When we look at a rainbow, we see a full spectrum of light. Every colour we could imagine. Except one - magenta.
Where is it? Well, officially magenta doesn't exist. There is no wavelength of light for magenta, meaning the human brain literally makes it up, but how?

It not "existing" is another way of saying it is not a part of the visible light spectrum. When we "split" light through a prism, you can see this. Or a rainbow. It's built of a combination of wavelengths that our brain perceives. Meanwhile, colors like scarlet red or navy blue have a corresponding wavelength.

Interestingly enough it should have a wavelength. It's a combined one but so too are orange and yellow and they have known wavelengths as they are a mix of red and green though orange has less green. Magenta is red and blue and pink is red with some green and blue. Pink has a portion of the blue of purple replaced with green and will appear longer or brighter than magenta. Also light blue light is white with a bit of red and green taken out giving it more of a whitish wavelength so you can also make longer and warm blues. Same with gray but since it's all three colors somewhat dimmed it will be dimmer than white but a light silver could still be almost as bright yet alone prettier but a dark gray would be very short as it goes nearer black which is nothing or very little reflected. Midnight blue would be a very dim color. Purples and Greys and greens can vary a lot

@@negadogeNo, Magenta doesn't exist as a wavelength in the visible light spectrum, only with the combination of blue and red waves do we see the color; in our brains. The "color" of other wave lengths don't apply here because we can't see them. so to say magenta exists in UV rays is irrelevant because we'll never experience them in the first, regardless of it's true or false. The magenta we see is a by product of Human biology and how it takes information based ONLY on the Visible Light Spectrum.

Yes, both brown and magenta are not present in the rainbow, but we perceive magenta as an intermediate between red and blue. That's why artists make color wheels, because we do perceive color as a wheel, not as a spectrum. And magenta is one of the 'pure' colors that appear in that wheel, so we treat it at the same level than red, yellow, green, cyan and blue. Brown is just dark orange. All the colors not present in the rainbow are darker or lighter versions of some other 'pure' color, except magenta. Magenta is not light red or dark blue, it is its own thing, that's why it's special.

Magenta is purple, but you are right about spectrally discontinous colours; spectral filters, made from very thin deposits of glass which cancel very narrow bands of the spectrum through destructive interference, is the basis for eye glasses marketed at people with various forms of "colour blindness" (anomalous trichromatism).
@yogibarista2818

The spectrum ranges R-O-Y-G-B-I-V and anywhere in that continuous range is a corresponding wavelength for a colour we see. But our brain is also able to assemble composite colours, such as Magenta, Brown, White, etc that are not part of the spectrum. So the point is that if composite colours are not part of the light spectrum we evolved with, how and why did we develop the ability to "see" these composite colours and determine what they should look like ?

magenta : A source that emits or reflects BOTH 700nm red lght and 450 nm blue is perceived by humans as as magenta. As far a human eyesight is concerned, some people see IR light which has a greater wave length than Red light... most others can NOT perceive IR light . I agree with ArtistBervucci below. How can the word "exist" apply to the reaction of one's sense of sight, or hearing or touch? Does human reaction to the color magenta from a rotting, dead body and the red of a beautiful flower DIFFER ?

@electriccosmology1269 Год назад
Prisms only creates a linear spectrum of separated light and if you mixed one end with the other then you get magenta, with the colours of red and blue. The brain doesn’t just make up the colour, nature produces it, like with any other colour and to think it does is just very silly and you shouldn’t teach such things as fact. If you worked in a photography laboratory in the past you would have quickly been sacked, if you believed in such things, as you wouldn't know how to use the kit. In old school photography and photographic printing plus in TV, we used two different triads of the true light spectrum and not one just separated by triangular shaped glass. In the old TV sets, we had red, green and blue guns and which when mixed correctly, could make any other colour. With yellow being made from the red and green guns and which was used due to being pure light and so, there was no matter pigment distorting the pure yellow colour and so also proving, there is no such thing as a primary colour. In photography we had to use cyan, magenta and yellow and which when mixed correctly could also make any colour. This triad was used due to the medium having to use pigments and which distorts the colour and so when mixing red and green, will give you brown and which is nothing more than a dirt yellow. To make red, we use magenta and yellow. To make blue we use magenta and cyan and to make green we use yellow and cyan. With the different two triads when viewed together as a spectrum, giving one of the esoteric meanings of the six-pointed star and its Electromagnetic Spectrum roots.
@petergivenbless900
@petergivenbless900 Год назад
As someone with dueteranomalous trichromatism ("red-green colour blindness") I can tell you that the colours you see sometimes differ from the ones I do; this is because all colour perception in humans is a result of how our visual system codifies different wavelengths of light, different animals also see different colours to humans, and not because those wavelengths have any objective colour themselves. In the absence of an observer there is nothing to distinguish one wavelength of electromagnetism from another save the frequency of the wavelength (which extends far beyond what is perceivable by humans).

By this logic none of the colors exist because color is just how the brain percieves electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength between 400nm and 700nm hitting your eye. There is nothing about say, 530nm EM radiation that is inherently green. It''s just how most of us perceive that wavelength. Some of us don't perceive it as green. Others perceive it slightly less "green" than most people. Color blindness comes in many forms. And that's not the only way color vision can be altered. Reality is just a world your brain builds up from all of the stimulus it recieves, like color. Technically, we don't even see in 3D. We need a second eye and some trickery to give any sense of 3D to what we see. And that sense is completely false. Our brains just create the illusion of depth so seamlessly that we almost don't even notice when it's gone when we have one eye closed.

Technically all colours aren't "real", they are experiences in the brain that Jesus made sentient or conscious. It is that ability to experience things directly that really sets us apart instead of mere machines with sensors in deep dreamless sleep and is proof of God. That aside, a lot of colours are composite - made of mixtures of wavelengths. Grey and white for example, but also brown, although you could make it with dim orange light. It's just that because blue and green are right next to each other, and also red and green are fairly near, you can get the colours inbetween stimulating both receptor cells in differing degrees. Red and blue are at opposite ends of the spectrum, and thus there is no magenta halfway between the transition. Probably the closest colour you can make with one wavelength is violet, but it's far more bluey than magenta.
