Watched the hole series in one go! Man, I have to say it's the best explanation series I ever watched. Such a nice and calm voice, very good animations and very clear instructions. Relly good job, so three times thumbs up!
Seriously I bought the mage night ultimate edition a couple years ago and still haven't played it because I couldn't find a good explanation but your series here really helped out and is a lot easier to learn with the way you presented it
31:00 this is a rules misconception by many players. In fact, Grouped enemies do Not share their resistances. Rather it is that attacks of that type are inefficient for the grouped enemies. This is an important distinction as it means that non-attack/non-block effects of cards of that resistance colour can still be used on the indiviual grouped enemies that do not have the resistance themselves on their enemy token. Great video, thanks!
I really appreaciate your camera movment and zooms. Also your voice is clear and the words you use leave no doubt about the mechanic your are explaning. I would be so happy if you would continue this Mage-Knight series :) - cause this is exactly what I was looking for!
These videos are pure gold. You should be payed by the creators of mage knight. These videos enable many people to play the game properly. You are really good at explaining and make people understand the different topics. I wish all the video tutorials were close to this quality
The video was excellent. I have watched all three while waiting for my copy of mage knight to deliver. You do a great job of explaining the mechanics and I feel I can hit the ground running when I receive the game.
Wow! Such a great video for new and old players. These close ups and various examples are so great to see. A format I wish more tutorial videos would use. So thorough and easy to digest. Amazing job.
Great summary of the combat phase =) A tip I've seen on the threads on BGG to simplify the process for the taking direct damage to the player: For each unblocked attack, divide the total incoming damage by the current armor value, then round up. This gives you the number of wound cards to take into your hand. =) Cheers!
This is one of, if not, the best explanation of the combat system in Mage Knight. Just bought the Ultimate Edition and despite I've watched about 6 hrs of game play on RU-vid so far, your video just explains it best! Condensed and precise without any detours that distract from the topic. Thanks!
I totally agree. I am coming back to MK after quite a while and went straight for a ‘how to’ reminder about combat 😊. I’ve watched so many videos over the last few years on MK. This is really excellent and I would recommend this to any new players. Thanks very much for the effort you put into the making of this and into the script, Ronan
Hi there, I am using your videos to learn - thanks so much! I have a question about the golem unit's resistance. It has 3 shield (but resistance to physical). The enemy in your example had 6 physical attack. Wouldn't the enemy's 6 physical be reduced to 3 (because of the golem's resistance), meaning the golem takes no wound card? Why does 3 damage apply, then a wound card, then another 3? I'm having a hard time understanding the wound system. It seems counter intuitive.
Actually, I answered my own question by looking in the rulebook. "If you assign damage to a unit, it gets wounded irrespective of its armor. the armor value just tells you how much to reduce the damage total by after assigning the unit a wound." I think in the video this could have been more clear by first assigning the wound, stating this always occurs, then explaining how the 3 armor with physical resistance reduces the 6 phsyical attack to zero, ending the assign damage phase.
Hi Rob, you're right that a unit normally take a wound when you assign damage to one, where this isn't the case though is if a unit has a resistance that applies to the damage being dealt. When you assign damage a unit has resistance to, you assign damage up to the unit's armor value first without them taking a wound and then if you continue to assign damage to the unit, you give them a wound card and you can again assign damage up to the units armor value. Alternatively, you could only assign a unit with resistance damage up to its armor value and then assign any remaining damage to another unit or your hero. If you did this, your unit would not take a wound. Hope this helps a bit without muddying the water :)
Thanks for the feedback. Some nights editing was a bit crazy where I would go to bed dreaming of using the keyboard shortcuts for my editing software lol.
At 33:56 when assigning the werewolf's damage you decided to take the remaining 3 damage on your hero taking a wound card, however, it seems to me you could've assigned that 3 damage for free against your Guardian Golems since they have physical resistance - was there any reason why you wouldn't just do that?
thank u very much for this video..all is very clear!! I have a question about phys resistant units...in the example, if the golem block a 6 point attack, they immediately absorb 3. So the attack is now 3. Since the armor is also 3, aren't they supposed to take no damage?
Love the video. For the last battle it would've been better to assign the 7 damage to both the Forresters and Golems. Let the Forresters take first 4 damage then the Guardian Golems take the remaining 3 damage with no wound.
Good point. Anyone who reads through these comments, heed this advice as a better option to absorb damage in the multiplayer example. Thanks for the feedback!
At 27:37, you block a fire attack with a fire block 4, but earlier, you blocked fire attacks with ice blocks... was it a mistake at 27:37? Should you have blocked with an ice block?
