Seems like the purpose would be to shoot video on location thru a high end PC .... this product is a total winner for that! BTW, this would allow the use of Wirecast with a pc on location! Wow ... that is a great set up!!

Yes a camera is an option, but I am looking for a way to take a screenshot of the output from the tablet, that appears much larger, on the TV. I can see more detail of my app on the tablet on the TV. So need to shot for advertising.

Most of the lower cost alternative cards have terrible reviews on Amazon. So the question is, what more expensive tech is used in this dongle to make it work so much better? I get the impression the other cards are using lower quality components, testing, etc so they only work a percent of the time. There is something to say about using high quality components or tech and that needs to be explained.

It has a dedicated processing chip onboard that automatically does the required scaling/de-interlacing and some compressing which makes it run better on computers. And it's just more reliable

The reason the Magewell was recommended to me was because it plays well with the Dell laptops motherboard. I been using mine for nearly a year with my FDR AX100 4K HD Sony Camera as a main device and has been doing very well. Black Magic products do not work well with Dell motherboards

Got a few questions. 1. What Capture Device is your personal favorite? 2. What mic stand is that?
@EposVox
@EposVox 9 лет назад
For game capture stuff, the Elgato HD60. For broadcast/production-level stuff, I'm not 100% sure, probably the BlackMagic Intensity Shuttle, or something similar - because of the sheer quality you can record things at.

I am interested as I have a vcr/dvd recorder with a hdmi output. I wish to convert my vhs home movies to digital. I would imagine the reason the audio issue is due to copy protection protocol built in. So do you think this would handle this task? Thanks

great video... thanks for the review. I'm thinking of purchasing it for sending a live feed from my Canon 70D dslr to my laptop. I'm a Video Dj and because my software will see it as a web cam it saves me from using an external vision mixer & I like that its not CPU intensive.Two questions.... is there something cheaper you can recommend ? And if I'm using it for live streaming is there much lag ?
@EposVox
@EposVox 9 лет назад
For that purpose - keeping the processing off the CPU, I've not found anything cheaper thus far. And no, not much lag. There's a slight delay, but it's minimal, less than a second, most likely

2017 - full hd was nice in 2015, but not for 300$ anymore. for 100$ extra you may get a hdmi-recorder with monitor. but uhd/4k 10bit would be state of the art. such devices are necessary to get the full quality out of 4k cameras (f.e. panasonic gh4, fz1000). to get them you need 750$... a lot of money.

Great review. Could you tell me if you can set the internal capture rate of the card to 59.94? I currently use an Avermedia Extremecap U3 with Xsplit and it only supports 50.00 and 60.00, meaning stutter/duplicate frames for 59.94 sources (you can set the Xsplit output to whatever you like, but it's the capture card driver settings, like those you find in Virtualdub that only support these framerates). The same limitation is true of the Live Gamer Extreme and the Intensity Shuttle would not work with my laptop, so this is my last option regarding uncompressed capture. As for your question who is it for? Well not game streamers for the reasons you mentioned, but maybe people who do live events and would use this to capture from the video output of a camcorder or something. This would also work in my setup as I have a HDMI upscaler for old consoles that outputs uncompressed audio. Thanks.
@EposVox
@EposVox 8 лет назад
Yep I can set it to 59.94 in OBS Studio just fine! And it actually turns out to be great for game streaming, I still need to make a follow-up video, haha.

This question isn't related to this product per say, but I have recently purchased a 16.5 ft USB 2.0A to Micro cable, for use with my phone and VR streaming. My question is, since this is a USB 2.0 cable, what are my potential limits on resolution, framerate, and bitrate, assuming I'm streaming from my PC to my phone using Nvidia's NVENC codec? And will I experience much signal loss from such a long cable?
@EposVox

Yes, you're not going to get much of a great signal with that setup.

