I also recommend Tabary's rope routine. He has a two DVD set which teaches his routine among others. It is a modular routine with regular rope and an instant reset. I also love Daryl's Acrobatic Knots. That routine has gotten me a lot of mileage.

the tabary rope routine was one of the first magic routines I've ever learned in general. I first saw it on the world's greatest magic part 4. shout out to those people who got their start in magic by watching those specials... out of all the magic presented in all of those specials.... it was Francis tabarys rope routine and Michael Ammars cups n balls/performance of dingles roll over aces that just fully captured my attention and imagination.. I wanted nothing more than to be able to perform magic like them. I watch those performances over and over and over. I actually learned the tabary rope routine by watching it over and over and over and slow motion LOL. once I met a magician who turned into my mentor did I find out instructional VHS tapes were available to learn those routines did I actually purchase them and learn them properly..... anyway, I'm getting off subject.... the tabary rope routine is excellent. since learning it I've studied lots of different routines creators performers and always come back to that and for what it takes to perform it which is a piece of rope and a smaller piece of rope. combined with how much magic you get from that.... finally adding in how visibly incredible some of the moments in the routine look there really isn't a much better choice when it comes to ticking all the boxes. I highly recommend taking a look at the two volume set of DVDs as well. one final note.... the dude won FISM(the Olympics of magic) with a rope trick... lol. that ought to give you an idea and of itself. just how good the routine is and the effect it had not only people but magicians as well. anyway, awesome video. it inspired me to revisit rope magic.

I have used 1/2” three strand NYLON in a parlour situation. Braided nylon is better, still soft and you don’t have to pay a premium from the magic store. I think your recommendation is the best idea I have heard.

Great sources for "Rope Magic" David. Thanks again for a great video. I started out with "Encyclopedia of Rope Magic" when I first got into magic, and later got into Daryl's rope magic, so I can certainly attest that you selected two of the best sources out there.

I would add Ring and Rope which is almost a whole subcategory. I have routines from shoelaces with finger rings up to doughnut sized rings with full sized ropes. Another favorite is Rope-Thru-Neck, where the rope is wrapped around you neck, the ends are tied together, and the rope is pulled through the neck.

Good discussion on types and sources of good rope for magicians to use. The best rope routine IMHO is Daryl's acrobatic knot, which you mentioned, and which is basically bulletproof, even if you make a mistake. Dan Harlan has a clever version of the Professor's Nightmare called The Awakening which is worth looking at after you have worked out Professor's Nightmare.

Speaking of Penguin Magic, I actually prefer "Cotton Rope, White (50') by Mr. Magic", it's a bit softer than Uday, and just a couple millimeters thicker. In terms of cutability, it's about the same as Uday.

I’ve owned all those books, problem is I’ve never been settled or focused enough to make use of them before I’ve lost them. This the sort of material I wish I would have stayed committed to learning when I was young, these effects they are street gold. I’ve literally watched women melt in the club when my homie hanz did his routine devised from fiber optics by Richard sanders. Anybody got that professors instructions with the under wear? I got two sets no instructions! Smilesotheylikeyou

I'm fond of picking up different ropes with different properties to find the ones that work best for the particular trick 'm doing. You'd be surprised how much difference a different rope makes. For example, there's a trick where you stretch a rope vertically between your hands and then let go with your upper hand and it stays upright until you snap your fingers. That requires a stiffer rope then the soft magician's rope.
