hate gay people, but arguing on the morality of it all is permissible ONE WAY OR THE OTHER.

@@WBscorned Do you even hear yourself? That was the most ignorant argument, full of hypocrisy I've ever heard --- So Black population is 13.5%, Asians make up about 7% in the US -- Are they less American because they are minority? They are not "normal" because they aren't the majority? Is it "fine" to not accept them?? I question YOUR morality (as well as your intelligence) based on your statement --- And regarding your second point: Arguing on the "morality" based on what? The Bible? Have you even read the Bible?? Do you even realize that over 50% of STRAIGHT couple marriages in the US ends up in divorce and over 80% of them will remarry? The Bible clearly states that this is committing adultery which is same "sin" as homosexuality according to the Bible, That seems to be way bigger problem than 5% of (gay) population being able to marry --- yet I dont see people like you parading to ban divorce on the straight marriage -- Dont be a hypocrite -- The Bible also says EVERYONEs a sinner and let the one whose truly pure and innocent throw the first stone -- It also says "Thou shall not judge or you'd be the first one to be judged by God" --- So who gave you the moral compass to say which sins worse than the other?
She was such a beast. I imagine she was interrogated like this over and over again, it sure took strength of character to remain this determined throughout.

For those disrespecting the interviewer, he's playing a role. Madonna would not be giving these great answers if he wasn't provoking her with these questions. The reason why she doesn't get pissed off is that she recognises he's not being rude, he's not being personal and is just presenting Devil's Advocate arguments. He's actually respectful and non patronising by recognizing she has a tough enough skin to stick to the argument and not feel insulted. In fact the very last exchange was sincere; "Thank you very much Madonna, it was kind of you to talk to us", Madonna replied, "Thanks for listening to me."
Robert Jameson exactly! There’s an art to it and well versed celebrities know this. They also expect it, many interviewers ask the same questions give or take...so they also come prepared with canned answers. Attending interviews is a job basically, in and of itself it’s a publicity stunt, & they come along with a standard template. That said, Madonna broke the mold.
I love that! Such civility and she is so on point! Her words are so relevant even today. Why IS it that it is okay to see men kill each other and beat each other up but in 2019 people STILL feel uncomfortable when two men hold hands and profess their love for each other.
Ok let be clear, this was recording in the 90's and she totally owned the interview , Madonna is great. A strong woman who always have a mind of her own. There's only one queen, and that Madonna
John Bitter Fuck Fuck yes!!!!! Always and still love Madonna! She really held her own, with other wondering facts, and put that man on the spot when questioning her, even when he was trying to hide it(obvious)!!!! The man interviewer is a complete ASSHOLE, & he can go fuck himself completely, and reconsider a different career for himself! Because to me, he is not too good with this one in the first place😠😠😠😠😠😠
By the way, this is a GREAT enterview. Don't be an idiot, the enterviewer is not there to kiss no ones ass, he's there to make the questions, that can actually dig deep and turn that into a interesting thing. Lucky Madonna, she knows perfectly how to deal with it. Great of him. Great of her.
I agree. They were capable of disagreeing with one another, defending their positions and not being rude to each other. Its a veritable intellectual talk fest compared to every single interview you see today which is either people agreeing with each other or people shouting at each other. This interview is giving me nostalgia big time.
If most journalists and interviewer would report like that “no butt kissing “. sadly , it’s not that way anymore . Censorship is happening all the time today .
No question about that. I was attracted to her from the beginning. Fierce, fabulous and she presented the most assertive feminine energy the music industry and the culture had ever seen. Brava Madonna. And she resonated like no other. Boom. She is no victim. And yes Forest Sawyer was a good interviewer and his later interview with her just before she began filming Evita was awesome.