@goldeng
@goldeng 7 лет назад
Thanks for sharing the information about this one. You covered almost everything I needed to know apart from one thing: Is it possible to use HDMI to VGA/DVI/DisplayPort or even to component adapter on the unit's side? The reason for this is that my monitor doesn't have HDMI input =\ And I'm willing to record with this unit some BIOS configuration and OS installation procedures of one machine, while connecting it via USB3.0 to another machine for recording, and that I'd still be able to see the output on my main monitor in full screen resolution. I'm just willing to know if I can basically use an HDMI to whatever adapter on the unit's side so I could connect to it any video source? The setup I was thinking to do is to connect to it an HDMI to DisplayPort splitter so I could connect it to my main display as a pass-through via DisplayPort cable, and to the other input of the splitter to connect any DisplayPort to VGA/DVI/HDMI/Component adapter so that the unit could be fed from an input signal of whatever source. Thanks!
@EposVox
@EposVox 7 лет назад
Yep! I've used DVI, DisplayPort, and Component-HDMI with it, so you should be good.
@goldeng

Thanks a lot! Very informative! Almost went and purchased one but it might be worth waiting for February 7-10, 2017. According to Magewell website and the first banner that loads, it appears like they've been working on an upgraded unit with 2 HDMI ports! Could be that one of them is for HDMI pass-through. :) Then again the banner also includes a picture of a similar unit with a single DVI port, so it's a bit early to really know what they've been up to...

Are there any other HDMI to USB input dongles/cards out there like this that are cheaper with perhaps less flexibility? Also, didn't see/hear the minimum required specs for this card (if any). I was interested in the Elgato HD60s. However that requires an i5 quad core or higher as a minimum spec. Was looking for something that was a bit lighter on the hardware.

Hey, I liked your review here. I'm trying to hook up a camcorder to our production computer for our livestreaming school news show. This seems like a good solution. Do you think it could handle and hdmi signal that was coming from a switcher if I hooked up 3 camcorders to a switcher and then ran the hdmi out to the Magewell? I'm trying to figure out a way to not have to buy 3 of these with our limited school budget. Thanks for your thoughts.

The Real Noman It works alright, but you do have to configure the picture/vid quality. It does take a bit to get it working to your standards though. When using this dongle, can you just delete the audio portion in video editing software? I have sony vegas. I was thinking maybe I could just use this for video and while recording stream it to twitch in the lowest quality possible so not to lose any internet speed. Then download the video from twitch account and use only the audio. I realize it may take a second to sync. I haven't been able to find a reliable capture device that my PC can handle. I don't have an i5 processor. So I'm trying to find a good capture device that doesn't use much cpu or that doesn't even require a PC. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Love your vids bro. Elgato, AVerMedia make USB 2.0 versions, but they're more gaming-oriented. Generally for high framerate and high resolution, USB 2.0 is actually NOT "more than capable," which is why most capable cards and pro-level solutions are either USB 3.0 or internal PCIe

@@xkahn very appreciated mate. I ended up with the Avermedia HD Gamer 2 PCI card in the end myself and it's amazing also! Camlink and Elgato products aren't worth the hype after some deep dive research. They're like Apple, all shill RU-vidr hype and not really that good. The Magewell and the Avermedia cards or external USB capture cards are far cheaper and better in the end. It's amazing how marketing and how far sponsors will go to make people lie isn't it 😉. The usual attage "but RU-vidrs need to make money still" is just a poor excuse for selling their souls to the devil in my opinion. I'm of the opposing stance where o tell the actual truth as I'm not sponsored and probably will never be as I say it how it is for the consumers benefit and not EVER the companies involved. So yeah great purchase and I'm so happy your solution worked out for you as mine do perfectly in my case as well. Thank you for your reply!

Most likely because the Chromecast probably has HDCP - or encryption on the HDMI signal to specifically prevent it from being captured to prevent piracy.

Some HDMI splitters will remove the HDCP encoding, thus allowing the Magewell to capture the HDMI output. A lot of people use this method to capture game console output that normally carries HDCP on it.

