Soak in white Vinegar for 24 -48 hours.. Excellent rust remover. Great for small engine metal tanks, Cleaning nuts and bolts, I also use it for cleaning Coleman lantern and stove tanks.

This guy hasn't got a clue... The reason why the light quit was lack of care, it shows in his work space..

I agree this video is unhelpful. Try putting Mag lite in freezer for 4 hours. Then stand bottom end in jar of boiling water for a minute before banging it on work bench. Stuck battery will stay cold while aluminium tube expands with heat. Once battery gets level with the end of the tube banging on the bench you need to use a cross pein hammer. Hold the edge of the tube on the pein of the hammer and then slam that on the bench so the battery can slide past. Took me half an hour o but worked for me after I had spent a whole day trying all the other methods suggested in other videos (solvents etc). As far as I can tell you cant get access to the top end.

So since the batteries a bad and corroded in there ive taken a long screw and screwed directly into the battery. Once thats done you can grab the exposed end of the screw and pull it out with vice grips. The battery may fizzle a little bit but it wont explode like a lithium ion battery would. Battery acid will be present so take neccessary precautions. Clean battery tube of flash light with probably a stiff nylon brush as a wire brush will scratch the living hell out of it. Then should clean up the remaining excess with a cotton rag or t-shirt. Insert one new battery to make sure it slides down battery tube. if it moves like a buttered up fat kid on a slip&slide, you now know you're in action and can insert rest of the batteries. Hope this helps and Good luck.

And also soak the body overnight in vinegar. And to help it not to happen again I put a little bit of this stuff called ‘corrosion killer’ its made by Killer RC and it’s safe on batteries and electrical circuit boards, rc receivers, servos etc. I use the stuff in R.C. It works a treat. I did exactly what you sed when my maglite batteries leaked, then followed it on with my procedure

@@Tom-qx5nl exactly I found the problem with my mag lights to be the Duracell batteries, supposedly they will warranty that if there's Duracell's in there too. Something else, There is a small spring clip in the top that stops the guts from coming out the lens end. Use a pick and flat head to remove clip, then use punch/rod/or dowel to pound out battery. I just completed mine and didn't find a video explaining it. Hope this helps also.

I vouch for vinegar as well. The fuzyy white/blue Alkaline battery crystal mess is basey, so an acid like vinegar can dissolve/stop them from growing. That plus some elbowgrease: scrub scrub! :)

There is a circular retaining clip in the tube (not shown in this video) in my two Maglites (D size battery), at the top of the switch assembly. IF you remove it ; then the switch assembly comes out the top, you can easily get corroded/ frozen batteries out. I used a 1" socket and extension with a rubber hammer to drive it out.
@boarderfalife

How do you remove the circular retaining clip
@simonking6247
@simonking6247 4 года назад
B.R. Field I can remove the retaining clip on a maglite where the cells aren’t blown and the flash switch/bulb housing is already removed, but on the Maglite where the cells have corroded I can not get the clip out as the switch unit is pushed up against it! Any ideas?

@@boarderfalife Hello, unscrew and remove top of flashlight, unscrew and remove the blub. (Look inside and you will see the retaining ring, but don't remove yet). Then remove the rubber cover over the switch, then use a 2MM allen key to loosen the switch assembly retaining screw. NOW remove the retaining ring (with a flat blade screwdriver) and then switch assembly (push in switch) from the top .

Amateur repair without knowledge of how it is put together. Hammering it on furniture is pathetic - use a press.

Google "how to remove the switch assembly from maglite". I removed the switch assembly out through the top and hammered the batteries down through the top using a large wooden dowel. I tried carburetor cleaner and bore cleaner to loosen up my 4 stuck batteries. Not sure if that did much good, but they all came out eventually.

FYI they will warranty the flashlight if they are Duracell's, if they're not I think you have to pay to replace it. EDIT: apparently they change this policy sometime in the 10 years since I looked at the website, they've also started including energizers in their packaging. All my problems have ever been with Duracell's and very less frequently other brands, conveniently I had a brand new one less than a couple of years old that decided to go up on me again with the original OEM batteries but it was a 2xAAA. I need to follow up on the email boy was I not happy when I found it at two in the morning. I've taken to anything with non-rechargeable batteries either gets removed when not in use or regularly inspected. The Duracell's will just go whenever they feel like it, other brands it's usually sometime after they go dead.

How would I fix my 4 cell maglite the cap is like sealed on from the batteries they've been in it for 5 years
@lardy70s
@lardy70s 3 года назад
I would remove the reflector at the top of the maglite and remove the bulb. Next you need to remove the rubber button and you'll see the switch which has a small hole in it. Use a very small allen key that fits into the hole and you'll feel it locate within the allen screw. Loosen it off. Looking down the top you'll see the switch which is held by a type of plastic circlip. This is very difficult to remove as your batteries are seized and is holding the switch up. You need to concentrate on removing the end cap. Apply a little heat from a hair dryer and using some mole grips/vice grips try loosening the cap. You have to remove this. If you have removed the cap, you should see the bottom of the seized battery. Pour some vinegar into the bottom of the maglite and leave over night preferably in an upright position. Put some more vinegar in and leave for an hour or so. Strike the bottom of the Maglite square on on a good piece of WOOD!. Nothing else!. Keep doing this whilst adding a little vinegar. The vinegar eats into the corrosion. You can also use some penetrating spray to lubricate to assist. If you manage to remove the first battery, continue with the rest. If you get them all out, the switch should come out also. Pour some more vinegar into the tube. Once you're satisfied, wash the maglite with some washing up liquid and hot water. Dry thoroughly. Spray some contact cleaner on the switch and make sure it's clean. Refit the switch and tighten up the Allen screw. Fit the bulb and the reflector. Add new batteries. Let me know how you got on?.
