Magic the Gathering's AMAZING Manga

Man I can’t wait for the 14 year time skip where they want to get married, but the dad goes “If you want to marry MY daughter, you’ll have to defeat me, in COMMANDER!” And the protag will go “Gah! Commander?! What’s that?” And he proceeds to actually kick ass cuz he still held on to his force of will and dual lands.

Not gonna lie, it takes guts to follow up "they try to solve everything with a children's card game" with "feels kind of pokemon-y" instead of the most obvious connection.

The algorithm recommended this video to me and I have to say: I’m glad it did. The editing is simple but effective and pleasant, no visual clutter or random/distracting visual gags or effects. The writing goes to the point, with a brief summary and actual arguments on why this manga is interesting to read. Good contextualization of the manga’s time period and the culture surrounding MTG. And very decent voice-over too: clear, audible, good pace, well-enunciated without sounding unnatural. You’re never monotonous and you convey emotions without becoming too loud or hamming it up. It sounds like someone who talks normally, not someone reading a script. Thanks to you, I discovered a manga that looks very cool, cute and interesting, with the right amount of nostalgia and nerdiness without losing its main emotional core. If I may give a small advice: don’t hesitate to also talk more about the art style and the paneling. I think it’s cool to talk about how a manga tells its story not only with its writing but with its art as well (and how it works in sequential way). Volume 14 came out last week and it goes hard concluding Yakumo's slow burn character arc while avoiding a natural catastrophe. For those who know 90s Japanese rock, GLAY makes a cameo. This manga is such a fun read. If you import the physical manga, they each come with a promo card of a prominent card featured in that volume. For example, volume 14 has a mono-black mirror so the promo is Culling the Weak.

Magic the gathering has at least 5 manga, there's this one - destroy of of humanity it can't be regenerated, wizard's Souls - a parody about competitive magic, The Purifying Fire a story about chandra's life, Magic: The Gathering - Magic Gakuen Seitokai - about kids more causually playing mtg, and Elf Deck To Senjou Gurashi - about a guy who gets reincarnated in a mtg parody and plays elves

To be fair, the duel the guys have because they like the same girl was (spoilers for those interested) a ploy from one of them to play against the other without holding back, and the conclusion was pretty good. Lou's arc, while also handled pretty interestingly, does lean towards duels that are played for ridiculous reasons.

Not gonna lie this manga is what taught me a lot of Magic's history lol. It's very good and very cute, and also got me invigorated for 1v1 magic after being exclusively Commander for so long

I binged the entire series last night in a single read and damn I’m hooked. Thanks for bringing the series to my attention! Haven’t read a manga in yeaaaaars and I love the slice of life aspect of it, and just seeing classic magic cards immortalized

I thought this was going to be about Wizard's Soul, which is a manga that goes the sports route with a romance subplot. The game they play is MtG with the serial numbers filed off.

Once I found out about this, I found an online translation and I was instantly hooked. The story and characters are pretty standard fare, but the level of detail when it comes to the game of Magic and other late 90s Japanese pop culture ephemera is fantastic. (As someone who was into Japanese stuff specifically around that time period, I found lots of moments when I could point and say, "I understand that reference!" So this was extra fun for me. Individual results may vary.) Aside from the funny way everything in the characters' lives revolves around Magic, another kind of silly aspect is that the "good" players basically never lose. Since every duel is a high stakes battle to determine the players' skill and power, the random aspects of the game take a backseat to the dramatized storytelling. Even though it's a romance, it's still more of a shonen book than a fully realistic slice of life story.

Now all it takes is for them to play as a oneshot a pokemon "clone" (its pokemon with the serial numbers filled off) And for that to somehow explode and rival ACUAL POKEMON . No kidding , thats how Yu-Gi-Oh started . it used to be a game of the week , but the one with Kaiba and "not" MTG become so popular and kids asked for how and where to play and it snowballed from there , with the irl ruleset been codified at battle city , a few arcs down the line .

As soon as I ended watching the video, I found out it is about to be published in Spain this same month, and each volume first batch comes with the included promo foil cards (in English, rather than Japanese, aaaw...) Anyway, as someone who has been collecting MtG for almost 20 years, I'm giving it a try.

there is an even better completed manga about magic, wizard's soul: koi no jihad. the story is about the struggles of playing full control, this young girl needs money to pay for the medical fees of her family but the only archetype she knows is full control, it's so funny seeing her play against friends who slowly get more unhinged as she wins only with snapcaster mage attacking.

I actually read whatever was out for this a few years ago. I thought it had been cancelled or the translators just moved on. Glad to see it's still alive and well. I'll have to check it out sometime in the near future again :>

This is what happens when Card Game anime/mangas are following the card release rather than the opposite. We can get an actual story instead of the Mess that was Yugioh Vrains where they were basically fighting for their lives to get people to lose(Soulburner and Blue Angel)

I had a fun idea of what it would be like to have a MTG anime based on the game where it’s like Bakugon where due to supernatural forces the game comes to life. This is probably the best way though and sounds really good.

Funny thing is, the very first MTG manga is actually Duel Masters, yes the actual cardgame Duel Masters was originally at first a MTG manga but at a certain ark in the series it got switched to Duel Masters card game.

Yeah, the only thing this manga lack is the proper recognition from Hasbro that this could be a good advertisement for the game. 13 volume and we haven't gotten any news of it being adapted into an anime is way overdue. And instead of them just making short trailers in anime style, they should just put the money on adapting this series.

I've thought for a while now that a manga series that follows Magic players in the real world, without dipping in the supernatural, would be interesting. Just people playing Magic. I'm glad that concept already exists.

Someone has made an entire video essay about how to make a good card-game-based manga/anime, and the gist is that you gotta treat the game as an actual game, where people play for the sake of playing, rather than defeating evil and save the world in Yu-Gi-Oh!
