he was a really cool dude. Air force vet, was in a metal band, then he got an English degree and a masters (which is how I know him I don't even play Magic). the dude was living a dream life and he was adored by pretty much everyone. I'm sorry to hear about his passing but Commander format is an incredible legacy to leave behind.

Friendly reminder to everyone that MTG has over 27,000 unique cards, and banning just 4 of them caused this; in a format that was supposed to be about having fun. That's how you know that those cards deserved to be banned. IMO the MTG community deserves everything that they get from this point on. Edit: I want to be clear, I don't think the entire community is awful, its a few loud people freaking out and crashing out over a card game. Most people were mature about it. When I say that the MTG community deserves what's coming, I mean that hopefully it's apparent what was lost and everyone can reflect on how they acted and maybe some people who acted irrationally will learn a valuable lesson. As for everyone else... We should just all be used to dumb people ruining everything for the rest of us, that's life. I also just want to add, its just like the people who lost all their money on dogecoin after Elon went on SNL, no one feels sorry for people who got burned by that. You knew what you were getting into when you bought a single trading card for $150 (it's a printed and laminated piece of cardstock btw). Dumb investors getting burned yet again, imagine my shock.

A couple things, I'm not sure if you elaborated on this live or not but: 1) Wizards didn't *really* yoink control in this opportunity. You did cover that the RC handed control over, but they do a lot in the article to explain that the RC figured they couldn't handle this by themselves anymore. WotC has announced that they will make a "commander play group" that will most likely have former RC and CAG members on it, so it's not completely a power grab, but I'm also weary of what will happen 2) The bracket system was something that the RC talked about making in conjunction with WotC before they announced the system in their live stream later. The RC talked about tools that they were helping to create to help players find more suitable games to their preferred liking. I'm 100% with you on the concerns and financial incentives, but only time will prove that one way or the other 3) A personal thing I guess here, but not every player who was upset about the bans didn't want WotC to take over. I heard multiple people in my LGS on the duskmourn release day draft saying that they really wished WotC would take over. I'm not really sure what goes through their heads, they also mostly worship Elon so they're probably just all gigachads that are smarter than me

People in chat were pointing it out, but the new "power tier" thing is very reminiscent of what Pokemon Showdown does, where they have different tiers with different pokemon banned so that any pokemon is viable so long as you play the right format. It's a pretty cool system, but it's hard to imagine that a company with profit incentives is going to be able to pull it off nearly as well.

With Pokemon Showdown a lot of this is done through just usage statistics and community votes, but put a company in charge and they _will_ try to promote whatever format makes them the most money and make balancing decisions with the same in mind (which we literally see with Pokemon's official VGC format run by The Pokemon Company).

Also according to a very prominent member of the commander community, Josh Lee Kwai, Wizards internally said they didn't want to take over, but the rules committee felt they needed to give it to them because it was unsafe. Atrioc saying they "yoinked" it is not really true from what others have said.

I mean if you want a couple tips on how to play on a budget I can give you some. First off is EDH: playing with a $50 precon is pretty fun and if you find a group willing to do the same you can have some great games. You can also build budget commander decs and some pretty good ones a that. The second good way to get into constructed magic on a budget is Pauper. Its an all common card format which naturally means the cards are fairly cheap. Usually going for 50-100$. There are a ton of fun budget ducks with wild and goofy ways to win so I would check out mtg goldfish budget deck lists. I know that 50-100 still isn't actually cheap but I really think it's worth it to amass a few decs for different formats over time. And plus when your done you can just sell them

A few extra things for context (some of this is subjective, so make of it what you will) 1. Commander is not a rotating format and has very few ban announcements, especially in recent years. A lot of people have the expectation that the cards they buy will be playable basically forever, and it's a huge draw to the format. 2. Mana Crypt being banned was very out-of-the-blue since it's a super old + established card in the format. 3. At the time Jewelled Lotus was printed, pretty much everyone recognized how OP it was, and there was an expectation the RC would ban it very soon after release. The fact they hadn't for so long probably lead a lot of people to believe it was "safe" to buy. 4. Mana Crypt and Jewelled Lotus are pretty uncommon at more casual tables (save for the occasional pubstomper). They saw way more play in tournament commander settings, where they were meta-defining, but not necessarily problematic. 5. WotC has been indirectly influencing the format way more than the RC in recent years, with a constant influx of cards designed and printed specifically to be good in commander (a somewhat divisive trend). Despite not controlling the ban list, for all intents and purposes they're curating the format already. 6. A fan-led rule-0 based format has kind of been unsustainable for a while, as it becoming the "default" way to play Magic means people are predominantly playing pick-up games with strangers at game stores. WotC owning the format doesn't change anything for established friend groups who still want to rule-0, but probably makes a saner experience for the broader playerbase.

