Shame that the sound mixing was off here… and its their own act for God’s sake!! So so so mad that they sabotaged her!! Her vocals are flawless if you listen closely!! 🥹🥹🤬🤬
Education standards are declining, university fees have gone up, cost of living is increasing, unemployment is through the roof and the brain drain is rampant as educated brits leave the country in droves. anyone who has been anywhere in England outside of London will understand! I left that godforsaken country and hope never to go back!
Your comment makes me think of the "Backwards" universe in Red Dwarf, where everyone speaks in Bulgarian and at the end, there are unforeseen consequences when cat heads off into the bushes and the other two say "Someone should stop him".....How exactly would ESC manifest itself? Perhaps where a song with unintelligible lyrics and disassociated staging wins? I think you'll find we're there already.......
I completely understand why the BBC didn’t want to win this year as it would mean spending millions to host again, but the fact that the UK has one of the worlds biggest music industries and does this badly so often in Eurovision is a disgrace. We’re not asking to win every year, we just want a song that we can be proud of and entries that consistently finish on the left-hand side of the scoreboard.
Well Eurovision is a for-profit event. So even if they would spend millions on hosting, they'd definitely earn it back immediately, and even in the later years due to increased tourism.
The applause and cheers that went on for at least a minute after the song ended, making it hard for the presenters to cut in, was such a beautiful Eurovision moment.
She seems like such a nice girl, the concept and staging was good, but something obviously went wrong sound wise. She didn't deserve all the backlash, it's just ESC, it's supposed to be fun, not a platform for spreading negativity.
Mae always said that they asked her if she wanted to do Eurovision and they were literally like we need a yes or a no now. Maybe they didn't put too much thought into this year. I know in Sweden for example their songs are written specifically for the song contest and they always write solo or collab with an established artist. Seems to have done the Swedes no harm so maybe something similar is needed in the UK rather than just finding a song and hoping it's Eurovision friendly. Surely we all see that Eurovision is a thing unto itself and what may work in the wider world won't necessarily work at eurovision
Her soft vocals sounded fine in the radio version of the song, but she should have adapted her vocals for the Eurovision show. The vocals weren't powerful enough for a live performance.
I really liked the song when it was realesed, but I have to admit that Mae has more to work on to perform on a stage of this magnitude, which of course makes sense. You can see that she has the basics and the song was really good, I wish her only success in the future and I'm sure she will improve a lot!
funfact: the reason the live sounds worse is because she was extremely nervous.. which she stated herself "Made her do worse" {quieter voice, weaker voice}
As soon as I heard this live I just knew we’d have another James Newman flop on our hands. If you compare this to the likes of Israel for example and how much stronger their vocals and performance was in comparison to the UK, I’m really not surprised where we ended up. And then Sam Ryder comes out in the interval and shows EVERYONE up just to add to it.
She was so low energy in this live final even the dancers were showing her up! Regardless, it was generic pop trash. Cant be coming with this forgettable dirge after Sam Ryder showed what it takes to get into top 3 with effortless charm and raw talent and a bit of class and showmanship.
Mae is a woman that says that she hates the Britain. She is a traitor. Now she is applying for a German passport to live in Spain, hope that this witch never comes back.
She has the worst voice. An absolute clownshow of a so-called vocalist. Off-key, weak, out of tune, unable to handle the end of phrases in particular. unable to project her voice. If she'd had to compete for it, she'd have been bottom-ranked and ejected in the semis. Instead we got to listen to her absolute pisstake of a performance alongside powerhouse young singers like Alessandra, who btw also has ten times the charisma of 'Mae'. Every single other singer in the whole event was a vastly superior vocalist.
This song is such a banger. It’s a shame her vocals just couldn’t carry it on the night. They should have done a Blanka and really pumped the backing vocals. That da da da da dai dai bit should have been blasted at full volume!
@@jhorrorfan2116she should have dosed up on vitamins then! I bet she didn’t. She probably sang bad on purpose as the UK doesn’t want to host the Eurovision again.
