She’s sounds good because she’s not jumping around and dancing. And by good this is no where near as good as Oprah. She lost the vocal touch that summer god knows why - on top of it the band and lenny seem off key which is certainly off putting for anyone trying to sing

@@seanp7dc it’s not sound issues. The key of ROL is too high for her. Might have been ok for the studio but not live performance. She dropped the key for ROL performances after this. Shanti sounds amazing because it was comfortably in her range.

@@adamp3581yes after this she dropped it because she lost the vocals even tho I think she could’ve kept them going. Her Oprah performance of rol was perfect albeit a second take as she was nervous too

Correct! She burned her vocals too hard on the rehearsals, which were 1000 times better than the live version. But that’s Madonna! She is a perfectionist and I think she learned her lesson in not overdoing it so much. #Madonna #RayOfLight

I believe it was all the interviews she gave after the rehearsal that affected her voice - she was the most nominated in 1998 so everyone wanted interviews and there was anticipation of her performance

I think she gets nervous performing on TV. You can see her hands shaking during her 1991 Oscar performance. She complains even in the rehearsal she can't hear herself; that may have been another factor.

I feel like a combination of nerves + Lenny's guitar being too loud/sound issues. The first rehearsal of ROL, I agree, is miles better than the broadcast version. What a shame!

Well I think lenny and the band are off key with the original song which must be off putting if you’re trying to sing well. Furthermore it seems she lost the vocal touch that summer and I have no clue why. I would’ve helped if she ofc didn’t have sound issues and if there was more of an echo on her voice like on Oprah

@@unpopularopinion2594I don’t think it’s damaging as much as just really challenging, as it just rides the passagio between head and chest voices. All you’d need is some nerves, tension, or fatigue, or overcompensating for monitor/balance issues, and that delicate dance gets thrown all the way off… But the live performance feels like it had way too much vocoder going (malfunctioning? lol) and was breathless (nerves & tension?). The Oprah performance had cool effects but the MTV Awards one was bizarre. Would love to know what actually happened

I agree with you, the live version was so awful but I think it’s about being human. And the most important for those who support her for a long time: she SINGS when she wants and when she can, because it seems there have been some sound problems. She complains about not hearing herself. Possibly that happened during the live performance. That version is way better.

She uses sex because our society still has a stupid phobia against sex. She deserves even more respect for that ❤