There is also some extra context I’ll add as a MTG player. This is the most significant ban in the history of the commander format. Both in card choice, and in the number of cards. Yes, 4 is the most ever announced in one sitting. It’s confusing why they decide to ban these cards when they have been broken for years. Why now? Why all at once? It’s not about seeing it as an investment. Me and my friends have all bought 1 of these cards in the last year or so and we all just feel bummed out and discouraged for wasting the money. It just makes me wonder why I’ve spent so much money on cardboard to begin with. Other hobbies are not this expensive. It’s in the games best interest to stop me from having this revelation. But now we’re all questioning wtf we’ve been doing all these years. Yes, having fun. But we could have just been proxying (printing the cards out yourself from online, for non tournament setting). Many many people I know are thinking of only proxying and not actually buying cards from here on out, which is gonna be a real issue for Wizards.

There’s a lot of important info missing here. In my opinion, the Rules Committee (RC) hasn’t done a great job managing commander, they haven't banned anything in ages and came out with this out of nowhere. While I think Wizards of the Coast (WotC) taking over is worse, let's not pretend the RC was doing amazing. Another point is that this makes it sound like WotC just took control from the RC and introduced this new tier system. In reality, the RC chose to step down because of the death threats they were receiving. The tier system was something they were already working on, and they passed all the planning details to WotC before stepping down.

5:25 I think this hits on why a lot of people, initially non-financially, were sour about these bans. Because 2/4 bans were generally ubiquitous across decks, with 1/4(dockside) being a sort-of auto include in a color, a lot of player’s first big purchase to step up their decks power level were one of these cards, only to learn now they can’t play them. When prominent figures like Prof are always telling players to buy singles, and those singles cost 1/2 | 1/3rd of a booster box price, that’s a big ask, but they could go in any deck, so understandably a lot of players bought the cards. The situation blew up because the above players, who likely had 0 interest in MTG Finance before, are now stuck with a, comparatively, worthless piece of cardboard and an empty deck slot.

As a deeply invested MTG player; Sheldon didn't create Commander, but he was considered the 'godfather' of the format because his championing of it and he was guiding the direction of the RC. Mana crypt was definitely not in "almost everyone's commander deck", because it was hugely expensive. Most players play casually and do not drop $150+ on single cards. It's only the super invested mega fans. And to say that some people had 'hundreds' of them is pretty unlikely outside of a single few investors. The RC approached WotC to take over the format, not the other way around. After doxing and credible death threats, can't really blame them. The opinion on the bans were like 50/50 for people for and against the bans. I don't think it's super likely that Crypt and Lotus get unbanned. The people who dumped their cards would be mad, and it would be sending the message "Send death threats and you get what you want".

Firstly there is this massive projection that anyone who has these cards are "investing" and anyone who bought these cards that complain that something they have paid for has greatly diminished in value is "getting what they deserve". It's a game. I have all three and I never bought them with the intention of them going up in value, I just like to play magic and they are fun cards to play with. This projection that everyone is trying to game rule zero is just not the case. Rule zero has always been used for pre-facing un-cards. It's down to everyone to decide who and what they will play against. Manage what you're going against and not try to start an arms race among your pod. I had these cards in my "competitive" deck that I would play against my friends competitive decks, while playing my much weaker, theme, or pre-con decks against those in the perceived bracket. Sometimes I have expensive cards in my deck that are very powerful, but it doesn't mean my deck is competitive. I've never abused dockside, I think in all the entire three years I've played it I've bounced it back one due to a card I got from another player I drafted during the "Thieves Auction" card. I once gained 11 treasures, but typically 2-5. Mana drain however not only is a counterspell but lets you net massive mana for just two blue. I've countered 8. 11, 12 cost cards with it and won the game the next turn. I've sen people use jeskai's Will to net 11 mana and spew all the cards they exiled. REAL rule zero is for asking your pod if you can play silly cards. People won't let you play a banned card, but no one at any table I've ever sat at has not let someone play their Applejack or Claire d'loon. In my lgs and many others the competitive players have all but given up. We only ever play casually, we preface when we play competitive decks, and I really really enjoyed it. Sadly there is zero confidence that competitive cards at roughly the $80-$200 point are safe, so everyone's just stopped. It seems that these cards were both highly coveted, and many people were complaining about them being too strong, so the rc caved. Now any card you have that's expensive, some indignant player will complain about, imagine if every time someone complained about any card you own just on a price point, you're never allowed to play it again. The One Ring, Agatha's Soul Cauldron, The Great Henge, Sheoldred, the Apocalypse, Dual lands, Force of Will, Cavern of Souls, Teferi's protection, Rhystic Study, Smothering Tithe... Now, even if you don't buy these cards, even if you don't buy reserve list cards... mtg is expensive, however it's always been justified that cards are an asset you can liquidate. They may rise and fall, but commander always felt "safe", because for the most part you could get back what you spent. There's cards you know will drop in value like cards dropping out of rotation or when certain things become available that are better ect. I am not someone trying to make money, nor is a majority of the player base, but if you were told that anything you purchased is guaranteed to be worth a lot less in the future, suddenly a lot of people would stop buying anything "expensive", being a threshold they can't typically afford on a daily basis. For some £10 is expensive, for others £50. No one would buy anything expensive if they knew it wouldn't hold it value at least moderately. Trading cards should hold value, it's a core part of tcgs. Standard is dying because product is expensive and all the cards are almost guaranteed to drop in value significantly, with the requirement to keep buying more. Commander is highly popular because you don't need to worry about rotation, your cards are likely to hold value, and there's a lax ban list so you can play with some cards you otherwise could not (e.g legacy cards ect). I don't invest in a car. I buy it and even though it depreciates, it still has value, it's still an asset. It's especially concerning because the rc have actively said they have a vision for how everyone's games should go. They want to dictate the flow of the game. Commander is sandbox, and that is it's greatest strength. Challenging this core element with bans for a vision is highly concerning. It's also met with inconsistency, as sol ring is unbanned, mana vault is unbanned (there's a whole other controversy with people knowing the ban before hand manipulating the market with these), and mishra's workshop is unbanned. The latter is a $2,000 land that taps for three mana you can only spend on artifacts, but that is a non-existent drawback for decks you play it in. The reason this monolithic card is unbanned is merely because it's highly likely you'll come across it... but what of those that do? Why should someone have grandfather rights of playing with monolithic cards like tabernacle and mishra's workshop just because they are in the upper echelon of deck budget? This is unnerving and unjust. Take a look at the unbanned reserve list cards and tell me that some of them don't deserved ton be banned, even before this one. These cards were given a false sense of security by wizards printing them every premium set and being left alone for the entirety of commander for mana crypt and for over three years for dockside. It was a targeted ban, for a specific demographic and now Wizards have control of it. Imagine if Wizards bans everything and then makes it all "commander standard rotation"? It's a mistake. This is an unjust massive hit economically, and culturally. They were fun cards I'll miss playing.