For a camera, I would highly recommend this one or the AV.io HD ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-roeKjOGomQI.html

Why would you recommend that one over the magewell? More expensive, and have to then go from HDMI to DVI to USB - more chances of failure....
@EposVox

Didn't say I'd recommend it over the Magewell, they're both just tools I recommend for the job. Plus Epiphan includes DVI to HDMI and I've never seen any trouble with that conversion. But either one would serve you perfectly for your purposes.

Thanks for the video review! I picked up the new silver version of the XI100DUSB HDMI a few weeks ago. I can't seem to make a great recording with the device. I have tried OBS, VirtualDUB, and the default Camera app in Windows 10. When recording a 1080 signal from a camera all the apps record much lower frame rates. Even if they write a 30FPS file, the actual video is much less. I have upgraded the firmware to x.x.17 but that didn't seem to help. I am recording on a fast notebook (i7-6700, 16GB RAM, 256 SSD, GTX 960 4GB, USB 3.0). Recording a 1080 video should be easy for this machine, but I can't seem to configure the apps to make it work right. Any tips for OBS or VirtualDUB would be great! I think there is no hope for the MS Camera app (although, it records perfect 720P from the built in webcam, but that is crap looking). Thanks!

+Dave Bode I just got the AV.IO HD capture device from epiphan. Since EposVox mentioned vMix software in his review of that device I downloaded it and tried it. It works great! Give it a try. The AV.IO device also appears as a camera. I'm seriously thinking of buying it, it's that good!

+Tony P There was an issue with the firmware on the XI100DUSB HDMI. I messaged someone who left a review on Amazon about it. He said that he had to use a different firmware and it worked. He sent me his firmware, which was a different version of the x.x.17 labeled "bulk", and it worked fine once more. No issues now. Works exactly as it should.

I'm interested in it because I want a good "webcam" for skype etc. The best webcam out there Logitech C920, which I have, isn't good enough in my opinion. It's also convenient to be able to record uncompressed video from a high quality camera directly to my PC's SSD instead of onto an SD card etc. and then have to transfer the files.
@Dirty2D
@Dirty2D 8 лет назад
+Mikael Murstam Yeah, ive tried the c910, 920 and 930, the 910 captures a better picture of my face, like i can see my beard better than on the 930, but the 930 captures more people in a room, so for filming 1 person infront of the camera, id go 910, and for a conference room, where you want to get everybody around a table, i go for the 930. I dont really like the 920, but it has been so long since i tested, i think it had worse lighting or something. But it seems the biggest problem is skype itself, i get a very good image when i use OBS to stream, but i never get it that good with skype. I was also hoping to use the magewell card to use a better camera, but skype does not even try to take the quality it can from it. Going to try that with OBS, maybe some other software to force the resolution to skype or something. But this is also a very small part of my job, so who knows when ill get the time.

This is almost a requirement for my school, stupid skype and skype for business, and the newer version of lync does not support our capture card, this dongle is detected as a usb camera, so it works perfectly with our video conference camera when we want to use it for pc and normal conferences. Skype detects it. Now i just have to find out why the image is so crappy, maybe i have to specify something in our matrix to force it to send a higher resolution out that hdmi port.
@EposVox

+Mikael Murstam I tried using splitcam, but since its for a school, and splitcam gives a personal greetings to myfreecams which is used for porn.... we cant use it, but the magewell card will do just fine, we dont care that much if normal skype has a crappy video signal, but since it works with skype for business, and the camera quality seems very good, i guess you can say we have solved it. But i havent gotten my boss to get them yet, they are expensive, and he wants to exhaust all other software options. So if anybody has an idea.... i tried using manycam, or what its called, it just doesnt work.
@MikaelMurstam

AndreasTube Many webcams have driver settings you can change in different applications that will then be changed in all other applications because it is set in the driver. I think it is weird that you can't get 1080p in skype. Maybe the modern app for Win 10 will detect it. But try setting it to 1080p in another app and then try it in skype again.

