The diadem is called a "comb" and is worn in the hair, usually to hold hair back off the face or the top of a bun as decoration. If you recall the story by O.Henry (The Gifts of the Magi) it is what the wife received from her husband for Christmas after she cut off all her hair to buy his gift.