The craziest audience i’ve ever seen . It’s overwhelming to see how they’re cheering for Mae after her performance! Love this song , even it’s not her best performance ❤️🔥

Mae wrote a very catchy pop song that works on the radio, you can't fault that, but her vocals were just not on point enough on the night, especially compared to some of the other contestants. She wasn't loud enough/strong enough. Her vocals got lost in the backing track. Well done Mae, you tried your best I'm sure. It's easy to just sit at home and slag it off. I agree, everything is over-produced now so when it comes to going back to basics on stage, artists are out of their comfort zone as it can’t be tweaked by a producer when it’s live.
man, I and my family got really excited when this song was announced our entry. it's honestly a bop! (even if I prefer my eurovision a bit more... out there.) but then seeing the preview for the live version during the semis, I don't think I've been filled with dread quite so fast by a song. it's a real shame they didn't manage to iron out the bugs in the performance. even though she has some moments to shine, poor mae sounds breathy and wobbly in a way that signals either inability to handle live performances (which seems at odds with what I've heard about other live stuff she's done?) or a nasty illness. plus the sound technicians have done her NO favours, with levels all over the place and a mic that only seems to pick her up half the time. just all in all such a waste of potential. but ah well, at least we can commiserate with our lifelong bottom-of-the-board buddies germany.
I think she was advised to rest her voice last week but she was still giving interviews, so I don't think that helped. The sound definitely wasn't right. You can hear the room at one point, and she's drowned out by the music. She seems cool and I really like the song though.
Pretty much what I was thinking. Thought it had potential when I first heard it, then saw the ghastly semi final performance. Not sure how they can get the sound so wrong. And what's with the cheesy dancers?

People are oblivious to how bad their lives really are. They have a medieval system (their government) where important government posts are only open to the elite - who are lazy and illiterate. They have one of the most politically ignorant populations on the planet, followed by an equally illiterate Royal family. I remember talking to a 'so called educated' English guy once who said Christopher Columbus was American. English generally eat badly and live badly. Opening a bottle of wine for dinner - whilst normal in rest of Europe - was considered a treat not long ago (oh dear! ).

On the radio was a studio recording. Live performance is a different beast - but the whole setup was also dogshit, bad sound mixing, vocals too quiet, music too loud, couldn't hear most of the lyrics.
the vocals were kind of off but i loved the staging a lot and how hyped the audience was!! she also seems like such a fun person to be around, love from switzerland 🇨🇭♥️🇬🇧
Oh, absolutely. The song and the video on itself = flawless. It made me have such high hopes for this. But her stage presence and set up was giving Blackpool Karaoke Night.
There's some questions to be asked here. The Vocal mixing is so off compared to other entries. Mae wasn't perfect but it could have been put together a lot better. I absolutely adore this entry and Mae is amazing!
I don't think it's the voice, it's the staging, dancing etc. Honestly this could have been alot better aesthetically. It's something that UK needs to work on. Other than last year I can't think of a time UK has had iconic staging in recent history.
I am Italian and i like a lot this song in english, unfortunately her voice is very low.. we needed a higher and ringing tone of voice, too bad, also because she has a beautiful presence!

@@peterjones8335 They were actually only 1 of 2 countries that gave the UK points in the televoting. So despite having arguably the worst song, they did give us some sympathy points.
Hi, senior musical analyst here /s There's a few things to note about this song. Firstly for the song itself, it's perfectly fine for a song that would play on the radio, but in Eurovision, you want to put your best foot forward, and do something unique and special. This just sounds like every generic modern pop song and getting back at my ex song. It's not special, and it doesn't stand out in any way. It also doesn't have a particularly memorable hook or melody like something like Queen of Kings had. It's a perfectly fine song, just not Eurovision material. Mae's singing is...bad. Her voice just doesn't sound good. It's very bland compared to some of the powerful vocals that other countries had, and it's not particularly pleasing to hear either. Also, most British artists when singing will either put on an American accent, or maintain a British accent, but Mae appears to be doing neither and both at the same time, and the end result is just confusing. The visuals were basically a circle jerk for Mae, rather than attempting to be an interesting or powerful spectacle. They reeked of corporatised pop culture and came across as very narcissistic. The performance was generally not super interesting either, and Mae herself really didn't do anything interesting in her performance, unlike other songs like Unicorn. That breakdown was one of the cringiest things I've ever heard. Nothing else to say about that. Overall, it's baffling how this song was the one that was picked for Eurovision in the first place, and Mae's performance of the song didn't do it any favours. I wouldn't be surprised if the only reason Mae was picked was because of her appearance in Grace Kelly or something, because I genuinely struggle to find a compelling reason why this person and this song were picked to represent the UK in Eurovision.
You mentioned that her voice didn't sound good (and I don't disagree) but I noticed this with a lot of the acts tonight. I got the impression that maybe the monitoring was not up to par as it seemed like a lot of artists were not singing that well. If it was just one or two you could put it down to nerves, but when it was so many, it seems like a technical problem to me.
