Magic Johnson spent the summer with Julius “Dr. J” Erving while Magic contemplated entering the NBA Draft. When asked about his experience with Dr. J Magic was very appreciative of the Sixers legend and detailed his reaction when he arrived at Erving’s home: “I’m 19 years old, he’s [Dr. J] flying me to Philly. I get to the crib and he’s got the big house, Rolls Royce picked me up from the airport...I say oooooh I know what I’m doing now.”

I and college friends of mine watched Dr. J's around the backboard shot in 1980. To this day it's easily one of most exciting plays I have ever seen. Every single dude I knew who played basketball was trying to replicate that shot.

Me and my friends watched that shot and it took our breath away the idea that he thought of a way to make that shot clearly call the Lakers off guard. The Lakers did everything right they cut him off with the baseline and he still made the shot legally but illegal to gravity

BTW, that final game of his rookie year is why I call him the greatest NBA player I have ever seen. That's amazing. I'm from Philly, grew up an ardent Sixers' fan. Can't believe Doc had Magic to his home during the playoffs. Makes me wonder how other many stories like this exist that we don't know about. Sadly, I was at that final game 7 mos. later when the Lakers beat us on our home court, right behind the basket. I can see Magic smiling from ear to ear. Great story, thanks for sharing.
