Right! Also Voguing was featured in The Documentary Paris Is Burning (1987) that focused on the lives of a Group of African American/Latin LGBT Folks who do "Balls" which are like competitions and Voguing is the Highlight. Willie Ninja who was a Champion Voguer was also in Malcolm McLaren's Video as well. Sadly he died of AIDS related illness. If he had lived he would have been a brilliant celebutante or a judge on America's Next Top Model.
The names she used were actors/actresses of classic movies. Icons/legends of the golden age of cinema. But I think Dimaggio could be Joe Dimaggio, baseball player once married to Marilyn Monroe.
@@matthewdrake4385 I think he means that he wasn't handsome or a fashion icon. At the time he was considered handsome, but sports figures are always considered to be celebrities, not always due to looks.
The song that made me a Madonna fan! Madonna, not surprisingly another of my Dad’s favourite artists. I’m beginning to realise that my Mum and Dad have very different tastes in music. ❤️

Voguing took its name from Vogue magazine. That style of dancing mimicked the awkward poses made by models in Vogue magazine and on the runway at fashion shows. Vogue dancers were, in essence, pretending they were glamourous models. If you want to delve into her more controversial material try 'Justify My Love' and 'Erotica'.
Madonna actually started as a dancer before signing her recording contract. The Vogue dance started in gay clubs in the mid to late 80s, this song came out in 1990. Named after the magazine, you would ‘strike a pose’ like you were being photographed for Vogue. There’s a tv show called Pose which is set in this era too. You have to bear in mind how the world was back then, AIDS was killing mostly gay men at the time. A lot of Madonna’s friends were dancers and that’s where the song comes from. The opening line is ‘look around, all you see is pain and heartbreak’ *edited to add* David Fincher directed this video, he also directed movies Se7en, Gone Girl, Fight Club and many others.
Jay- I really think you should listen to her song “Live to tell.” I’ve heard it had to do with the love of her life (she said it) Sean Penn- Also “Crazy for you.” Sexy, beautiful ballad- I think you’d like those of hers much better- 😉. 🧡💜✌️✨
I love his version of what he thought it was. He is adorable but he makes this ole school grandma proud he can appreciate good music! Tons of love & mad respect from The Boogie Down Bronx!
Vogue was THE SONG in 1990. Btw Madonna is a professional dancer. Please watch either Express Yourself Live Blonde Ambition Tour or Keep It Together also live from Blonde Ambition 1990.
It actually was a dance movement out of the black culture of the twenties, thirties and forties. It was taken up by my gay community when Madonna gave it to us. Rediscovery of culture is an amazing thing. Canadian Grandma Lori.C.
It makes no difference if your black or white If your a boy or a girl If the music's pumpin' it will give you new life You're a superstar Yes that's what you are you know it Come on Vogue Vogue
Hi there Jay can you please check out Madonna's Holiday and then check out Holiday Rap by Miker G coz this was what we were dancing to in the clubs back then.
Definitely!!! Some of the names were reversed like “Harlow Jean” should actually be Jean Harlow. Madonna seemed to go through phases, and this was one of my very favorites of her songs.
Voguing is a style of dance started in the Latino & Black gay community of Harlem in the 80's. Its done in very expressive poses like that of early ballroom dance but modernized. You are correct J, the fashion magazine was the inspiration for it.
This is a link to a documentary called “Strike A Pose”. It tells the story of the young group of guys who were discovered by Madonna & became her back up dancers. It’s a great show ✌️❤️🌟 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S9SpTeKwIXA.html
@Jambalaya Rules I think you’re commenting on the wrong video. We’re a loving group of people who enjoy watching Jays reaction videos. It’s a politics free zone. Thanks ✌️
The people featured in the spoken-word break were: Greta Garbo, actress; Marilyn Monroe, actress; Marlene Dietrich, actress; Joe DiMaggio, baseball player; Marlon Brando, actor; James Dean, actor; Grace Kelly, actress and later Princess Grace of Monaco; Jean Harlow, actress; Gene Kelly, actor and dancer; Fred Astaire, actor and dancer; Ginger Rogers, actress and dancer; Rita Hayworth, actress; Lauren Bacall, actress; Katherine Hepburn, actress; Lana Turner, actress; and Bette Davis, actress. All of these people are considered style icons of the 30s and 40s and 50s. A few of them were still alive when this song was released. Lauren Bacall was the last one to pass away in 2014.
Siansonea: Thank You, for taking the time to set down this comprehensive listing! 🤗 🤗 R.I.P. . . . Bogie's sweetheart, Lauren Bacall . . . Now, that was a Cool, Suave Couple!
@@Mercutia she came from a background of dance since she was born. Her dad taught her at a very young age. Her grandfather had a world famous school of dance in Spain. He was renowned for the dance style of bolero. So you can see why Fred Astaire loved her....and her drop dead gorgeous beauty was a plus lol!
