Magna Graecia or Greater Greece was a massive player in the history of not only the Greeks but the peoples of the entire Mediterranean. These cities, founded in response to a myriad of crises within Greece, would go on to establish themselves as a separate but still powerful entity within the Mediterranean and the Greek world. They would export the Greek culture and political systems that would eventually influence the Romans. And their material skills in pottery, painting, and weapon making would serve as models for countless Italians. But how were these cities founded? Why were they founded? What was their relationship with Greece Proper? And why did the area eventually become known as Magna Graecia? Let’s talk about it.

Also I am aware that some of these animations, maps, and so on look a little bit bland. This is my first time doing something like this so this will all change as I get better and better with the various programs and techniques. Just hang in there please!

29% of my dna comes from the northern Campania region of southern Italy and it's well documented that the people's there were the Sammnites,Etruscans,etc and around the 8th century BCE Greeks established colonies all throughout southern Italy. They mixed a lot to dur to the large amount of genetic similarities between Greeks and southern Italian dna from scientific studies

it's a very controversial concept for a non-Italian, but I'll try to explain it, the Greeks who arrived in Italy after a while felt completely Italian, a bit like the Americans compared to the English, this is the right comparison, and they were called italios. and they were very distinct from the Greeks of the Hellenic peninsula among other things, the poleis of Magna Graecia were completely independent and even Syracuse, which was the greatest power before Rome destroyed Athens in the 4th century BC. in the Syracuse Athens war. the origins of Italy are not found with the Romans but with the Italiots, from whom we in southern Italy descend, that is, the Greeks of Italy, who laid the foundations of philosophy, art, science, mechanics, music, etc. Socrates was also influenced by the school of Elea, of Parmenides and Zeno.

These were city- states too like in motherland( Greece') had always relations with their mother cities in Greece - had always civik wars as in Greece and participated in Olympic games - exclusive for Greeks. Their phylosophy and sciences based on their mother cities from Greece or M Asia and many famous scientist- philosophers settled in S Italy from Greece- Archimedes Pythagoras etc

Great video on a topic I have been heavily interested in. May I ask, what sources did you use for your information? I would be interested in checking out the source material for further interest.

Of course, I keep forgetting to put those in the description. Sorry about that! "The Greeks Overseas: Their Early Colonies and Trade" by John Boardman "The Greek cities of Magna Graecia and Sicily" by Lorena Jannelli (might be really hard to get) "A Companion to the Classical Greek World" by Konrad Kinzl (really good book that basically goes over all of classical/archaic Greek history) "Geographica" by Strabo "The Histories" by Polybius "The History of the Peloponnesian War" by Thucydides "The Histories" I,II, and III by Herodotus I think that's about it. You should be able to find the older sources online for free. The others might be a little hard to find, but I think they can all be rented on Amazon (don't quote me on that though). Glad you enjoyed and hopefully you enjoy some of these sources!

Emporia is plural, you don't need to say "emporias"... Also, the singular of emporia is emporion. One emporion, two emporia :)

Greece’s population was 10,000,000 in 500 BCE? That’s what Greece’s population is now. Does that include the colonies?
@VinnieG-
@VinnieG- 9 месяцев назад
from what I looked up around greece itself 1.5 - 3 milion, but all greek colonies together an estimated 4-8 million
@idiottalkshistory
@idiottalkshistory 9 месяцев назад
That includes all of Greece proper along with the Anatolian Greek cities. Sorry should have been a bit clearer on that! Although this is all really just guess work, it's really hard for us to accurately guess populations. Thanks for watching!

Where did you find this number, my friend? There were roughly a million Greeks, and now, with Greeks abroad, there are about twenty million

You are exaggerating the population a little, arent you?😂
@idiottalkshistory
@idiottalkshistory 6 месяцев назад
Actually no! Those are our best estimates for the period. To be fair though it is extremely hard to track population at this point in history so it may or may not be accurate! Thanks for watching!

Typical idiotic comment ,by very uneducated people,only reflects how childish you are go and read Captain Corelli Mandolin, based on a true story,that is why I am proud to say even though I come from southern Italy ,I have 95% Italian dna , and only a minimum amount of Greek dna,

The main source is for that is the Atlas of World Population History by Colin McEvedy. As far as I am aware despite the source being a little old, it's methodology and conclusions are still solid. I should have been a bit clearer in the video on this point but this includes all of Greece proper as well as the Greek cities of Anatolia, Greece proper had something like 4 million while Anatolia had somewhere around 6 million. This all being said, this is all basically guess work as it is extremely hard to calculate population statistics this far back in history. 10 million is a rough estimate, we do know for a fact that round this time the population in Greece exploded and it was that explosion that drove that first wave of colonization into Italy. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!