Recommend me a capture card (not PCI-E versions) that can pass through 1440p60. It can record in 1080p30, as long as i leave HD camera visual quality. Sth similar to elgato or avermedia. None of which can do what i want.
@EposVox
@EposVox 8 лет назад
You have literally 0 options for non-PCIe for that.
@EposVox
@EposVox 8 лет назад
If you have enough outputs, you can clone your monitor to the Elgato/Avermedia and then change the resolution back to 1440p. You still see/use 1440p60, but then capture 1080p60. See this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xl1XPKlaCOI.html It applies to all capture cards

EposVox Yeah, i had low hopes since i've been scanning the market for long time. I test many PCs so PCI-E kinda isn't the fast way of testing. If i had 1 platform with many GPUs switching in and out, PCI-E would do the job, but not in my case :/ Anyway, thanks! Looks like i am staying on old-school HD camera (recording benchmark runs) :D Otherwise i use shadowplay for regular gameplays.

Hi, I am looking for a device that can record, Capture or download all types of content via Kodi, APKs, sources, Streams, live streams etc. in 1080p/4K, 30-60fps straight from my Android TV Box and save to a SD card/USB/external hard drive etc. Preferably a device able to do these functions and link with a remote. Or even something that can record one or more things at the same time. I've seen the likes of Elgato and Hauppauge but too expensive, plus I get confused with all the specs and termanology lol Could you tell me the terms and things I should be looking for on the devices specs or even any recommendations? Just wondering but I've seen these Multi Channel 1080p HDMI CCTV DVR Recorders, could these be used if could change the software or use additional adapters? Apologies for the essay lol Cheers :)

Sorry to bother you again, I have a possible stupid question. I'm using Display port on my monitor now, if I connect it to the HDMI port I'm guessing it would just be black screen recorded so if I connected it to my graphics card by HDMI would I still get a signal?
@EposVox

You can clone your display to multiple outputs - so have the DP/Monitor your main screen, but then duplicate the same thing (assuming it's 1080p or lower) over to the Magewell on HDMI

I need a software to record video stream from my Magewell XI100DUSB-HDMI HDMI to USB 3.0 Video Capture Dongle. I tried OBS to capture its HD video stream to an .AVI file without success.. I tried some tweekings that would not work. Could you come up with some OBS settings you used that would do what I'm looking for ? I'm looking at 1920x1080 or 1080x720p recorded resolution files that I will edit later in Sony Vegas Pro 13... Thanks.
@EposVox
@EposVox 8 лет назад
OBS Studio does not record AVI files natively, but it can record high quality MP4 H264 files from it, which is what I use. VirtualDub can record near-lossless files from it, but the setup is complicated.

Thank you for your fast reply. But still.. do you know a small but yet efficient video capture software that would recognise my USB video device and would offer some encoding choices (AVI, MP4, WMV, etc..) to a file while recording ? I do not need any stream options, just saving a video file to HDD.

Virtualdub, OBS, Wirecast, VMix, Xsplit, (VLC might do it), Most apps are dedicated to a specific device

Thanks for the reply. Just to clarify I want to use it for gaming like the PS4, and I think you were saying there were audio issues with this that sink it for that purpose. Ideally I want to be playing everything in as close to realtime as possible right through OBS (my situation doesn't really let me have a multiple monitor set up easily). Thanks!
@EposVox
@EposVox 7 лет назад
Oh, those issues aren't a thing anymore. I still need to find a way to update this video - it was either a fluke or I had something set up very wrong. I use it almost daily now and never have audio issues. But the audio issues weren't there ever with the Epiphan unit. I will say that even with a device like this, the couple MS of input lag (still infinitely better than elgato devices or other "gaming" capture cards) still makes shooters difficult to play from the preview. With all devices like this, there will always be some level of input lag.
@Retromancers

Okay thanks. To clarify my situation: I have the new touchbar Macbook that just came out and want to stream PS4 games via OBS in the best quality possible (at least 1080p/60FPS), with as little latency or CPU hit as possible. Ohh, I see. Whichever you can get cheapest between this and the AV.io HD, to be honest. I THINK you might be able to get this Magewell one cheaper, but I'm not sure. They're basically the same card in terms of your end-user experience.