I will say it is definitely a different system. I always have to go back and double check how to do this if I’ve been away from the game for a while, or if I have a few units with resistance etc…
I don't really get the damage on your hero. If I were to receive 6 damage and assign 2 to a follower, 4 damage would go to my hero. If I have a defense of 2, I would take a wound card and then face the 2 damage left over. This doesn't exceed my armor value; so why would I still take a wound card? Does blocking automatically mean receiving a wound card regardless of your armor value? Another thing I was wondering about was a follower's resistance. Normally a follower can only take damage once and the remainder goes to your hero. But if the follower has a matching resistance to the type of attack, he can take damage a second time? (if so, does the follower receive an additional wound like the hero does in my first question?)
HI Dutch Blades. For the first part of your question with the 6 damage example, you would first assign damage to your units/ followers and then your hero. So if I had a unit with an armor of 2, that unit would receive a wound card and then there would still be 4 damage to assign to my hero. If my hero has an armor of two, my hero would add two wound cards to my hand (one for each 2pts of damage remaining). You always take a wound card first and then subtract your armor value from the damage remaining. You have the option not to assign any damage to your unit and let your hero take all of the damage. In that case you would take three wound cards. Hope that makes some sort of sense. For the second part of your question. If a unit has resistance, then your unit can take damage up to its armor value without taking a wound and then if you want to continue assigning damage to that unit, you can, but it will get a wound card and then you can assign damage up to its armor value again. Again hope that helps.
@@ModernTablegamer Thanks for clearing that up! Loving the videos and can't wait to play my first game of MG :) My copy will be here this week, so I'm getting prepared!
These 3 videos were really great. Well done and informative. I'm about to play this game for the first time very soon. This made me look forward to it even more (if that's possible..) Thank you!
Couple days ago, during an early turn, I fought a summoner who summoned a werewolf with 7 attack for my hero with only 2 defense (no units) and a hand limit of 5, so i took five wound cards and was just knocked out for the whole rest of the round! Ended up abandoning that game, but I think I should have taken four wound cards instead of five, right? Dang. Whoops.
When assigning damage, if there was 1 more point of damage to assign and your character had an armor value of 2, why would the armor not soak up the last point of damage preventing the wound?
Awesome series, tyvm. Great refresher after not playing for a while! And honestly I think I never used the rule for units with resistance propperly. I always just treated their resistnce as twice as much, and would apply wound even when the damage was below the resistance treshhold.
At 13:25ish you say "Remember, you have to wound units first". While this is correct (you have to wound units BEFORE you wound the hero) it can be interpreted as though you MUST wound units (and do so first). Just to clarify, you don't HAVE TO wound any units at all if you want, you can also assign all damage to the hero.
The best MK tutorial out there IMO - thanks so much for that! But... I just can't find the - over and over mentioned - Video, teaching us all about healing. 🤷♂😟 Could you please put a link in the description? Thank you... 🙏
At 27:37 you show unit Guardian Golems powered Fire Block 4 to block a 3 fire attack from a Fire Golem. You needed an blue mana instead to power the Ice Block 4 for an efficient block or to show an extra 2 block from somewhere else.
Great video! Watching it I realize that the block and the resistance it's quite confusing. In block we use opposite elements, but resistance is resistance of the same element. When I play a feel combat with elements was going strange. You helped me to find the problem. Thanks for the explanation full of good examples ❤.
Heard good things about this game, it’s expensive tho. The ultimate edition is like close to 150 here. If it was you guys, would you buy it at that price? (Note I don’t know if it’s priced the same in the USA)
Hey Pete, I have a question... Let’s say I am going to challenge some enemies at night ... Do I have to declare and play “special” cards like “mana draw” that may help with my combat before the enemy token is revealed?... or can I only play “attack” cards once combat commences?
So a unit attacking with 5, you must either block it all or dont bother blocking. In other words, I cant block 2 then assign 3 damage. All or nothing, correct? Also in an earlier version you said a unit can only have one wound card. But if they get poisoned they get 2? So poison is an exception. The only exception to the 'only 1 wound card on a unit'? 34:01 what happens if you kill one of the enemies but the other you are unable to? I'm guessing that you remove the enemy you defeated, place the enemy you didnt defeat back in the target hex, then you retreat to the hex you came from and collect the rewards only from the defeated enemy?
I have been using this series to help me on my first play through; honestly feel like I've had to study these rules longer than most of my courses in school!
Great Video!!! But isn't the last ability of altem mages affecting ALL different attacks this combat? Meaning can be used on sepparate opponents of the same combat without need to group them in one attack?
