The ongoing COVID-19 crisis has resulted in most Magnum photographers being restricted in their movements.
As part of a broader photographer-led response, a new series, Quarantine Conversations, will see Magnum photographers in frank, and unedited dialogues about work, current affairs, and everything in-between. The pairings for these conversations will be made by lottery, and this latest installment sees Jim Goldberg ask three key questions of Moises Saman. Jim and Moises talk about closeness in distant times, taking risks, Magnum as a tool for inspiration, faith, self-doubt, the meaning of a good image in conflict photography, nightmares, and fatherhood.

I love these conversations. This one made me realize that all photographers deal with similar issues like self doubt, being repetitive, comparing ourselves to other photographers, etc. It was great getting a glimpse into both photographers lives. I liked them both for being so transparent and vulnerable with each other. I loved their humanity.

I hope these guys realize how lucky they are. I know I am every bit as good as the worst Magnum Photographer on a bad day, but my chances of getting into that agency and having the opportunities these guys have had are a billion to one. I work my ass off. I have put out a ton of work, been published in major mags and papers, I was the photographer for a best selling book about vegas storm drains. I have been doing this for 23 years. I survived alcoholism, a heroin addiction, and the mental illness that plagues every day of my life, but I can not catch a real break. I can't listen to these guys complain when they have no clue what it is like to be a great photographer who is also a line cook. Not because I love it. Let them feel the shame of your 22-year-old coworkers laughing at you because you are nearly 42, no car, a studio apartment, and the nerve to call yourself an artist as you carry that camera everywhere. They taunt you with, "why don't you have a canon if you are a pro? What's a Leica? It looks like something from my granddad's attic." Hell, I feel fucking stupid complaining about my life. This makes me feel like an ungrateful fool. So, yeah, I can't listen to these guys bitch, even if it was just a second of this post, still, I would do anything to be where they are. To have an audience, to know that what you produce has a chance; eyes will see it. Oh well, I'll keep trying until I can't.

I am sorry you seem to be dealing with so much pain. Jim Goldberg isn't really the tree to be barking at though bud. I hope things have gotten better since you've written this comment. I too am a photographer not coming from much, no college education, have narcolepsy amongst other mental and emotional challenges, and have worked as a farmer, a line cook, and primarily bartend these days. Take care and keep photographing because you love it.

Moises is so bad interviewing! I had to leave cause I couldn't stand him saying "you know" once more.
