That’s why you always do these heuristics when your opponent is searching their library 1 always watch and observe 2 when presented to cut to make sure their face can not see their cards 3 to always cut them about 7-10 times to ensure deck isn’t weaved and to undo a weave. Happy playing

That’s cause (wildly enough) a lot of players are lazy and too trusting of their opponents to want to cut. Some take advantage of that and stack their deck. I had to one time physically tell my opponent (who wasn’t competitive) to always cut the opponents deck. Trust, but verify.

Even at a casual table i ask if my opponent wants to cut. Maybe I'm too competitively minded but the last thing i want is to be unfair or give the appearance of it.

It's essentially muscle memory for everyone at my lgs at this point. Even if someone declines to cut my deck every single time I present it I will still continue to present it whenever it's a casual or competitive event.

@@Lunamowon and? just because its been around for a long ass time dosnt make it less annoying. its a distraction tactic that isnt banned only because its used as a tactic to prevent your opponent from seeing if you top deck,searched,or always had that card in hand. but there isnt a reason for a guy to do it as loud as possible non stop when its your turn when he has only 2 cards in hand. Its just them fidgeting and being a distraction.

⁠@@Lippenholz58it was not made to distract your opponent. It’s original intent is so that your opponent doesn’t know which card you drew when you play them. Randomizing your hand for them has benefits. It’s also just a habit that forms as a sort of repetitive motion that people do when they’re thinking. It’s not that deep bro. Sure it can be annoying if they’re going 100000 miles an hour every second. But that’s not the case a majority of the timr

That person you're playing with is either a friend or will be your friend. Letting them cut the shuffle is the sign of sharing the joy and fun time playing magic. Cheating doesn't make you the winner. It only fills that void in your ego, and then there's that void again even bigger than before.

My friend in high school used to do this all the time. He would rapidly shuffle his hand constantly and “forget” triggers, stack his deck, and sneak stuff into his hand all the time. I never could figure out why he was like that. He had money and expensive cards and strong decks, he just couldn’t handle losing

Even when my opponents don’t want to cut my deck, I instinctively do my own 3-4 part cut. Just to assuage any concern, and so I can never be blamed for top-decking

If it's tournament play you should always cut. If it's casual play and someone feels the need to cheat, they needed the win more than I did.

A friend of mine never presents his deck because he knows he’s not a cheater, but since I play in tournaments and he never does and only plays at home with friends, I’ve been slowly teaching him “you gotta cut their deck and let them cut yours no matter what”

Never once played in a tournament or anything. Highest level of competitive was casual cedh and I mainly play casual commander, but every. single. time. I tutor or fetch or anything that involves me going into my library I offer to cuts. I just thought it was just etiquette, good practice and sportsmanship🤷🏼

Having learned magic as a kid and having a mom who was a card mechanic. I never trust anyone shuffling. I can hide and do anything I want and you will never notice. If anyone is very fluid at shuffling never trust them. Never play poker for substantial money at a home game, they are all cheating.

When I was first starting off we always split the deck (this is when I was 16 playing at school) and id put my best card in the middle of my deck so when they split it I'd get it on top. I no longer cheat bc I got good but still funny memories

You just pay attention to card shuffles and card searching triggers you can usually spot someone chucking a card on top and I'd just cut and advise the opponent that iv noticed you cheating I'll let you go on this one but don't do it again. It should be up to the player to detect and deter cheating and, if he continued, call a judge.

Man, in my casual sunday pod of commander one of our friends got mad at me for cutting his deck. Genuinely upset. So i told him hes free to cut it himself, but he still doesnt want to do it. I am always asking how many cards in hand to him, because at least 1 game a day he will have drawn an extra card. Hes just prone to cheating, and Im trying to get him to break the habits and become more of an honest player. Were all just playing for fun and it really doesnt make sense. I dont know how to go about it politely

It's not s fun conversation to have, but ultimatum his ass, "To the person who is cheating" I know your my friend and I know we enjoy playing games together, in every game we have 3 non winners and 1 winner, it's OK to be a non winner, but cheating at our table is unacceptable, it makes you the real loser, and I won't be playing with someone who cheats, it's unfun to try and watch/supervise you when i could be focusing on my game and playing to win instead of playing to not get cheated. I'm not mad but if this behavior continues I will 100% not be playing with you, do with this what you will. I've said almost exactly this to 2 friends now, i've played for close to 20 years and gotten multiple friend groups into the game, it always surprises people when I call them out for drawing extra cards and break it down why they shouldn't have those cards in hand, we always cut for each other even in casual, it's surprisingly easy to peak at a commander deck and get a card you want in the top 15 cards. Korvold having dockside in the first 15 cards every game is bad, we all agree on this, you might not even be doing it activly but getting a cut takes actually 0 time, and gives everyone at that table understanding that nothing fishy is going on and so you can focus on your game. But 0 tolerance, give him the warning that he won't be welcome to play with his expenive cards if he cheats, and mean it. That's the key, if you give him the normal bro put a card back once a session he'll just do it until he gets caught every time, if you tell him we catch you again and we won't shuffle up with you they will stop or be called out and excluded, either way no more cheating.

To all the replies, some back story is that we go to their house every Sunday to play. They are also brothers with another in our pod, and their roommate is another. So kicking them out isn't really an option. I appreciate the advice. Honestly I thought the sheer embarrassment of catching him in the act of blatant cheating would be enough to make him stop, but apparently not. I just want to be able to cut his deck so his shitty way of looking at his cards while shuffling doesn't bother me as much. Also the extra draws lol

@justincarroll1836 a lot of mtg people don't understand how easy it is to shuffle deceptively. The plastic covers would make it harder. However with practice it would be nothing.