I'm surprised you don't mention the fact that she's a "head singer" rather than a "chest" singer, at least on this performance. Maybe nerves? It's strange why they would have chosen her *if* she really can't sing "from the chest". It was a heck of a risk (and it didn't pay off: typical BBC arrogance?)
Looks like the actual singer representing the UK never showed up, so they had to pluck someone from the local pub already 7 pints in and said "do your best".
The bar I was in (not in the UK) went crazy when this song came on. She’s definitely a fan favorite but they really should have helped her out with backing vocals, she’s obviously been struggling performing this live. Some training with breath control would be good for her.
If she requires training and needs help with backing vocals (which she definitely did)...she shouldn't have been there in the first place. The BBC should have looked into her live performances before offering her the gig. We are heading back into the habit of trying to prop up unknown to middle of the road singers to try and gift them a career off the back of Eurovision. It only worked with Sam Ryder because he could actually sing...
@@stevenalderley9036 I can't work out how the vetting process allowed this. I could understand back when the UK public had the last say and picked nonsense like that middle aged man rapping about school etc just for a laugh. This was supposedly selected by people who know what they are doing. The song picked two years ago was even worse than this, I'm starting to think they just got lucky with Sam Ryder. When she sang this song on semi final night, there were obvious issues too. They didn't do enough to fix them.
The year after Portugal won in 2017 they hosted and came last, seems to be that the host country never does well after winning or doing well the previous year (solidarity to Ukraine but UK basically won on performance last year i'd argue). That being I don't think the song choice was right for Eurovision and the meaning of the song didn't really come across.
Selection process needs to be from music judges, not public vote, public votes for any catchy trash (nothing wrong with catchy trash, it's just for the car radio and not good enough for Eurovision) and we see entry after entry that's sub par and just below what's expected of the UK.
I am no lover of Eurovision but, who ever was responsible for mixing that song should be held to account. The vocals were almost inaudible. She deserved better.
I think there's a eurovision stigma in the UK music industry, eurovision tends to signal the end of your professional music career in the UK; especially if you don't win.
@@RobVice we could send Adele, Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa etc, but they probably would never do it. If you don't win, it looks terrible for them. I think it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy because we don't send more talented singers.

I'm no expert in music but the tune, melody and vibe was good. Certainly puts you in the summer mood... Honestly? It sounds like someone deliberately gave her the wrong microphone. It sounded as if she was singing with no mic. I get her 'street' British accent which was something fresh, it just didnt go well with the shitty mic. Bless her... Well yeah but, you don't get any actual analysis from Graham Norton so I'd expect no less from his understudy. I often think why don't they have a musicologist present in the studio with them but, we all know why 😬
@jordanwarner8026 Indeed. A part of me actually believes the Eurovision doesn't really shoot for putting out the absolute best of the best, because it becomes unrelatable to an audience who are predominantly enamoured by mediocrity. If the general public truly yearned for music to a musicologist standard, bands like Tool would constantly be hitting number 1s lol. A beautiful but strange world that would be! Also, crap music generates more post competition conversation.

The audio mixing in this year's contest was terrible! It happened to most of the artists, why were their voices so awfully quiet compared to the instruments and backing vocals. Like here, I don't even think she sung that badly but I could barely hear her! Only in few songs, like Sweden or Albania for example, the singers' voices were as loud as they should've been. The same problem occurred in the semifinals and I'm really shocked they were unable to fix it.
This was one of the catchiest songs this year. I like it so much, this girl has good energy and she’s beautiful, but something went wrong with her singing and voice, I think the lack of backing vocals being the main problem. Reminds me of Cyprus last year - great song, but poor performance. Nevertheless, this song is gonna be one of the best hits this year. I love it! 💘
Well Mae wrote a good song but her vocal abilities singing live were not so good. She was so attractive but that was not enough. Best of luck next year. I just wanna thank you for hosting such a wonderful show on a behalf of Ukraine. The UK exactly knows how to make a good party. We all were united by music and we all will never walk alone. ❤️
@@sjborg3692 I'd argue he was out there, at least a little bit, cause there was the weird costume thing he had on. But even so, this song was still particularly unlike the stuff you get at Eurovision
Sam Ryder is a great live performer, Mae Muller is not... The conclusion should be to send another great live performer with a great song not to go back to your past attempts at being "out there because that's what works for Eurovision", no, that's not what works for Eurovision. In the past 20 years you reached top 10, even top 5, at the few times you sent people who can actually perform. Do that.
Didn't even notice. Really poor performance live, sounded absolutely nothing like the recorded version. And even that was never standing a chance of winning in the first place.
