Theres someone who has combined a model ski lift with skiers on a magnorail system, the skiers apear at the top of the slope from under the lift and ski down on the magnorail into the bottom station of the lift, they then go up under the scenery to the top station, looks very effective but apparently required two motors because of the steepness of the slope
That would be right David. It is all about physics of friction, torque and magnetism. The Magnorail motors engage the chain links via rubber O rings apply the motive power
As the power is relative to the drag being applied to the chain by track magnets pulling skiers or vehicles onto the track this limits the length of the track and number of units on it. More motors = more torque = longer track or more units. You can have multiple motors in a parallel chain to have a run that it is both long and multiple turns ( which also chew up the energy needed to move the chain.) so Magnorail magic is possible with multiple scenarios - that layout ski run is in my Magnorail movies playlist - Clyde - MagnorailOz
NgoNam Lau Hi - you can use diecast vehicles as long as they are fairly freewheeling, if they are heAvy you can add another magnet to the sliders or even attach magnets directly to the chassis as long as they don’t touch the road surface. The beauty of the Magnorail System, unlike Faller Car System, is that you can animate anything with wheels up to O scale and down to Z. The N scale landcover at the start of the video (Time track 0:21) has a track magnet on the front, but since this was done over 7-8 years ago, you can now get more customised Neodymium magnets in smaller sizes - round or square, which would make them less obvious. We also recommend that you place them on the Chassis on centre or just behind the front axles so they turn corners realistically. -also a second magnet further down if you are going to use the return loops so that the vehicle follows the track around the corner rather than drag it around. Magnorail is scale agnostic - in other words the vehicles on top can be from z scale to HO. As to O scale, I would imagine that the vehicles would have to be reasonably light and freewheeling and would need a stronger magnet on the slider. Regrettably the bicycles are only available in HO scale. No at this stage it is only available on line or in Europe hobby shops - I have done USA deliveries without any problems but starter kits are out of production at the moment and I have sold out. The new owners in France are hoping for stock to be moving again by the end of February - thanks for subscribing
Basically boats and canoes etc are easier as they actually contact the surface directly. A velour velvet on the crafts bottom will reduce friction. Once again a larger neodymium rare earth magnet should provide the “sticking” power but it is all about physics - the heavier the craft the more power and grip needed to move it. I would not recommend putting a fleet of O scale boats on the Magnorail System as it is powered by 2 x O rings gripping the track as the motor turns and too much tension by stressing the pulling power would make the system slip. However 3 or 4 canoes would probably work. I use Preisser models and adapt them with either MagnorailOz sliders or magnets in the topside of the hull of craft.
This is an N scale layout so the incline is not that steep. That said, Magnorail doesn't worry about inclines as the vehicle will stay on steep inclines, purely because of the strength of the magnet. You will notice the shiny block in front on the landrover which is a Magnorail track magnet 3mmx3mm which is quite strong. You can have over 50% incline with the strength of this magnet. The danger point is more when you transition to a flat surface, that it is not too sharp as whilst the channeling and links are flexible they have limits, so the option is to bend the chain so that the links do not rise out of the channel.