+E. Gonzales Yeah, something that Black female artists like Donna Summer and Vanity 6 DID FIRST but don't get credit for. Madonna just made it okay for OTHER White women to follow that same trend.
I agree that many other types of artists before her HAVE done the same but Madonna had pushed other things like equality for all and female (all races) the ability to challenge men in the entertainment work force in a time when the world was still not as open to the type of liberties younger female artists have now... And she still continues even at her age still pushing limits to help pave the way... A never ending battle... She had been inspired to continue... And I'm sure her inspirations to do so include the artists you have mentioned so yes I agree with you but Madonna is still pushing that battle for all right now in other aspects now and other topics as well... @lizzy prasad
@@bigvinamac it's not all black and white though people focus on that too much heck..even still live on stereotypes about what black and white are stereotypes that Madonna defied in her music throughout her career she doesn't see things in black and white like most people do
BTW Donna Summers was criticized by the gay community for her anti-gay views Madonna has been a gay advocate throughout her career, and she finally has been given award for it by GLAAD The Advocate for Change award she's only the second person to receive the award she's the first woman to receive the word she was also an AIDS activist throughout her career even though African Americans have been been a marginalized community, I find many of them to be bigots against homosexual people I also find them to be racially prejudiced too I am multiracial person myself
After she did "Justify" she went on to do Erotica, and the 'Sex' book. A lot of critics wrote her off and panned that cd. I was working in the record stores and the book and cd flew off the shelves. Every time they try to count Madonna out she just comes back stronger and stronger.
@PensiveCzar you missed the WHOLE point of Erotica. The album was SUPPOSED to be very raw. I worked IN the record stores when this was released. Every cd5 that came off "Erotica" was remixed to perfection. That was the point. The remixes served two purposes: To add to Madonna's cash flow and to hear slicker versions than what was on the album.
She sounds so intelligent and confident. And the interviewer (who a lot of people are bashing in the comments) is doing great! Nowadays people interviewing Madonna just kiss her ass and don't ask the difficult questions or play Devils advocate. She's a QUEEN. ❤️
Exactly, the only way to get some of those amazingly insightful answers is to challenge Madonna a little bit. And you could tell she absolutely loved speaking her mind her and giving her opinions to the country.
Totally agree! It’s the interviewers job to play devils advocate or ask the questions that represent the opposing view points. People don’t seem to get that. Otherwise you are just helping them promote a product. These types of thought provoking questions are what made people so interested in her, and Marilyn Monroe in her time, and many others.
I think the reason why the interviewer could interview Madonna like that is because she was not as big then and she was turned against by the whole society so he was on the side of society, of course he can have the guts to say those things to her.
My Mom called her out 20 years ago- While Madonna was running around poisoning everyone's mind and slutting around the world- my Mother was building her family, her empire, her legacy. I respect Madonna so damn much. I was 12 when this was going on, and I was dying to see and hear this track. I stayed up late to watch the premiere, and that was the ONLY time it was played. I never forgot it, and a few years later, it began to play late at night on other stations. I still think “Justify My Love” is Madonna’s greatest, most gorgeous-looking music video. It’s perfect. I am now 44 years old, and this song and video still makes me feel like it did the first time.
Prince was far more sexual at the time and didn't court as much controversy - it's because she is female - just goes to show the misogynistic society we live in
+Gayham Prince was more sexual than Madonna early 90's? I don't think so. Justify My Love & Erotica music video, SEX book-photos, Blond Ambition Tour & Girlie Show says it all.
Gina Sousa Branco in the context of when this was filmed in 1990 not the body of her work in the 1990's. You've clearly missed my point entirely. Madonna was ridiculed for the sexual nature of this video at the time, yet Prince was behaving just as bad in terms of his work and sexual image and didn't court as much controversy. Madonna has more or less said this herself.
Gayham those items I mentioned were in the first 3 years of the 90's: 1990 to 1993. I never saw any Prince work with him naked, or sexual fantasies or desires, or even openly talking about sadomasquism, lesbian & gay relations. Only Prince's Scandalous song has an erotic & sexual content in its lyrics
+Gina Sousa Branco Again you are missing my point! It isnt an argument about who was more sexual or who talked about it more. He was incredibly sexual at this time. He masturbated on stage with a guitar, was photographed naked hundreds of times, wrote a song about 'cream'...the list goes on. This was way before justify my love. It doesnt matter what the subjects were, they were all sexual in nature. My point is, is that because he was a man nobody bothered him or made such a fuss about it but as soon as Madonna did there was an outcry because she is a woman. If she was a man saying these things there would not have been such controversy.
She boldly exposed the hypocricy of the censorship....Very thoughtfully she expressed herself.Simply brilliant.Thats why she is living legend.💞 Lot of respect for her.
Censorship is necessary for children. Adults can view what they like, but irresponsible to think it was ok if 10 yr olds stumbled on it, like it was a sex ed class or something. I am nearly sure no child went to their parent trying to learn more about group sex and bondage. 🤢🤮 grooming, pedo behavior to act like that's normal.

