I have a substantial collection of folding knifes, from various Spyderco and Benchmade to Atisan cutlery and Kershaw, and since now I'm holding them in various drawers and plastic boxes, I was thinking about building some kind of a holder/display case/mount for 10 knifes I use most frequently. My idea was to take a live edge piece of plank 1 m x 1 m x 7 cm and make some sort of cutouts with a router that would fit a knife. When forded these knives are around 10x5 cm. I was thinking about carving around 10 of those from the oak plank, smooth it out with a router bit and sanding paper, paint it and voila.. Maybe some kind of short 10 cm legs for the plank to stand on at a certain angle would be cool. Oh yes, did I mention that I'm a complete woodworking novice and I don't own a router, table saw, planer or any of that fancy stuff. I have a press drill, drill driver, some hand tools and a lot of sanding paper... I almost forgot. I don't have an orbital sander either to smooth out the surface, let alone a planer. I'm planning to buy the most basic hand held router for this project so I would be thankful to the grave if you had a go with it and make something like this with a simple set of tools.... Thnx...
It's a great idea. There are tonnes of "how to" videos about the magnetic/block holders for kitchen knives but maybe 2 about the folding knives. Folder has to be on display to be admired too but at the same time easy to reach and take one out. Of course there has to be some beauty beside the practicality.. Give it a go Roman..
Hello . Its Birch , if fallen tree stay some time in forest ( or moist inv.) mushroom bacterials can affect wood , then it will makes patterns. If you want to find one - check local spots who works with birch fire wood , usually they keep birch timber outside , check bottom side.
man, you are really are a perfectionist. I can't understand how come your channel has so few subscribers. just wandering if 10mm magnets are strong enough, some knives can have some heft to them. I'm thinking of a similar solution to hold my Japanese chisels, but I think I'll use stronger magnets, not to risk shooting myself in the foot with a chisel.
Need to test on asembling , but now days its a lot of "super strong" magnets on market so its easy to find what fit to your needs ! P.S. Thank you for great helical head man !
From South Africa-beautiful piece of wood.would struggle to find birch in Cape Town. 2 Questions: What oil did you use? What distance between knife and magnet? I'm struggling to get a definitive answer from a supplier. Planning to use wild olive which is a beautiful wood but as dense as a railway track.
Greetings ! I use "Festool Surfix heavy duty" oil. Its a good product , i can reccomend it for sure. Distance between knife and magnet is depends from 2 factors - power of your magnet and weight of knife what you will use . I strongly recommend you to do "drill" test on wood scraps ( i do it usually ) for my magnets its around 2.5-3 mm. from knife. Best regards!
