The Light Pours Out Of Me, by Magazine. Released on their first album "Real Life", 1978. Copyright belongs to the authors/label. This is the first "sucessful" band John McGeoch was in. I don't know what else to say. Be happy!
My hero Mr John McGeoch ❤️ if i can learn guitar just to be able to play one of his riffs i swear I'll die a happy man, thankyou so much for doing justice to this genius ❤️😊
Hey awesome! I just did this one last night and it gave me a link to yours, so I took it because I think you do the best John McGeoch covers. You are the specialist! I like the way you did the third verse with the second guitar part (?) added. Awesome. :)
Guedzilla Ya, I do it differently than you do -- less faithful to the way McGeoch does it than you. I really thought the bridge/coda with the string bends needs just a slight touch of modulation to make them spectacular. At first I tried my flanger, but I liked the Phase 90 sound better. :)
***** Oh yes but he created it :) This other day I watched a band that sounded a bit like the Queens of the Stone Age... and it was all fine, until the guitarist/singer started mimicking the moves... Or do you mean the pink V neck jumper? Robert Smith got away with something similar too...
That's brilliant! Have got it now. Makes a big difference and fills out the sound. Will have to practice it a bit more but I use light gauge strings so it's not too bad. Many thanks and have been working my way through your Banshees vids too! Am also a big fan of Daniel Ash, Robert Smith, Andy Gill and Johnny Marr! Take care!
Thanks for watching and writing me. That parts is the G string being bent until it hits the same note as the one I'm holding on the B string. So, 2 strings played, one string bent...
Fantastic cover! Great to see another that recognizes the genius of the late John McGeoch. What model guitar is that? SG2000? What effects and amp do you use? I see you've made a cover of 'The Light Pours Out Of Me (Magazine). Planning to make more Magazine covers? I hope so. Keep up the good work. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. Kudos! Cheers!
Thank you! That's an SG3000. I'm not sure on the effects, this one is probably straight into the audio card and run through guitar rig. I think I managed to get close to the original sound using some Marshall amp simulators/equivalents, and some EQing. I'd like to do a few more Magazine songs, as well as some Banshees and Armoury Show ones. Thanks for watching and writing me!
@quadreverb Oh, you're right. I'm doing the slide from G#, but I just checked the original video, it goes from F#... oh well. =) If I remember correctly, I'm playing straight into the soundcard, using a Marshall JCM simulator. I tried to set it as similar to the original sound as possible.
@rey4455 Thanks! I haven't done a tab, but you can probably find one around the internet... since it's not such a difficult song. On this video I'm recording straight into the soundboard and using a Marshall amp simulator plugin. It's probably just the Marshall, or perhaps a little boost from a Tubescreamer sort of plugin too.
Whoa. Nice Yamaha SG, dude. That is a 2000, yes? I used to have one. Wish I'd never traded that guitar, but I owed this guy back rent. Anyway, thanks for the wonderful demo. Very nice to watch someone else's fingerings, and to hear the guitar part so clearly.Magazine's influence continues to grow.
@Guedzilla yeah motorcade is as mindblowing as voodo dolly, is amazing stuff. but you know there is a song call "stuck"(the correct use of soap) i like that guitar for some strange reason, also "cut out shapes" is quite interesting...... men i'm a mcgeoch geek or something =)
@Guedzilla yeah motorcade its mindblowing like voodo dolly, but hey those 3 albums (real life, secondhand daylight and the correct use of soap)are amazing can't tell wich i like the most
@montes12 The Light (...) is just the easy choice eh? I was gonna do Motorcade... but that solo got me intimidated =) My other option was Permafrost. But I wanted to record a Magazine song for so long now, I just went with the easy choice =) Gotta listen to Philadelphia (will do right now, actually).
well done. thank you for the demo. i have subscribed and will be following. my brother thames sinclair was flown over by devoto and hired for the job only to decline and stay loyal to a band that didn't quite make it here in los angeles in the early 80's. choir invisible. thats life. i wish i could play half as good as him.