Fantastic video! My copy of MK is arriving tomorrow and I’m learning the game through yours and other great videos. Question at 34:00 why did you not use the Golems to block? If the Forester blocked 4 of 7 leaving 3, the Golems have physical resistance so they take zero wounds leaving zero for you. So the total wounds issued would have been 1. Is my strategy correct? If not, what am I missing? Thanks.
Thanks so much Joe! Good strategic catch there. You’re right. I cover this better option in the May updates video about 2/3rds through if you want check it out. Updates May 2020 - More Mage Knight? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_BQ7PlSlwu4.html
Your a legend... I brought this game thinking I was going to be ok....but totally freaked out when I opened the box... but thanks to your excellent vids I'm working through the road blocks and starting to LOVE this game!!! THANKYOU
Ordered Mage Knight on Amazon a few days ago, started watching these videos, after all 3 I feel like I'm ready to get started with just a few references to the rules as I go on, good job
@@ModernTablegamer update: ive been addicted to mage knight and already ordered all expansions. The game is very complex and these videos were integral to get me to jump in and enjoy it without being bogged down by the rules
@@ModernTablegamer oh also this is the perfect format, just recently watched the gloomhaven series you have up as well, would love to see more multi-part how to play series
Hmmmm - went through all videos. You explain end of turn, but not end of round in any video.... too bad, had hoped this would be the definitive MK explanation
@@ModernTablegamer hi. Another question. What if the monster already has poison status and fighting on a green city. Does it mean i take two wound card at discard pile for every wound card i take on my hand? Thank you in advance
you sir are awesome, I`ll say it again.. u are awesome! Love this! Havent played in like 9 months but im gonna teach my girlfriend now and we are not gonna play anything else.. theese are our dubbel dejts now thanks to you! :D
Great explanation. I really like that you've split the whole tutorial series into separate videos. It is easier to search for answers for specific little things. Thanks a lot!
I think I FINALLY understand this! Yeah! Thanks so much. I've only gotten to play Mage Knight once so far, but was completely mystified as to what I was looking at when it came to the enemies.
I remember your Pax pamir video, just incredible. You managed to top it, these mage knight videos just made me purchase the base game again ! I sold the ultimate edition 1.5y ago because I found it too complex. With your videos I feel like I'm ready, also because I've played much heavier games since I sold my copy. Huge thanks for this top notch tutorial, i cannot imagine how long it took you
I have always struggled to understand why you would fight and take damage (unless you got surprised). I love the idea that I may choose to get hurt so I can take someone down. Thanks for your video! Brilliant!
@Tim Rourke it is an interesting mechanism to use in battle. One I find you have to use when up against and enemy with swift or with an attack you don’t have an efficient block against. Maybe thematically this could be la decision you make about just taking the wound or having your shield destroyed by a fire blast :)
These videos have been put together really well and is easy to follow. Pick up Mage Knight Ultimate Edition yesterday and going to be playing it for the first time today. Watching these has certainly made my initial startup learning so much less daunting and I am now actually excited to play my first game :) thanks again. Look forward to watching more content.
I love Mage Knight and have been playing it recently on tabletop simulator, but the rules have a hard time explaining combat this video explains everything much better that I need to know it helped a lot.
Again, amazing video! A few questions... If you move through a space with an enemy (e.g., a keep) but don't stop there, do you engage in combat? Or only when you end your move phase in a space with an enemy (or adjacent to it, in some cases? And do you fight other players if you're playing coop? Lastly, if you're fighting multiple enemies and one has cold resistance and the other fire resistance, does that mean that, when treating them as a group, they have cold fire resistance as well?
Hi Felipe, Some sites like unconquered Keeps and Mage Towers as soon as you enter the site, you engage in an combat with the enemies. Other sites like adventure sites (Tombs, Dungeons and Ancient Ruins) and Monasteries give you the option to engage in combat. There are reference cards for each site that are really helpful for remembering which ones you can pass through freely and which ones you will have to stop in. I believe the co op games you can end your turn in the same space as other players with no harm. It is in the competitive scenarios where you would have to enter PvP combat with other players if you end your turn in the same space as them. Your last question is a good one. I would think when fighting the enemies as a group, this would block your cold fire attacks since you would be up against both fire and ice resistances. So cold fire wouldn't get through. Maybe someone can help clarify? Thanks again for the comments and questions.
So I have a question. When you attack enemies with just Ice and Fire resistance with physical attacks, are the physical attacks fully going through or do they get halved?Just not sure if physical attacks work the same way as blocks against an elemental factor.
Hi Afohealt Gechev, the physical attack would go through at full strength. That is unless the enemy has physical resistance (the black pentagon icon). I hope that helps!
This is fantastic! I just got Mage Knight and took one look at the icons on the enemies and the rules for combat in the rulebook. I was almost ready to put the game back in the box haha. This is so informative.
