Magnum is great! But it is heavy metal in my book (which is good!). I would recommend the song "Soldier of the Line" from the Chase the Dragon album (with cover art by Roger Dean, I believe). Another great album is On a Storyteller's Night 👍🏻

Magnum are awesome. I suspect you'd quite enjoy quite a lot from their first 4 albums - not that the later stuff is bad at all. They're kinda like Styx. Late 70s/early 80s pomp rock band with progressive influences. If you wanna check out some more Magnum I recommend The Spirit, In The Beginning, The Great Disaster and How Far Jerusalem.

Always happy to hear Magnum. Fondly remembered underdogs of the British rock scene of the 1970's and 1980's, and this track was from just before the band achieved a commercial breakthrough. It's not the track I would have chosen as an introduction to Magnum, but I'm sure other people know more and are more passionate about the band than I am, so I'll leave the track selection up to them. This I liked, Tony Clarkin may have been one of the most accomplished writers in the rock genre, but I think it suffered a bit in the production.

Yeah I went out on a limb recommending this one, but I reckoned Justin would like the harder style and I was right. For myself, I like the raw production before it went polished.

@@pentagrammaton6793 It wasn't until Just Like an Arrow that I started taking notice of them, although I'd always known the name, so the earlier material, apart from Kingdom of Madness is largely undiscovered country for me. I saw them at the NEC on the Wings of Heaven tour, which was probably the biggest night of their lives at that point, so I have fond memories of that.

@@delorangeade try Chase the Dragon as well. 🙃

"On a storytellers night" is the album I'd suggest as an introduction to Magnum. They were a great live band. Saw them as the opening act at the Monstrs of Rock festival 1985, and they were awesome, upstaging Ratt,Bon Jovi and Metallica ( with Cliff Burton)......this was however a tame introduction.

I love On a Storyteller's Night, but it's a soft album. This rocks by comparison.

@pentagrammaton6793 yeah I have to agree On a storytellers night is a soft album....I just think the production, songwriting is exceptional....How far Jerusalem.....classic.

Hmmm, wonder how many times I suggested Don't Wake the Lion from these guys over the years...(in the end I gave up and - shameless plug - started my own channel to talk about them and all sorts of other things most channels don't get around to!). As a first song to listen to...well, it's a better choice than your Toto selection, I'll give it that (Ahem, cough, cough WHITE SISTER!! :P). BTW Magnum released their 23rd (and final) album, Here Comes the Rain, earlier this year - Tony Clarkin (guitarist, producer and songwriter) passed away a few days before it came out- the rest of the band are doing a handful of tribute shows to Tony in the new year but otherwise they are done. But what a catalogue of albums they've left behind...

Why, thank you very much! Yes, I have a (high quality) AOR streak, I admit it...it was either this or Soldier of the Line, and this won out. The Eleventh Hour is their best album, probably. 😀🙃

Hey! Mr and Mrs Grammaton had a child and called them Penta! Who knew? Meanwhile, Magnum - I've always been tempted by their record covers (and their ice cream) but usually resisted. This is OK but didn't walk on water.

Magnum very high quality songs consistently. Soldier of the Line, and the title track of On A Storyteller's Night are superior to The Prize, as decent as it is too.

Never heard this lot. Stayed away until now.....Goodness. It's not wot I expected. Saga Do it better. or that City Boy band eh? Sound like a Welsh Language Spinal Tap. High Fun Factor with Cringe Potential Aplenty. But yep, they Wok't The next song sounded more heartistic. No JP, u nailed it. It's Eye of the Tiger by Survivor in an English Costume Adaptation

I don't like that stuff at all.🥱 It's pedestrian arena rock at its most basic, just like a lot of other bands were doing at the time! I'll pass...⏭
