During my steelhead fishing over the last few years there have been two mainstay flies, which are almost always on my rig. The Magneto Stone is one of them. I generally fish it as the top dropper on a two or three fly Euro nymphing or Czech nymphing rig but it would work just as well with a strike indictor rig. In addition to a lot of steelhead, the Magneto Stone has also caught resident rainbow trout, bull trout, whitefish, and smallmouth bass for me.
In this tutorial you will learn how to tie this fly as well as some helpful tying tips for handling rubber legs and making a more durable fly.

Love this fly. I’ve been using black lively legz and adding two antennas off the front and it works and looks sweet. Thanks for sharing this pattern with us.

Great pattern! I've witnessed first hand that this fly crushes steelhead!

How's this fly on cloudy days? Goin steelheading for the first time this weekend and it'll be cloudy by the looks of it

Do you ever tie this on a jig hook? If so, you would tie it so that the shellback is on top when it rides hook point up, correct?
@tacticalflyfisher3817
@tacticalflyfisher3817 3 года назад
I haven't tied it on a jig but it would certainly work. I don't worry about flipping the shellback personally. It's harder to tie in with the hook point in the way. There's enough rocking and rolling of invertebrates when they're in the water that fish tend to see all sides of them. I've seen that myself when I've snorkeled.

What weight and length of rod do you use for steelhead. I put together your formula for a euro steelhead leader third cast was a beautiful wild steelhead. Do you have any other info in your master class about steelhead other than using 3 flies? Thanks
@tacticalflyfisher3817
@tacticalflyfisher3817 11 месяцев назад
It depends specifically on where you are steelhead fishing and how large the steelhead typically are. For most larger steelhead I use either the T and T Contact II 10' 8" 6 weight or the Diamondback Ideal Nymph 10' 10" 6 weight. A lot of the anglers fishing the Erie tribs fish 4 weights though given the smaller sized fish.

@@kerrykoerner5128 I used to live in Enterprise, Oregon so those were my stomping grounds while I was a fisheries biologist. I would probably got with either the 6 weight Diamondback or 6 weight Contact II. And I don’t have anything specific to steelhead in our recent content but honestly the only difference in fishing for them is just the gear. If you apply the same principles we’ve taught for trout they cross over directly for steelhead. I rarely found steelhead particularly hard to catch as long as they were present and I could find them.

@@Belbivdevoe unfortunately I live a long way from steelhead these days so a video on it isn’t likely any time soon. My setup wouldn’t really be any different from the trout gear I show in our latest film Adaptive Fly Fishing except that I would use a 10’ 8” 6 weight T and T Contact II and my micro leader would be more like 0.011” thick instead of 0.007”.

@@Belbivdevoe yes. I’ve caught plenty of steelhead that way. The 2 mm trout tippet rings are still fine. They are still stronger than your tippet.

Do you have any hook suggestions to get this pattern to ride hook point up? What kind of rod would you suggest for Steelhead Euronymphing style? Thanks!
@tacticalflyfisher3817
@tacticalflyfisher3817 6 лет назад
You could certainly tie it on a jig hook 10 or larger. I fish mostly with 10' 6 to 8 weight rods when Euro nymphing for steelhead depending upon the size of fish I expect to run into.
@RyltarSB
@RyltarSB 6 лет назад
I'll be using a Syndicate 10' 3 weight rod for general trout fishing. From my understanding that provides about a 5 weight butt section. Reading up on the Echo Shadow II 4 weight, the butt section is supposedly closer to a heavy 6 weight. I wasn't sure if this would be anywhere enough for spring steelhead, although some reviewers recommend it as a steelhead euronymphing rod.
@tacticalflyfisher3817
@tacticalflyfisher3817 6 лет назад
Unless your steelhead are not very large, I would still recommend a 10' 6 to 8 weight

I've mostly fished the Sage X and One. The Cortland MKII is a good new option as well.

Where do you get your beads at and do they have one that will fit a #6 hook
@tacticalflyfisher3817
@tacticalflyfisher3817 6 лет назад
I sell all the beads and materials in my shop at tacticalflyfisher.com The fit of the beads will depend upon the specific hook gauge and size of the bead but most beads should fit.

Do you normally tie this fly so heavy
@tacticalflyfisher3817
@tacticalflyfisher3817 5 лет назад
J Mchugh for steelhead in the northwest yes. Most of the time they are in pretty fast or deep water and to get down with large tippet a heavy fly is necessary.
