I drive past this site twice a year on my way to southern Saskatchewan...I saw the fence and the piles of material all overgrown...never realized it was a quarry.

A very good video and information on the quarry and the railroad. I was always wondering why they shut down the railroad to that quarry and in the area!! Parts of the old railroad on that spur are part of the snowman groomed trail in winter for snowmobiling.

If the water is very deep and limestone lakes are perfect for trout, I'm wondering if there are fish in those two lakes - pike, lake trout, pickerel ????
@TravelsWithBill
@TravelsWithBill 2 года назад
That's a great question! I'm guessing there aren't unless someone stocked it - but given all the trespassing signs I'm sure no one officially did. Never know if a local put some in though?

Thats cool. I remember a bit about that school trip, but not a lot. The big thing was the size of the tires on the truck. And... that the teacher got lost getting us there... but we eventually found our way. And still had time to go mini-golfing later at the old course on the East side of Swan River.

Thanks Bill. I remember driving out to the quarry with my parents and siblings when it was being built. At that time, there was just a long cement shaft that had been newly constructed. I thought I was very brave running down to the end by myself. My dad didn’t work at the quarry but we knew many of the men who did because we lived in Mafeking. A Mr. Thompson and his wife moved to Mafeking and built a flat roofed house not far from where we lived. Mr.Thompson moved to Mafeking because of the quarry. He was in a management position. I can’t remember his first name. What a great idea you have doing these videos. You have a good voice for it.

It's so great to hear from you Betty! I had forgotten you grew up there until you mentioned it. I was only up there the one time. I barely even remember the rock trains. My parents talk about how once they started running through Swan River instead of going to Hudson Bay it was scary how fast they would travel in town. One time they were at the crossing and had stopped for the lights and bells. The elevator was still there right beside the road so you couldn't see the track or train coming from the North. Someone else tried to race the train and went through thinking it was a little ways back yet. It wasn't. The train missed their car by only a couple feet. Ooops! Hope you are doing well - and keep watching! Lots more places to come on the channel.

Thanks Bill, what a great video!! So proud that my family was apart of this history as that is my grandpa in the blasting pictures. Also a big thanks to my aunt for keeping those pictures and the memories of Mafeking alive. Great Job Bill!!

I'm glad you liked it! The photos were a big part of making it come alive. I'm sure more people have them at home too and there may even be some home movies around someplace. Just always a trick to find them.

Great job once again Bill. I used to stop by there occasionally and watch the rock wagons coming and going. I think they were 35 tonne trucks at the time. Someone can correct me if that’s not right. Keep your great videos coming😀

I was never up that way much as a kid, but I'm sure I would have wanted to stop and watch too. It's neat to know we have such a cool story in our back yard.

Little off topic but what is that big blue building in mafeking? Hockey rink?
@TravelsWithBill
@TravelsWithBill 8 месяцев назад
Almost a hockey rink. The old one burned down so the new one was partially built. From what I understand it was never fully finished inside and was never used for hockey.

Hi Bill I love your videos. I have travelled extensively in Man/ Sask and still do part time as I’m semi retired. Seeing your videos takes me back to all the place I have been. I usually consumed every bit of history I could find along the way. Just an aside. Check out the finest museum in MB in The Pas, the Sam Waller Museum. I remember meeting hi when he was allowing people to come into his house on the Hwy going into The Pas. Anyways I digress from my intent. I would like an address or a place I can drop off a package for you. I will not divulge the contents, but I h now you will appreciate it, and the history behind it. David Sutherland. PS I’ll be going up to , The Pas / Dauphin in a few weeks.

I like packages and surprises. If you're sending it by mail it goes to Box 1388 Swan River MB R0L 1Z0 or if you are dropping it off the best spot is 135 5th Ave North - the old Town Office in Swan River. Someone is there Monday to Friday, 9 to 5. I look forward to seeing what it is!