Wow. Great story... Can't blame your brother, gotta believe in what you're doing :) Is there anything available of that band? Thanks for watching and writing me!
Guedzilla hey g., yes choir invisible should be on you tube. great post-punk band, but weak singer. i wish he took the magazine gig because it would have lead to much more. he did session work for "x", "youth brigade",and several other bands.he is married and moved to portland and is a working stiff now but he was on a top 10 all time post punk guitarist a friend had told me years ago. he was also in the flyboys. a day-glo surf/punk band.their drummer went to "the crowd",a very popular orange county,ca. punk band. their most popular song was "the right place". 999 was a huge influence on tim(thames). me as well. i just got a double cut les paul junior. everything goes full circle. i'm really into 999,buzzcocks,and magazine right now. back to basics. stay golden pony boy!
@Guedzilla Just nitpicking, but in the opening riff try the slide up from 2nd fret on the E string instead of the 3rd fret. Out of interest what distortion and amp are using? It sounds great!
Never tried to play that one... I might give it a go, but don't hold your breath (I'm far too lazy to do this on any sort of frequency). I think the stuff on Magazine's 3rd album is more complex to play than the ones before.
@Mookie6120 Thanks! It's easier to get the tone close to the original when recording straight into the soundboard... lots of tweaking afterwards and so...
@spinach1999 I've got those files. Someone had them posted online almost two years ago. The Boston show, 1979, as well as a show in Lynn, Mass. from Aug 1980 AND the Rockpalast show from Berlin, Oct 30 1980.I've done some preliminary Google searches and haven't been able to find MP3 postings since. I'd probably just send you a disc with all 3 bootlegs if you're seriously jonesing.
Opa, valeu rapaz! Esse aqui tem um erro besta no riff principal, uma notinha que eu não prestei atenção na hora de tirar a música, mas só percebi depois que me avisaram aqui... aí deu preguiça de regravar. Moro no interior de sampa...
dmj09 Never really payed attention to that, it was purely reflexive. I was going to do the solo guitar movements but then figured it would be too much… haha
I absolutely loved Magazine. Having John Lydon as a friend (disappointed, like a few people, when friendship reared its' ugly head), I once complimented him on his great choices of musician - such as Jah Wobble, Lu Edmunds and John McGeogh. All Lydon could say was "what about ME?" (TWAT! and I never thought he could sing either, PIL proved it). Is this John McG's guitar, or just another of that model?
Hey there Guedzilla - Thanks for uploading this - great playing! Have got it sounding good except the note bends aren't sounding quite right yet ... there are three notes you are playing in that section of the song (think it's 10th - 9th & 12th fret - then 3rd - 2nd & 5th?) - when you do this how many strings are you playing on each note? Please explain what is going on there :)
@mahatmacote What an interesting story! I'm not very fond of his vocals too... I heard some PIL because of John McGeoch, but it didn't stick to me. My guitar is another of a similar model... it's a SG3000, it should actually sound different from John's SG1000, other pickups etc. There's one guy here on youtube that has one of his guitars, bought second-hand from John's daughter, he recorded a cover of Spellbound.
Cara, vc encarnou o John McGeoch.
well, you know you could try someother songs from magazine like motorcade...also magazine is awesome the guitar thing in philadelphia(the correct us of soap album) is awesome... magazine have amazings riffs from mcgeoch i can't tell witch i loke the more
@spinach1999 I have that boot with the two dolphins cover art. It's a wonderful record, so much better than 'Play'. I saw them only once, at the Lyceum - fantastic.
+keeelane I don't know much about Cobain, I know he was into punk and alternative… but I don't know about post-punk. What I meant is that I don't hear much post-punk influence on Nirvana songs (apart from Come As You Are maybe :P ). But then again, I don't listen to Nirvana anymore… I did for some time when I was younger though.