Man, the prices of magic cards have become insane a long, long time ago. My most active time was when a white bordered dual land was 20 bucks if it did not have blue and 25-30 if it had blue in it. mana crypt was like 12 dollars, force of will was 10, i even owned an unlimited black lotus back then. seemed crazy to pay 600 dollars for a single card, which is why i sold them off sometime. still regret it to this day, but who could'Ve guessed. the prices were stable for soooo long until they weren't anymore. Gaea's cradle was 30 dollars, it's absolute insanity. Had 4 foil grim monoliths, which were like 6 dollars a piece. could buy a friggin house today if i just kept them. Would love to go back in time and just play the game the way it was back then. I just loved it and still do, but it's not the same anymore.

They’re DEFINITELY not going to implement this, but this feels like a much, much crazier version of what Smogon does with Pokemon. For those who don’t know, the official competitive Pokemon format is Doubles, but since most people are more comfortable with Singles, a community body called Smogon regulates singles. Pokemon are separated by tier. You can use any pokemon in a given tier or any lower tier. On the idea that people play to win, pokemon are shifted around in tiers monthly based on weighted usage(weighted by elo). It helps determine what actually belongs in a certain tier or not. This tiered format feels like a modified, worse version of that, and I doubt WOTC will handle it properly.

As someone who plays Magic with a group once a week, I am frankly disappointed in the response from the majority of the community. My opinion has always been that the price it costs to buy a card is in correlation to my enjoyment of the game/deck I am building and playing. It's not a store of monetary value like a real investment, it's a card I own that I play with my friends. The collectors mentality, in my opinion, has gotten way out of hand and is a contributing factor to why singles have become more expensive. Does it suck that you wont make back the money it cost you to buy a card? Sure, but you bought that card to PLAY that card, or at least that's why you realistically should be buying a card. And these bans realistically made sense, Nadu was insane and the other 3 bans were perfectly reasonable in terms of maintaining the spirit of the format. Magic should not be about competition and paying large sums of money to build decks, it should be about having fun with your friends and building decks you think are fun to play.

As an EDH player, i've always disliked the Rules Committee. There have been a lot of bans throughout the years that have made me roll my eyes because the cards in question have never seemed ridiculously strong except in very specific situations. There have been some that for sure deserved the ban for sure; however, I don't think that there should be a banlist for casual edh because its just that. Casual. I think playgroup communication is important to find whats going to be fun for everyone. Thats just how I see it. I've owned cards that got banned before, i play with people that have had card that got banned, and I know people that still play with banned cards in their groups because they agree that the card is fine. And I think that at the end of the day, the CRC shouldnt dictate what your playgroup finds fun. Your playgroup should decide that. And if you bought those cards as investments and not to play with, boo hoo bozo.

A slight piece of context that may be missing here. A major factor in everyone getting so upset over these bans is the fact that they felt like they just came out of nowhere after 3 or 4 YEARS of the RC having absolutely 0 communication with the players. Typically when this kind of thing happens, there are posts about "these are the cards we're keeping our eyes on" and in this case, we got absolutely none of that. Ultimately, yes, the bans were correct for the health of the commander format, but there are some major major reasons why these cards should not have been banned. If you want some interesting content on this whole thing, I'd recommend watching Boshn'Roll, the professor (tolarian community college), or the command zone's videos on the whole thing. They have a bunch of really well thought-out points and they will do a better job in their video than my already too long comment will ever do to give context on the situation.
