The ending was actually good, he got a GREAT start for a new life. He can also patch with the chinese girl. It's his wife fault for falling for a criminal who happens to be her childhood lover.
It has always been an "old friend from school" this movie is as realistic as it could get, and props to the protagonist for leaving his wife to the streets... he choose to remain faithful to her but she didn't reciprocate.
Damn, that ending went HARD! I was NOT expecting things to end so bitterly, but that was great. They COULD have been okay, it COULD have all ended well, the criminal friend could have left for a better life, the investigation was over, everyone was clear... but too much has happened, too much has been given up, lost, and transformed. Now EVERYONE kinda lost. The cop got the promotion but it costed him EVERYTHING, the whole REASON why he wanted the promotion. So sad yet so true.
Sometimes when you reached what you "thought" you desire, you always lost a part of yourself in the process. Saw that coming actually at the ending as there are alot of foreshadowing happened. As they say, when you gaze into the abyss, the abyss always stares back. So that will be the burden that they will forever carry. I like how they write this. This is quite realistic. Indeed a masterpiece for me. I will watch the whole series
Wow, just wow. To have your "wife" show such a reaction for her ex-lover like that. This series really chose the right path. Shes for the streets, she was never no wife.
