I'm sure those coins contained wishes from people that centered around charitable causes. Therefore, put the money to good use and dump it in a charity box, otherwise, someone far less charitable will be along.

There are some people who hoard copper coinage waiting for the laws regarding defacing currency to be reapealed so that they can lawfully smelt it down to its base componants which, as you said, are worth more that the face value of the coin itself. Canada abolished its penny, and many argue that we should follow suit. Although the materials to produce the penny is less than the face value this will change. As I recall the metals cost around £0.005 or 1/2 a Penny, however manufactuering / mintage costs are about £0.007 3/4 a Penny meaning the country creates a net loss. The arguement is that we could round to the nearest 5p instead but critics say the cost of living will go up. This wasn't the case when the country went decimal and abolished the half penny piece.

I think check for special or very old coins that are not spendable. Donate all the spendable cash. The next person that comes along might just pocket it ALL and not help anyone.
