@@AgendaInMind I'm sorry but not sure of the brand name. Keith at S&K Greenhouses here locally, ordered it for me four years ago when I built the vegetable garden. I know he got it from one of his suppliers and I want to say it was Mize Garden Supply, a wholesale company. S&K does special order it at times for those who want it. it comes in a roll around 12' wide and around 200' long. maybe more. and 4 years ago it cost around $300. Under our current leadership who knows what it cost now but I can guarantee you it "ain't" cheaper. It is great stuff. It's not plastic. It's a woven product that is tight enough to keep weeds out but porous enough to allow good water drain and oxygen to penetrate the ground. Like I said, I've had it on the ground for four years and it looks as good as it did the day I installed it. I'll check with Justin and them at S&K to see what it is and maybe your local nursery can order it for you too or maybe you can order it directly from the manufacturer.

THIS is one of the most verdant, lush, full, abundant, imaginatively designed gardens I have ever seen! Bruce is a TRUE master gardener. Salt.of.the.earth. Whenever I see + hear aboit a marvelous plant in a video, I put a heart at the front & end of it's name (of course I take notes!), denoting to me, "THIS is a plant I have got to grow in my garden!" With videos featuring Bruce Duncan's garden, there're hearts splathered all over the pages. Nobody does it better than this gardener + his, what must be absolutely splendid, other half. (Julie??) Some spin-off videos on the Duncan's preserving the bounty would be fantastic!!

Thank you Holly for the kind words. As far as my soil goes, we have heavy clay but above that is about 5-6 inches of pretty good top soil. So I till up only the top soil. Then above that I add my soil concoction which is composted grass clippings, and any other vegetation I can add to it. And, leaf mold where I chop up fallen leaves in the fall and pile them up and let them compost over a year or so. I take the composted vegetation, add leaf mold to it then spread about 4-6 inches of that on top of the soil that was tilled up. All of that creates a raised bed above the clay so that annuals and perennials don't root into the clay. I don't fertilize bc the compost mixture has enough nutrients as is. Before I replant the next year I will add another 2-3 inch layer of the compost mixture and repeat the process every year.

thank you zsianz1. I'm a Duncan and a family member has traced our lineage all the way back to Edinburgh. They left Scotland early 1700's and wound up in the Carolina's mid 1700's. My line is in the Low Country of South Carolina, as its called. The lower half of the state. If you saw the first video of my gardens I mentioned that my goal is to make it look good in the winter. By using different conifers with varied color, texture and size. Around them are different colored shrubs that maintain their foliage Then I mix in winter annuals like pansies, viola's and different types of cabbage and kale. One of my hero's is Alan Bloom of Foggy Bottom in England. I love winter gardening also, so must be something in these Scottish gene's?

@@bruceduncan1792 Bruce, two questions: How do you keep the weeds out of your flower beds? I noticed you use a lot of pine needle mulch, but do you use anything else? Next, do you have any tips on how to raise so many plants and plant varieties on a modest budget? Plants are so expensive these days. Thank you!!! 🌿
@bruceduncan1792
@bruceduncan1792 10 месяцев назад
@@susanelizabeth5841 susan, it just so happens that Justin, Alex and I just shot a video on this subject. I'm assuming it will take them a couple of weeks to get it edited and uploaded. but let me address a little briefly your questions and what will be in that vid. First, weeds. that is a popular question. some people have a hard time believing this but I have few weeds. and its due mainly to having good soil. weed seeds germinate in poor soil much more prolifically than in good soil. boy, if that's not a good life lesson? I like to compare soil to our attitudes. a poor attitude will attract a lot of life's weeds. I stressed this in both tours Justin has done of my yard. I get good soil by composting left over materials like grass clippings, trimmings from the garden, table scraps, chopped up leaves, etc. there is not enough to say for what composted soil does and one of those is weed prevention. second, I practically, not totally, employ what is called no till gardening. the academic term for this is permaculture. I do not till soil and try not to disturb much. only when removing old plants for new, I dig out the old plant by keeping the spade as close in as possible. weed seeds also germinate more easily when the soil is disturbed. In the upcoming video I explain about my trip years ago to old salem in winston-salem nc where i saw raised bed gardens as practiced by our ancestors years ago. long story short it led me to understand their method was basically no till. when I first started gardening I plowed a field and kept it tilled. always, always having to fight weeds. when I discovered no till methods discouraged weeds and then discovered thru practice that they really do, I will never go back to tractor and tiller method. we will always contend with weeds. just like sin and bad habits. but the key is preventing as much as possible. and when one pops up, don't ignore it, deal with it. every day when I'm in the garden, whether working or enjoying, when I see a weed, I stop immediately and pull it. but the truth is, since employing these raised bed methods, its remarkable how few weeds I contend with. And as far as your other question is concerned, I greatly understand the cost involved, first, start plants from seed. that will save much. don't know where you live and how late or early you can plant, but I start seeds late February to early March here. I keep them in a protected place until I'm reasonably sure no danger of frost will occur. if all you can afford is one small spot, then make that the prettiest one spot you can. don't try to spread things out. figure out what you have to spend toward plants and figure out how many plants you can get. when I used to help people with landscaping and money was very limited, I always suggested buying what you can and work on that one spot of your yard you want to look good the most. I see landscapes so often where plants are spread so far apart that it would look better if they had none. when that spot is like you want, move on to the second most desired spot and so on. If all you can do is one vegetable bed, at least make a go of it. plant a few of your favorite and enjoy. but you can make more of that one spot than most realize. if you have a 4x8 bed for example, build a simple wire fence in the middle and grow climbing plants like cukes, toms, pole beans, etc on it. then use the space underneath for other things. that's a hard question to answer and keep this reply not too long. and not knowing your particular needs, but start from seed and go small if that's what you have to do and then grow from there is my best advice. thank you so much for asking.

If we get a good rain most of my stuff can go a week or so without watering. That is why I keep a good layer of mulch and maintain good soil. Those two things will keep watering at a minimum. Thanks for your kindness and watching us.

I would enjoy having a video on how Mr. Duncan starts a new bed. I love the how the edges are maintained. There is a line of grass with the small gap before he placed the rocks around the low growing flowers. Then a video of bed maintenance and weeding. I would love to know about his mulching strategies and fertilization schedule. Don't get me started on the veggie garden!!!! I would love to see him start seeds, plant, fertilize, and maintain the garden beds. So much talent and an eye for garden beauty. I just love it!

@bruceduncan1792
@bruceduncan1792 10 месяцев назад
keith we plan to do a show on that subject in the near future. all i can say is mulch, mulch, mulch. It prevents so many weeds. not all but it will drastically reduce them. I generally keep a good thick layer of mulch, 3-5 inches, around my plants. I use pine needles cuz I get them free. LOL but generally any mulch is good. Just make sure its a good layer. don't be skimpy. And when the plants get thick they will prevent almost 100% of weed germination by blocking the sun.
@keithtimelessacres
@keithtimelessacres 10 месяцев назад
@@bruceduncan1792 I have found a few tricks with the mulch but we are in a place where I don't think there is weed on earth that isn't growing here. I do use unwaxed cardboard that has helped a lot. Thank you fro the reply.