One small thing: I think the example at 27:37 is wrong. To Block a Fire Attack of 3 You would need THE OPPOSITE element (e.g. Ice Block), so it should display a blue mana instead of a read one, right?
About the loyalty ribbon of Norowas: one should uncover two gray units (I can then only choose one of these two units for the loyalty ribbon or also from the previously uncovered units). And I can only recruit the unit where it would be available (e.g. in a mage tower).
Thank you for taking the time to make these videos! I feel ready to play now, just a little fine tuning in the rules and i will be good to go. Very nice!
@@wicaksonoadi1035 Thanks for the post in your FB group. Looks like you all have a really good time in your group. I just requested to join as Pete Krause
13:40 WHAT?! You have to assign 6 damage. The peasants took 3 of it with their armor rating. Then YOUR ARMOR took 2 of it leaving only 1 damage left. WHY are you assigning an extra damage??? 33:55, WHY ARE YOU TAKING A WOUND?! You need to assign 7 damage, your first unit took 4 then then second unit took the remaining 3!!!! Why are you assigning an 8th point to yourself?????? Im so blown away right now!!!! Dude!! No disrespect intended, but you are adding extra damage that you shouldn't be I think LOL You turned 6 damage into 7 and then 7 damage into 8.
Hi Silver Leo. It's good to question this. It seems crazy, but MageKnight is tough. For the example at 13:40, when you assign damage to your character, even if it is less than your armor value, you take a wound card to your hand and then subtract your armor value from the remaining damage. See page 8 Assign Damage Phase section 5.a at this link. wizkidsgames.com/wp-content/uploads/mage/MK_rulebook_ENG_searchable-mar2012.pdf At 33:55 whether I made the right decision or not, the assigning damage is correct. I decided not to assign damage to the Guardian Golems and just assigned 4 damage to the Foresters and 3 damage to my character Goldyx. Similar to the example at 13:40, when you assign damage to your character, you take a damage card first to your hand and then subtract your armor value from any remaining damage. In this case there were three which was equal to my armor value.
Great videos! I just finished the 3rd video for Mage Knight and found them all very informative; I’m almost ready to try playing my base game. Any word on when the final video will be released? Just subscribed btw! Thanks Pete!
Fantastic video Colin! I have payed 3 solo games so far and I am HOOKED! Combat vs multiple enemies had been the biggest head scratcher so far. Bravo for cleaning that up for me. Keep up the good work. Subscribed and notifications turned in for more of your content. 👏👏👏
So Ive played the solo scenario 3 times so far, Conquer 2 cities. So, my question is this: is it normal to just get immediately wiped out by the first city you reach (level 5)??? I had 1 white token and 2 purple tokens. The 3 playthroughs were easy enough, got a wound, healed a wound, killed a bunch of tokens, but once I got to the city..... wiped, all 3 times. I didnt have enough attack to kill even 1 of the tokens while all 3 tokens dealt me 16 points of damage. Even if I killed one of the tokens Id be wiped. Any thoughts or advice?? Im feeling like Ive wasted my time and money :-( I want to enjoy the game, if im missing something then please help me out. Thank you. And then the card showed icons for fire +2, ice +2 and fire+ice +1 and a dark face with a +7 or something. I dont get it. If the card is making the tokens stronger then the combat is impossible to win, ever. Please help me out here guys.
Hi Silver Leo, my experience is similar especially against a tough city like you mention. I’m no pro at this one, but the best I’ve done is by acquiring good spells, artifacts etc, and saving them in my hand until the city battle and then I might take down a token or two, but typically die. May I recommend the Mage Knight: Board Game Facebook group. This is a super active group. I’d be interested in what kind of feedback you get there as well.
@@ModernTablegamer Thank you for the reply. It turns out that I was playing it wrong. After learning the correct way to run combat with multiple enemies I now think I can play it and win next time. I had the rules wrong LOL
The absolute videos! Just got my MKUE and took me one day to read rules and watch videos. Just finished first round and going smoothly! Really thankd for your effort sir! Boardgames community owes you!
Mage Knight is a game that is unique every time you play it because every game you'll forget or botch a different subset of the 1 000 000 rules listed in the rulebook.
I'm new to the mage knight, just brought it a week ago and try to figure out how to play it. This series is the best MK tutorial I ever watched. Thank you for sharing with us! well done!
Great video, just started watching since I got the ultimate edition on sale. One thing missing from the combat video is how to heal wounds and when can you do this. Thanks in advance
Thanks Nathon! Glad the videos could help! Im going to include resting and healing, end of the round and then some smaller loose ends in the next video. Glad you picked up the Ultimate Edition. Enjoy!
