You are a man of culture. Disturbed took a song and made it sound "epic" and all the kids went "wowowow" until they are lucky enough to discover the real deal - the real core and narration of this song. Kids go "why the big audience to hear a cover" - from a TV recording of the Concert in the Park in 1982 in front of a crowd of half a million people - long before Disturbed was even a fantasy in their daddies imagination while growing up in their childhood room. I imagine dudes going up to Paul Simon saying "Wow - you play this song of Disturbed pretty well, old troubadour". Probably after they tell salute Bob Dyland for a cover of "all along the watchtower".

This was from a free concert in Central Park in 1981 in front of 500,000 people (yes 500,000 people). Simon wrote the song in the 60's and this is one of the best and well known songs in the S&G catalogue. They were the greatest folk rock group in the 60s, and while Disturbed's cover was a masterpiece, you gotta acknowledge the boys who originated it.

I think I've heard him say it's different things over the years, interviews being decades apart... I wonder that it started out as one concrete thing but maybe over time the metaphor became more flexible for him or came to represent multiple things. Poetry and all that fancy talk. Or it could be like Carly Simon claiming she doesn't remember who the inspiration was for "You're So Vain," so he just makes things up as he goes? I guess he IS Paul Simon, so he can totally get away with it :)

The 'neon god' that they're 'bowing' to is television. This song is about when television first came out and people stopped talking to just stare at the idiot box, transfixed. That's 'The sound of silence'. This song always makes me feel pretty sad, and tbh, the message today is just the same: our iphones are our 'neon god' now - often we'll sit there staring at them rather then talking to the people around us.

The point is that the silence is a BAD thing. People not speaking out when they should. Not really talking and listening to each other. Following false prophets, etc. "Silence like a cancer grows" because it spreads until society has lost its humanity and compassion for one another, and therefore brings about its own downfall. This song is really really deep. S&G sing it as a subtle warning. When David Draiman of Disturbed sang it, he was singing with anger and rage that this has already happened.

There weren't any touch screen or even fliptop phones in my house. I had never heard of either one if they existed. I must have heard it on the radio. I think America has one of the most heart aching lines of any song, “Kathy ‘I’m lost’ I said, though I knew she was sleeping, I’m empty and aching and I don’t know why”

That entire concert is so great, coming back after all those years. They have a back catalogue that could rival anyone’s. America (makes me cry every time I hear it even though’m Canadian), Homeward Bound, Mrs. Robinson, Only Living Boy in New York and so many other brilliant songs. ⚡️
