Boys, this is the night Madonna became the queen of pop. The concept is a show put on by a house at the ballroom, Marie Antoinette realness. Madonna is the mother of the house. Vogue was inspired and from the ballrooms. That's why it wasn't live but lip-synced because it was a new trend at the ballrooms back then ( now we have lip-sync for your life ). This was right after her three months long controversial and hugely successful Blond Ambition Tour - the best tour of the 90's that changed the concept of concerts that is still being followed as a blueprint. Vogue was the most successful single of 1990, globally. Everyone was waiting for this performance that night and it was the closer. Costumes are from Dangerous Liaisons that won the best costume for Oscar. Just today, a poll, done by Grammy's for Pride 2021, Vogue was voted best lgbtq+ anthem. Overall, this night, this performance is iconic in so many layers. Great reaction as always, thanks.

I think we didn't understand then all the meaning this performance has. She took the ball room actual members to the mainstream stage and presented them as privileged members of society. Was a huge statement from someone who also came from nowhere, we're here, we're talented, we deserve the stage.

@@ginasousabranco5637 yes, I was alive and a fan back then too. With True Blue and WTG Tour, she was the one and only, everywhere you looked there was Madonna. But with at first Like A Prayer, then Vogue, then Blond Ambitions and by the time this performance came, she was so high at the top that she felt like out of this world. Her career is full of great achievements but this moment was her Mt. Everest and the moment she became the queen of pop. Until Blond Ambition, she was the most successful female artist, even though many overlooked her artistry. So I hope I made sense of my statement.

Back in the late 80’s, early 90’s, The VMA’s were a must watch awards show, especially since MTV actually played videos at the time. I always got together with a group of friends to watch the awards each year. This performance went down as one of the best EVER in VMA history.

Victorian derives from British Queen Victoria's reign in the mid to late XIX century. This is late XVIII century, french Ancien Regime style. I've red recently that Glenn Close herself lent her the costume because she kept it after filming Dangerous Liaisons (1988).

I love watching you guys and I got a fresh one today as I'm still catching up with all your older ones. That is one of the most iconic MTV performances ever and yes, back in the day MTV performances were definitely longer and also everyone was trying to outdo everyone else but no one could compare to the Queen! If I remember, BACK IN THE DAY, when I was 14 watching this, MTV Music Awards might have been from 7-10P CST and there were a lot less commercials and BS back then. This is still my Favorite Madonna performance. My gay teen self went crazy! Thank you for covering it!!

I don't think anyone today can fully appreciate the audacity and brilliance of this performance at the time - the perfection, the costumes, and madness. She could have played it safe and done a typical dance routine - yet she served us this and jaws dropped.

It’s got that Victorian vibe because that was considered to be “high class” & the ballroom clubs would imitate famous personalities with grandiose attitudes & the underground ballroom dance was all about posing wearing extravagant clothing as extravagant as it could be for the underground gay community. So, the concept is very spot on. Very presentational. Meanwhile, she’s also sending the message of racism & sexual orientation - Madonna in ‘Truth or Dare’ busted, and I mean BUSTED, that iron wall & it shattered into a million pieces. Madonna, as always, has dealt with controversial issues. No other artist has ever done that.

The movement everyone did in unison towards the end of the performance, where you guys said it looked like they were on a conveyor belt, flamingos do a mating dance in the wild that is identical. I believe it could be where they got the inspiration to do that.

Guys this was not Victorian style. Victorian is 1860-1900. This was French neoclassical, Marie Antoinette inspired, form the late 1700s.

9:00 Madonna was nominated for nine awards at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards. Her video for "Vogue" was the most nominated video of 1990. Madonna won three awards that night, for Best Direction, Editing and Cinematography. For the second year in a row, Madonna was one of the night's biggest winners, taking home three technical awards, while Sinéad O'Connor was the other most rewarded artist of 1990, also winning three Moonmen including Video of the Year. Madonna has won 20 VMAs from a total of 68 nominations.

This performance paid tribute to one of the more popular films of the year, Dangerous Liaisons, with Glenn Close playing the master manipulatrix of the French court scene. The romantic interest in the film was none other than Keanu Reeves, before he had any of his main breakout starring roles. Well worth a watch... or even a reaction. ;)

You mention the costumes are an interesting concept for the song. A bit of an explanation behind this; the song and video for Vogue is about the New York ballroom culture of the 80's. It was an opportunity for lgbtq people of color, particularly gay and trans people to dress up as high society or imitate success that was unobtainable to them because of their skin color and/or gender identity. So to represent this very high society history period for this song is 100% representative of the ballroom culture in NY and they way they would dress.
