This will sound dumb but I have to share it anyway. When I was growing up we read the Canterbury Tales in school. I live in New Hampshire in the the United States and we have a town here named Canterbury. For my entire childhood I thought the story was based on the town in our state (stupid childhood thinking, I know). When I learned this was about a place in London I was crushed but of course got over it. Being able to see this video and put a "face" to the actual city the story was based on was fantastic. Thank you so much for this tour. Free Tours By Foot is amazing.

You may have noticed on the City's Coat of Arms some black birds with red beaks and legs, these are adult Chuffs, a member of the Crow family that were persecuted to extinction some 200 years ago. Farmers believed that they killed lambs but as a carrion species just fed on the carcasses. They are now flying again over the Kentish Downs as a few breeding pairs from Europe have been released to hopefully repopulate the area.

My late sister married her husband from Canterbury. Can’t remember if he was a Man of Kent or a Kentish Man. The middle of Canterbury is actually an island called Burr Island and he was born in a tiny house overlooking the river. I spent my holidays with my sister every year until she passed. Have a lot of family there. All Saints Lane is where he was born in one of the red brick cottages you can see in the video.

Very well presented, with sufficient explanation of what we may be looking at, which is not always the case with other tours. May I suggest, when visiting the Cathedral, people should continue past the cloisters towards Kings School, were they can see ' The Norman Steps ' and as the name indicates, a part of the early Cathedral complex still standing. I might also suggest, whilst visitors are in Canterbury, they take a walk around the ruins of the St Augustine Monastery, an extremely important site of early manuscript production, and the burial site of many of early kings of Kent and members of the clergy, then walking a bit further up the hill to the church of St Martin, the oldest parish church in the English speaking world, and it`s association with Queen Bertha and King Ethelbert - well worth a look :) Thanks ever so much

Just a couple of things. Queen Bertha was already Christian when she came to the Kingdom of Kent as a Frankish princess to marry its pagan King, Ethelbert, in 580. She was commanded by Pope Gregory the Great to use her influence on her husband to aid Augustus of Canterbury to restore Christianity in 596 (Christianity had been one of the religions practiced during the Roman occupation). Also Thomas Beckett was not canonised by King Henry II of England. Popes canonise people and he was canonised by Pope Alexander III.

You forgot to mention that The High Street is one of three continuous streets running through the centre of Canterbury and that, despite being narrow (by US standards) it used to be the main London to Dover road (the A2). This now bypasses Canterbury completely. There is an RAC road sign near the Pilgrims Hospice pointing to London in one direction and to Dover in the other. Also double decker buses used to pass through the Westgate Towers but no longer (I suspect they got too big). For locals Canterbury is no longer the shopping centre it used to be, all the useful shops being located outside the city and replaced by coffee shops, tatty souvenier shops, closed shops (ie Nasons that you stood next to) and phone repair shops. And it's Bell Harry tower, not Bell Henry Tower.

There was such cruelty back then, that people didn’t seem to concern themselves about.

Using the term “CE” is, to be nice, pandering and disingenuous. Why? Because the demarcation line of “Before the Common Era (BCE)” and “Common Era (CE)” is still the birth of Christ. BCE=BC and CE=AD. Please to using these ridiculous terms, they are insulting to everyone’s intelligence whether or not some people want to admit it. Also, this was a terrible job of editing, just well beneath this channel’s normal videos. 🤔

These are the preferred academic terms - BC and AD are no longer in use in academic settings.

@@Marth281 that’s absolutely fine- no one is forcing you to change. It’s personal preference (unless your university department has a style guide on the matter).

@@TheMuseumGuide Academia is no longer academia. It is indoctrinamia. They (indoctrinamia) no longer teach; hence, the term “indoctrinamia”. Just because the academicians says you should do something, should you? No, absolutely not. It’s ludicrous terminology out of indoctrinamia that’s got the world so fouled up. Words are no longer words, they are ways to hurt people who don’t think like they want you to think. Indoctrinamia is responsible for cancel culture and ALL other leftist hogwash. You do understand that the people who came up with this garbage are the pot smoking (not that there’s anything wrong with that), bomb throwing, hippy freak, anarchist, radical atheists of the 1960s, or their direct descendants don’t you? You do realize that one of the first things communists MUST do to take over the West is to destroy religion. The people that came up with this crap are ALL communists. So, I guess you’re a communist then.
