I loved life in the artistic, inclusive and hugely creative New York City of the 1980s and 1990s. But I was a Madonna hater. Nearly 35 years later I'm looking at this performance, and realizing that it is sheer genius, and that it totally stands the test of time. It would dominate any "diva"'s performance today. By a mile. Bravo, Madonna, dancers, and choreographer! Phenomenal!

So many pop girls are writing their own music these days, something practically unheard of in 1999. That alone should give you hope for pop music's immediate future. You should listen to more than an artist's singles and watch at least a couple longer interviews before you decide they're some ill omen of pop music's future.

I remember the very first time I saw a Madonna video. It was 1983 and the song was Borderline (of course)! It got my attention instantly and I knew this girl was going to be a huge hit. I had the same experience with Adele. I've detected other stars in the making, but Adele and Madonna are the two biggest that I can remember. Magical!

I have nothing but the deepest affection and love and admiration for Madonna. I am 33 years old and it is only now, after reading an article, that I realize, what a great form of art her work is. It touches me like no other music, it is the dedication, the perfection of the message of the songs and their visualization. No other musician does what she does, she stands in line with the great classical artists like Michelangelo. This dedication to express herself produces pieces, that can stand alone like a painting, with a deeper meaning. -- It is a pity, that John Lennon couldn`t see her, I think he would have been enthusiastic. Her approach resembles Lennon`s, only that she is much more sucessful at reaching her aim, for various reasons. And no wonder McCartney didn`t like her, he was never an artist like Lennon, just a musician.

Were the fans pre-recorded? The sync would be incredibly hard to pull off. All you would need to do is mic the thing properly. You can hide quite a lot in those corsets ;) I was hearing voices come in and out of double tracking in a really interesting way. I suspect that when Madonna said “pose” that was live though much of it was synced. This performance is probably the best thing that Madonna ever did and the audio production is a fascinating part of it.

I'm a historian specializing in the 18th c. and I talk about this all the time! They're not perfect, of course, but specifically Madonna herself? Damn-- the neckline is perfect, size/proportion of the panniers are great, the style of the gown she's wearing is based off of a very specific midcentury French style, and you can tell she's wearing stays/undergarments that give her the proper shape. So much respect for artistic expression when it's obviously backed up by research

The best thing is taking a popular song (and video for the 90s) at an awards show to create an original performance with original costuming and semi reminiscent choreography of the music video amd make a one of a kind performance. This wasn't recreated. This was original. And that is what makes Madonna part an icon in the last 40 years of music, video, dance, and persona.

It’s surprisingly historically accurate and just beautiful. I love the robes anglaises and the powdered wigs. The royal courts of the late 1700s were extremely sexually charged and playful so this isn’t too far off from the way they’d have acted! It’s so fun and you can tell she really loves her dancers. While she was the main performer, obviously, she let each dancer have moments to shine. It’s very unique and it makes me heart smile.

It was at this pivotal moment when I was 12 years old in 1990 that I knew without a shadow of a doubt that I was gay! Yassssssssssssssss dahling! Even now in my 40's, I still come back and watch this video. Some things on the internet I can't stand, but this piece of art defines not only peak tv, but it defines a generation. Only a couple, like Michael Jackson and Madonna were getting their videos played in primetime. This is EVERYTHING! Back in the day, the MTV Video Music Awards were MUST SEE TV!