They play less videos with all those shows but they have more channels. At least in Europe "Medellin" was played at MTV, MTV Music, MTV Dance and VH1 for almost 2 months.
This is probably one the best interviews she gave in the 90s. She's always been more evolved than us mere mortals. I cant stop loving her. "Why are we accepting this ignorance. Guess what? Parents are not doing their jobs."

Everything about this is perfect. Her answers and her whole additude. She speaks eloquently and says intelligent, progressive things. Madonna is an amazing role model for young women.
@@Micheleoneandonly that's the only point i disagree with, i made another comment about it. i think bdsm and such should only be shown at a specific time for a very clear reason
I am blown away by this interview. She's is smart, she has a message, she's poised, confident, and explains her perspective so well. The interviewer was respectful, engaged with her on real issues, asked questions that allowed her to showcase her intellect, and pays her the compliment of drawing her out so they could have an interesting conversation. I'm also blown away by how long this interview is. So refreshing in an age where artists get 2 minutes before the interviewer says, "and very quickly, can you tell us what is next for you? We only have about 30 seconds.... and thank you, we're going to have to stop there."
She's poised because that was the culture of the time! There was still a semblance of grace left. SHE is part of what WRECKED that entire thing we had going. The entire Christian identity of this country. Whether you believe or not, our Country was founded on Christian principles. (Do unto others as you'd have them do unto you, respect, decency- these are Christian ideas that were new to the world, a very cruel world). So the more we did THIS kind of Madonna, Lady Gaga shit the more we opened doors to fucking disasters like themselves. Disasters such as: Cardi B, Lil Xan, and DaBaby. Like pleeeeease put it together😫 our culture is fucked because of people like YOU mistaking poor behavior for fReEdOm. Like stoppppppppppp
And…”That’s all the time we have, we got to go and good night” Yeap, you don’t see this level of broadcasting interviews no more, public watching usually wants instant gratification.
I litteraly get really angry and frustrated that all women in pop music and even alt music don't pay hommage publicly and incessantly for this incredible woman who made everything before them. Madonna was versatile, she did dances, ballads, eroticc, otherwordly, philosophy, historic genre etc... and with courage. Being naked today is noy being courageous, in her time is was!!! Long live the Queen.
Hands down, the BEST interview. She has always been ahead of her time. This interview proofs that this topic is still relevant to this day. That's why I love Madonna.
Madonna is SO fascinating. Even though it is repeatedly said that she paved the way for other artists and now in the 2010's and 2020's we have open conversations to challenge the status quo on so many topics, very few artists actually dare to talk to them in their art and music, I feel like all the Taylors, Arianas, Beyoncés just want to look pretty and they don't really deal with conversations or topics like Madonna did. No one will.
Madonna has an edge like a ninja sword. Always sharp, always smart, always ready to answer any question that's thrown at her. I have enjoyed her music from the very beginning of her career. But she is a great speaker as well. I enjoy enormously listening to her speak as I have always enjoyed her music. She's so much more than a great musical artist. I'm glad I live in her time.
its too bad teens and kids dont know how much madonna has influenced the music game today. if it wasnt for her, female singers wouldn't be able to express their sexuality and push boundaries. britney, miley, rihanna and all them other sexual female popstars should thank her for paving the way for them!
What's amazing though is that she pushed the boundaries and even up until now, she still continues to do so. Almost all of the pop girls that came after her never really had the same impact as she did