I am a recent immigrant in the UK but I felt like as if the UK was my home country. It was so sad to see Mae taking such a low place. The singing was not great, but the song itself is very catchy and deserved much better. But overall the show was great, I really liked the UK as a host country and felt proud to be a part of this country nowadays
She was failed because the mic wasn’t loud enough which is partly why it sounded horrible because she had to strain her voice so you could hear her in the first place. The same happened with Poland this year. Plus its a song you’d hear in the middle of primark on a Saturday morning in the middle of a shopping centre. And she tried her best, so what of we came 25th it was still a radio bop
I love how people are giving Mae crap for her performance. Like I bet you couldn’t do better. I bet the ones giving her the harshest criticism are tone deaf and can’t sing to save there lives
Yeah but the difference is that we are not claiming to be artists. I'm a criminologist. It would be pretty weird if I completely messed up some crime statistics and then said: "What? You do a better job!" It is my job to know this stuff and to perform this task. Why would we expect less from a singer? Like omg... we can't even expect performers/singers to actually perform/sing well? It's their job! 🙄
Nothing wrong with knowing your strengths and weaknesses and this is just proof that many singers don't have what it takes to perform live. When you have to rely on the studio trappings to sound good, best stick to the studio.
This is another example of where the singer doesn't have a fabulous voice and all the work is done in the studio. Then when it's sung live, it just isn't the same. The thing about Eurovision winners of late is, they have amazing voices. Why did the UK go this route after last year's success? Makes no sense.
Based on this performance, she seems to be a "head singer" rather than a "chest singer" (look up the terms if you don't know them). Maybe it was overwhelming nerves? Because breath control goes out the window when anxiety takes over. So strange, really. Being a "chest singer" and being so vocally trained that breath control comes naturally might not be vital in the top 40 these days but it is vital in Eurovision because you're singing live before an audience of Europeans who know about music. In Eastern European countries (and even in countries like France where I live), there are a LOT of classically trained people and musicians and a poppy performance with no outstanding features won't cut it. (Edit: it would only cut it if it was an uproariously camp performance because there are enough fans of that for you to do well)
@@ls-zx5kq Yeah, I do have empathy for her because I would literally have been shaking performing in front of hundreds never mind billions aged 25. There's such anticipation and build-up for a long time and then she had to sing last, the poor girl. I hope she realizes that there's much more to life than ephemeral, here today gone tomorrow pop "success" because "success" always comes at a price...
@4thchairman471 Yeah, I definitely feel a lot of empathy. There's such a long build-up over months to Eurovision and then the poor girl had to wait and listen (or not) to everyone else before performing last. The top 40 has been generally shockingly bad for years and years and too much studio enhancements and tricks shore up weak vocalists or inexperienced performers. But singing live still exposes people and any weakness is magnified, sadly. I hope she realizes that passing "success" isn't all it's cracked up to be in any case and too much fame often destroys folk.
@@leenieledejo6849 Apologies, I don’t mean to say you did say that. But I personally haven’t seen many classical trained singers during this year’s Eurovision, so I was just a bit confused about your comment singling out UK’s entry in particular as being a ‘head singer’.
Okay look everyone: It's not the song that's the problem, or her really - it's the way this stadium set up her vocals. I am a student vocalist and musician going into college, and I can tell it's not the song - it's the way it sounded live rather than on the radio. The Eurovision jury should be mature enough to judge the song for the SONG ITSELF, not the way it was performed and tech messed up
There’s nothing wrong with the staging. Sadly this is a case of poor vocal coaching. Her diction is poor, her intonation is inaccurate and when she’s singing phrases she’s only providing tone to half her notes. Her breathing was too high , so moving and singing was a problem for her. It’s just generally been badly mismanaged. There’s a big difference between trained singers like Loreen and the Norway entry and those who pick up singing from TikTok or similar and it shows. I think she’s been let down here.
Surely no Brit actually thinks this performance should’ve been placed higher than it was? Like, really? It’s crazy to think Germany (an act that could actually sing) came below us.
I don’t we are under any illusion we generally place where we belong. Sam Ryder was possibly our only genuine attempt in a long time. We really need passionate people like him. Plus i don’t think any country can afford to host 2 years running at the moment, probably a tactical loss 😂
Yeah Germany could definitely sing really well I think the only bad thing about it was some of the lyrics “we’re so happy we could die” in particular sounds like it was written by a reception kid
As a Brit I was utterly mortified by her performance and if I could have voted her off the contest, I would have. I'd rather we not be in it at all than submit singers this bad.