I never realized she was saying "Lauren, Katherine, Lana too" until I read your listing! I'm surprised Madonna mentions Lana Turner - she was such a self-absorbed bitch in her old age. I remember watching her last few TV interviews in the 80s and she was always so snobby and rude.
Express yourself is another banger. Borderline is an oldie but a goodie. Hell, all Madonna stuff is good. lol You can't lose when you react to anything. Live to tell is my all time favorite ballad by her.
I do it every time I watch or hear this! If I’m sitting (like now), it’s just my arms...but if I’m standing, I go into full Vogue mode and let my body “moovvee to the music” 🎶 😁
Gahhhh she’s so beautiful. I was 10 when this came out in 1990. I wanted to be her. So risqué at the time. I loved her. You must check out her MTV Music Awards performance of this!!!
If you’re going to do Madonna, please start by doing her classic songs from the 80s when she became a star like “Holiday” “Borderline” “Lucky Star” “Into the Groove”
haha this is the list I just gave him, then came to the comments. Looks like we are on the same page. Madonna is and was always a dancer first and foremost! The singing came secondary. She was always evolving. I loved the way she just did what she wanted! She was asked by dick clark (the host of the tv show American Bandstand...) What she wanted to accomplish and she said that she "wanted to rule the world." She did in the music world AND beyond! Please do RAY OF LIGHT FROZEN those two are great and MUSIC is pretty good too! Take Care! Thanks for the reaction vid! ✌❤🎶😁
Madonna is a great dancer and songwriter, AND her voice does play a huge part to bring the magic needed in her songs. Someone like Whitney Houston could never sing a haunting ballad like "Live to Tell" the way it should have been done. And also, this is clearly not a case of someone like Paula Abdul where the vocal talent is almost non-existent (American Idol is an embarrassment) and it's 99% about the dancing. Madonna is unique. You cannot put her in a box.
Madonna was a master of evolution. This is, imho, her best music video and one of the best music videos ever made. Beautifully shot, energetic, and just feel good music. Great choice. Thanks for sharing! I suggest True Blue, Live to Tell, Papa Don't Preach, Material Girl.
I’m probably on my own but it’s the first Madonna song I really liked. I’m 75 years old so maybe that explains it! I did know all the people she named in the song.
Out of all of Madonna's hits, and she has a ton, True Blue has always been my favorite. It tends to falls through the cracks with all of her bigger hits. I hope one day you can listen to it. I think you'll dig it. Thanks for the reaction, and I hope you do more of her in the future.
That girl can sing & YES..... DANCE!!! Gotta giv 'er that! Please check out her slower ones; they're GREAT. "This Use To Be My Playground", "Crazy For You", "RAIN", "Live To Tell", "Papa Don't Preach", "Cherish" & "Who's That Girl", just to name a few. Lol... ALL of those songs, are PERFECT on the official music videos. Bring 'er back soon... (smiles)
some of her more emotional songs i liked were "Live to Tell" "This used to be my playground" "I'll remember" "Cherish" and then more lighter songs like "Lucky Star" "Borderline" "Angel" "Dress y ou up" "La Isla bonita" "Who's that girl"
Just cannot go wrong with her music, she's like Led Zeppelin..did she ever make any bad music?? Nope..."Justify My Love" very provocative.."Tell Me", great song..great video
FINALLY! Thanks! But you must do a live performance. She is the greatest live performer who has ever lived. I'm shocked you don't know how great a dancer she is. Start with Fever live from the Girlie Show or Express Yourself live from the Blond Ambition tour. You will NOT be disappointed. You haven't even scratched the tip of the iceberg on this woman's career and abilities.
I think the reason why Madonna wasn't very well liked was because her music got overplayed and what's fun at first, can grow tiring after awhile. But as overplayed as she was, she had talent and creativity
This song had everyone on the dance floor...and if you were extra enough, you were trying to do that posing kwap too. 😁 I was not that extra but I sure did dance my butt off to this. I cannot believe I'm so old that you're not even familiar with the famous actors and actresses she lists. Some of them could have been on the cover of vogue, not sure...but those are all very famous people..at least back in "my day." 😳
@@ruthanncornelia2452 Nothing wrong w/that! I come FROM POOR, so I see EVERYONE "as equal", even if they THINK they're better than others, they're not. All in HOW one was brought up, most times, will depict how we think. 'Cause at the end of the day, WE ARE THE SAME. So, KUDOS to Madonna... 👍
The old film stars referenced had class and dressed beautifully. Watch any movies that featured these actors and you'll see how amazing they were. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movies were my favorites.
That's what I love about Madonna, she does love to mix it up, this is in the 90's Jay. When this came on at a party etc everyone was trying to do the vogue dance.
Vogue was also the dance they were doing. It was basically striking different poses. Great reaction! More Madonna! Papa don’t preach is great, she has so many good ones you can’t hardly go wrong.
