I soaked the red pods in water overnight & squeezed the seeds out, but mine are brown instead of black. I placed in a ziplock bag with moistened potting soil to plant after 3 months. TBD
Thanks for this well done video! So I tried with 7 seeds and have one that actually grew. I’m stoked about that, but what I need to know is when do I transplant it and to what or where? Isn’t there a certain age of the seedling that’s best to put it in the ground? I know it should be after the freeze, but should it just go into a bigger pot outside first for a year or so before putting it in the ground? Do I wait for four leaves before replanting? Help!
I put my seeds in the freezer. Do you think this will work or did I mess up? Thanks! I watched this video and didn't remember you said the refrigerator.
+Angie Vaughn thanks for watching! It is possible the seed has been damaged by the freezing temperature. It may depend on how long they have been in the freezer. If they have been in the freezer for several months then the only way to really know is to plant them and see if they will germinate. Here is a great reference on how to propagate magnolia from seed - www.dendrology.org/site/images/web4events/pdf/Tree%20info%20IDS_08_GrowingMagnolias.pdf.
Thanks for watching! We have received several viewer responses of their little magnolias sprouting after this process! Give it a try yourself and keep us updated with the progress!
Amazing! Thanks for sharing! Once I've forgot an almost gone onion in a ziplock bag in the fridge and when I was cleaning all, I found her with a bunch of roots! Of course I planted and worked for a little bit and fast! Now I got this "pine cone" from the floor of my condominium and there is a bunch of seeds! Will do the zip lock like you show and hope will be the same!!
Are your seeds white after cleaning? Mine are... His was black but he wasn't cleaning the southern Magnolia seeds. I'm trying to find out if white seeds are normal or if they won't grow.
Refrigerator or freezer? I've seen both on various sites. We have a very large magnolia producing seeds currently. I found at least two pods putting out red seeds with more on the way. As a side note my mother used to freeze tulip bulbs and grow them in pots inside in the dead of summer and winter as well . Blooming tulips in August and January at times.. Always kind of cool..
Thank you for this amazing informative video! I have different specifies and have been wondering about seed propagation. Can you skip the refrigerator if you live in a cold zone? I am zone 6b. Or do you start them in seed trays and transplant in the spring after danger for frost is gone? Thank you so much!
Excellent video!! I’ve just pulled my seeds out of the refrigerator and am potting them up. Can I put them under my grow lights or will sunlight from a west facing window suffice until I can get them in the ground?
@@jshepherd37066 Hallo from Slovenia! I wonder if you have received any answers to your question. in early spring I have grown 22 (out of 33) seedlings originating from Greece . They are not equally strong but the biggest have 4-5 leaves and are several inches high. What to do with them during their first winter?
MyRU-vid Hello from Arkansas! My magnolias are still in pots with about 10 leaves each. I only started with 3 seeds and 2 are going strong. They survived an infestation of hungry baby rabbits this past spring and are growing nice and straight. We are at the end of summer and I still don’t have an answer about what to do with them during winter. I’m thinking I’ll put them in the only south facing window we have which is in the garage. Keep me updated on what you decide to do! 😀
Hallo from Slovenia! I have grown 22 (out of 33) seedlings originating from Greece . They are not equally strong but the biggest have 4-5 leaves and are several inches high. What to do with them during their first winter i.e. in a few months from now?
ok so if they have to be in the fridge for 3 months? then ok I went and I got about 100 red seeds for a nearby tree..today is October 1,2019...but January is the 3 months...so your saying that in January I am supposed to plant these? We are in Louisiana where it will still be cold..so do I keep them inside until spring time? I am a lil confused but I am trying to learn this..please answer thank you.
I'd pick em in middle fall. Right now I'm in late fall here in texas, if I started right now itd be ready by March. I'd go with how your state reacts to how to seasons change.
Hello oooooooo!! Mr.Owens..I have a problem..My seeds came from the southern magnolia tree..ok so I soaked them in water over night..BUT HEY My seeds are not black!! Thay are like a yellow color..whats wrong with them?? Please reply..Thanks
Aquarella Azobrab I just asked this too and I think I found the answer. Supposedly the southern magnolia variation seeds are a little bit lighter colored
I think I have the Southern Magnolia... The seeds are on a pine cone like structure. When the red and orange is shucked from the seed, the seed is white, not black. Is that an issue?
No problem - probably a different kind of magnolia. I also had white seeds and after spending 3 months in the fridge this spring I gre 22 out of 33 seedlings. But do not know what to do with them during the first winter. I feel they are not strong enough for planting outside. 4-5 leaves several inches high
Steve, I have a Elizabeth Magnolia Tree that is about 8 years old and about 8 feet tall but the cones that fall off of my tree are small, more like the size of your finger but I have never seen any seeds bulges from them. I have broken one in half to see what it was when I first noticed them a couple years ago and I do see tiny black seeds in them like a kiwi. Do I have to dry them first so they pop open by themselves or is my tree just to young to produce really good seeds?
Sharon, I would take a fresh cone and set it aside for a few days so it can dry. After it dries it should open and can have shake the seeds out. Also the colors of the seeds when you first see them should be red so they may not be ready quite yet. They can take up to ten years to bloom.
@@roxyqueen5076 are you talking about an Elizabeth magnolia or one of the other ones. Right now I have no seeds on my Elizabeth . If your seeds are yellow I would say they're not ripe enough to pick off the tree. Leave them on the tree till they pop open.
