With 4' there is a funny story (allegedly). Week, when 4 minutes peaked at number 3 it has outsold both Usher's track and the 18th number one by The elusive chanteuse Mariah. So basically 4min should have peaked at number 1 but due to Billboard's chart rules (which also includes airplay gains) the song lost to Carey's "Body" even though it sold two times less than Madonna's track. 😉
The songs of Madonna that peaked at #2 in UK Chart Singles are: Crazy For You (blocked by Sister Sledge's Frankie), Holiday (blocked by her own Into The Groove), Borderline (blocked by Billy Ocean ' When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going), Live To Tell (blocked by Falco's Rock Me Amadeus), Hanky Panky (blocked by Partners In Kryme's Turtle Power), Justify My Love (blocked by Vanilla Ice' Ice Ice Baby), Crazy For You (riedited in 1991, blocked by Simpsons' Do The Bartman and The Clash' Should I Stay Or Should I Go), Ray Of Light (blocked by All Saints' Under The Bridge/Lady Marmalade), Beautiful Stranger (blocked by S Club 7's Bring It All Back), American Life (blocked by Room 5 feat. Oliver Cheatham' Make Luv), Hollywood (blocked by Beyoncé's Crazy In Love) Me Against The Music (blocked by Busted' Crashed The Wedding).
I have to say, I'm okay with most of the number 2 hits not hitting number 1 because it lost the top spot to great/good competition. One number 2 that I could say was robbed was Frozen.
As a long-time fan I was bitter for the longest time that back in 1998 the damn TITANIC soundtrack was #1 for months on the charts and prevented her Ray of Light album from hitting the #1 spot it rightfully deserved 😭 That album of ALL albums deserved to be #1!!! ❤️🩹
Marvin Morawski it always confused me as to why Madonna chose to release Into The Groove as a single in the UK, but not the US. In the UK Into The Groove charted at number 1, but in the US she chose to release the single Angel instead. Angel is also a great Madonna track, but if she released Into The Groove as a single here in the US, she would have no doubt had a number 1 hit.
To be honest with you, I wasn't really keen on her early stuff. Sorry. Frozen, and secret I do love for spiritual and emotional reasons. Madge, has simply got better and better as the years have gone bye.
It’s painful to watch! 1. I don’t know the songs that blocked her from No.1 and 2. I hate those songs! America always had strange charts! Her songs charted at No.1 in Europe but not in the USA! Hung Up? WTF? She could have had over 20 No.1 singles in the Billboard TOP 200 but no, they bought one hit wonders! Ridiculous!
I think there is a mistake. "Cherish" spent only two weeks and not four weeks at No. 2. They were the weeks of the 7th and 14th October, 1989. Thanks for the video. There is a feeling I've always had. I feel Billboard hasn't treated Madonna fairly. It makes no sense how some of Madonna's songs were the biggest climbers on The Hot 100 for weeks and then the week they're expected to jump to No 1, they waited on the runner-up position they stayed the week before eventually failing to make it to the top and being surpassed by songs that Madonna's songs surpassed in the previous weeks. This has happened since her first top-5 hit. "Lucky Star" climbed some 15 positions each week and in 7 weeks it reached top 10. Then it stopped at 4, failed to advance to No 1 and was surpassed by Billy Ocean's "Caribbean Queen (No More Love On The Run)" which "Lucky Star" had surpassed weeks before. "True Blue", "La Isla Bonita", "Causing A Commotion" and "Express Yourself" are some other good examples.
A humble suggestion to Madonna: Album name: ‘Zephyr in the Sky’ An appeal by the fans to release a compilation of 20 masterpieces from Madonna’s catalogue personifying every emotion we have been through in this most dark age. And as we steer back to humanity and life. Search for the future. A journey to the light, there is always a ray of hope and then the brilliant radiance of life. Emotions and these songs clutch in perpetuity, the journey we continue. Ray of Light The deliverance of hope. The rhythm of life never seizes. There will always be that zephyr in the sky each night. Embrace it we can. Masterpiece Preservation of our most precious in peril. Our children, our people. Our kind. Caress them, protect them, enliven them. Crazy Souls without direction. Souls succumbing to the anarchy. Moments of lapse and dissolution of reason. There is always a method in any madness. Miles Away Separation - a reality, distancing in the new remote ecosystem - a way of life. Now from a far. Life anew. 4 Minutes There were heroes. And there were those who saved the world, those who ultimately will and those who arrogantly don’t. We can all be heroes, for even more than a day. Borderline Barriers, walls, borders can neither prevent the triumphant human, nor conquer the invisible enemy. Humanity on the borderline of distraught. Never destroyed. Die Another Day Death can never be normalized. Not one, not a million. Fight. Death will come, in victory there will ultimately be death. But another day, its not our time to go. You’ll See Strength is personal, strength is contagion, strength prevails, strength is now our constant. You’ll see. La Isla Bonita My dreams are always my own and even I don’t control them. There will be sun again, there will be celebration again, we will hold hands again -into that beautiful sunset. Ghost Town The cradles of our civilization - devoid of voices, people, laughter, love. Ghostly in silence, our great cities shall live again - thrive they shall. Like a Prayer God. Life is a mystery, everyone must stand alone. You will hear the voice and I always hear you call my name. Forgive me. Pray. Joan of Arc You’re only human. Our weakness it can never be. A Joan in us all. New awakenings. Sorry Not so many need to be sorry. But sorry are those who remain bigoted in normalizing death and cheating life. They must be sorry. Usher in the preservers. Change. Another Suitcase in Another Hall In the anarchy of this world, don’t lose yourself. ‘I’ never goes out of fashion. You are not another brick in the wall. Dress You Up Making love, satiated the nights of darkness, all over, all over my body, mind and soul. The adrenaline of sex, of lust, of expressing it still. Vogue At night we lock the door when no one else can see. There was a time with my people around me. I’m good with me for now. I n deed to dance, you can too. Human Nature Express yourself don’t repress yourself. Humans we are humane but he not always is. The Emperors of yore and now shall not be remembered - not those who lacked humanity and mocked death. I rise I am talking about a revolution. A revolution of love. Of compassion. Of kindness. Our time is now and we shall not let the autumn leaves fall in vain. All rise and realize your own renaissance - for you and for the world. I’ll Remember I’ll remember the love. I’ll remember the love you gave me. Now that we’re standing on our own - we shall walk again together, we shall celebrate again together. Another circus, another show. Music Its about the music. Its always been about the music. Music helped me breathe this, live this, survive this. Music makes the people come together - yeah. In gratitude, Madonna.
The only one that made sense it Bad by Michael Jackson (since it belongs there) but I'm sure the other songs that we're good number 1 hits. But Express Yourself needed to be no.1.
Boyz II Men's End of the Road and All 4 One I swear spent 13 and 11 weeks at No.1. That is the time when I give up on Billboard chart. There is practically zero movement. Mariah has many great No.1, but Touch My Body is a joke.
It's funny, some of her greatest hits never made it to number one in the US - Holiday, Material Girl, La Isla Bonita, Express Yourself, Don't Cry for me Argentina, Ray of Light, Hung up... the list goes on. With those mega hits(which all also have staying power), she would have more number ones than The Beatles.
All of these songs that blocked Madonna from reaching number 1 make sense, except for All My Life by K-Ci & Jojo. That song is one of the most annoyingly repetitive and monotonous songs ever!

@Marvin Morawski alleged chart manipulation by Mariah and her executives. It's all over the internet. Even LA Reid of Mariah's team were threatened when Madonna released her Hard Candy while they have their EMC2
