Really my eyes welled up while watching this.I am from Madurai....N....number of times would have tasted this..That shop's signature dish .. As said you,you can polish off one big quantity of rice with just one pottalam..even milagu chevu prepared by them is very famous

Sir, you are correct the masala potalam is tasty because of the mantara elai (leaf) , in my younger age we use get tiffin in the bhagavati villas hotel, opposite to Chengalpattu medical college hospital in GST road, alagesen Nagar. we get the tiffin packed in the manthara elai , when the tiffin potalam opened in our house the aroma of the food was hilighted after your words in the program i think the mantara elai (leaf) makes any dishes packed with that leaf gets the aroma.

Incredibly Amazing! Was born in madurai and my parents are from madurai.. My Amma used to tell me stories of this Uralakezangu potlam and she would make it at home for us... This is one of my favorite and yes love for madurai tops it all.. Fantastic video.. Brings back Beautiful memories
Missed this so much presently in London. But now will try it here. So much joy derived from Nagapattnams pottalams and karaa sev till i was 20 yrs old in Madurai. Thanks Rakesh. BTW i love the way you say madura in tamil like a madura-kaaran. One more food stall just few blocks from nagapattnam in madurai is Gopu Iyengar whose Vellai appam, Kathirikkai bajji, Paccha mulagaai chutney and patnam bakkoda are unique and authentic.
Its customary for madurai vaasus to do vellai appam after ganga snaanam on diwali. Had it yesterday as my mum is in London . Her recipe is "Gobu iyengar proportion 1 raw rice and 1 ulundhu previous day night grind panni salt potty kalandhu vaikkanam morning inji pachaimilagai karuveppilai jeera gam milaegi potty porithu edukkanum My m.in-law is an authority in this"

They have their own masala podi to add also which gives it unique taste ..Only in marriages we used have variety foods in those days .. so these kind of shops serve the poor people tastes with moderate pricing also ..
Further down keelavani moolai veedhi . Good old shop before pudhu mandapam entrance... My grandmother's house road , it has been there even before 1965 or so..😂

Madam that is nothing but the saapatu illai where the leaves are made out of mandara leaves something resembles like teak leaves or badam tree leaves May be you remember sometimes it's served in marriages instead of banana leaf.
I have ocd .. and brother when u dumped the onions in and left the remaining in the bowl .. i was curling up here .. and also, using a wet spoon to get mustard seeds .. are you kidding me !! But love your work !!
Thambi Madurai chinna oooraa? We cannot measure it by the size and call it "chinna oor". Also you should call it out from "Nagapatnam Alva Kadai" in chithirai veedhi. There was another shopt similar to this who is just famous for their inji pankoda which was closed as there was no one to take care from the family.