How was she ahead of her time . Ahead of her time means she wasnt appreciated during her ' time' . Which she was . And she's still around so when do u think her time will come ?
@@daveyboy_ her ideas were ahead of time when she said them. This what she speaks here was way too advanced for that time but she pushed it to spotlight and made it a common place. She is even doing it now with the question of ageism which she is pushing especially past few years. That would be a common place in about 10 years
Wow, epic interview that shows what Madonna did and mean...today a lot of things that Madonna say are more or less normalized but at the time she was in front of a society who still thought like the interviewer shows: ultraconservative, with fear in front of nudity, sexuality etc...respect!
This is so funny, most artists now days don't even have to come out and defense their arts anymore, mostly anyway, wow people were really conservative back then, if we play "Anaconda" to this interviewer, he might have had a heart attack.
Yeah, exactly, artists today aren't grilled like this because they don't have to be anymore. Madonna took a great deal more heat than the miley's and Rihannas of today.
Always so unique with a focus on her work, clear and concise speech. Never been afraid to confront the interviewer (male / female), just watch her TV interviews since 1984.
*you can see where Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga got Alot of her style from... Madonna gets so much hate in terms of sexuality... She opened doors for all these singers*
I saw her in 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour and she was amazing, She still amazes me and she looks good here and I hope she comes out with another album you can love her or hate her she doesn't care! She is expressing herself and she has a point! I hope she comes out with another Album! I have all of her album!
Madonna did not pave the way for female artist of to day she bulldozed the way. Almost every female artist of today pays tribute to Madonna. And about 90% of them will admit it.
I don’t see anyone like her, never saw anyone like her. Compared to her, Michael Jackson was a borefest (and I LOVE his 80s stuff, but no one was or is competing Madonna).
I remember when this aired. It was the most watched episode then. It was so controversial. There was no other massive female entertainer at this mega mega stardom at that time. Today there’s all of these little minion female pop stars you can’t tell one from the next. And they’re all on the same field. They wouldn’t be able to do what they’re doing in the 80’s and 90’s. Madonna was the only one then which is difficult and without social media and the internet.
It was totally entertaining listening to Madonna put this guy in his place. One of the most intelligent, beautiful and talented women of all time. Madonna stands up for what she believes in and her fans love and respect her for it!
Hands down the most important, talented and articulate pop star that took a lot of heat for so many reasons including dealing with issues and topics that were deemed too controversial at that time and could have ended her career. She didn't care! Song after song, video after video, interview after interview, shows and tours and so on...Madonna remained true to not only her fans but more importantly...HERSELF!!!! Nobody can touch what Madonna has achieved and paved the way for artists forever in the industry! LEGEND.

I saw this LIVE! with my brother and cousin and still have this original ''Nightline'' recording on VHS. This was big news at the time. No one had pushed the sexual envelope at the time on MTV like Madonna. He asked the appropriate questions viewers wanted to know at this era of Madonna's career. Where were you??????? Today its no big deal. No one today can do anything to shock us anymore, like this artistic video Madonna did. I even bought the video single, still in my collection today.

There will only be one Madonna. She is so smart and there is no doubt she changed the vision of women in the world, not only in the music industry. Everyone should thank this woman for speaking out in this way, fighting against human hypocrisy. I think this is the reason why lots of gay people fell in love with her art. She is an example of freedom in so many ways. Thanks, Madonna.
