I am going to see if the carb from my ASP 46 or OS 40 SF fits this engine. If one or both do I will run this again with those carbs to compare.

Hi David, I currently fly an older model of this engine, the Magnum XL 40, it is a very reliable and powerful engine, with a good idle and reliable transitions from min to max revs. I bought it brand new on Ebay last year. I run it on synthetic fuel with 5% nytro with OS Max 8 plug. Great engine! Basically, I essentiallyI start it by hand! 🙂

It was just such an engine that cost me my old Arising Star trainer 20+ years ago. Never could get a perfect tune out of this engine, no matter what we tried, I can remember...

Great engines with les than ideal carbs, but once low speed needle dialed in they run like a champ, just suscribed to perky planes.

Hey David. Cool Run. Here's a trick starting with No Spinner. Turn the Rubber Cone around on your starter and put in the Crank in the Opening. Easier

Uh yes that is how i had it. Been using starters for over 30 years.

Always nice to see a skilled person work with these engines. Take care of your hands, i slipped bad once with an OS 46SF and got astonised 26 stitches in my fingers. But anyway nice video to watch. Greetings from Sweden.

Awesome! Thanks for the run. Sounds pretty good from what I can tell. Every once in a while I will hear someone say if you got "Engine xyz" avoid their carbs... Not very often but occasionally. I know very little about Magnum and I am still relatively new to glow anyways. So perhaps certain Magnums like this XLS fall into that category as well. Thanks for the shout-out again as well. I did find out that they have lowered subscriber count for monetization to 500 subscribers which is not bad... But watch hours are set pretty high for where my channel is. But honestly, I have been churning out a lot more videos this year and hope to continue that trend. 🙂

my gms 47 was behaving very similarly while on the test bench, i found and old OS 4A (2) airbleed carb from an older OS MAX-H 35 and i got it tuned way better within 30min of swapping out carbs compared to days of fiddling with the OG GMS carb. i also have little to no experience working with twin needle carbs before my gms. i paid less for the engine than I would have paid for a new 3s lipo so i shouldnt complain as much as i have already. David have you ever checked behind the inlet nipple to inspect the hole/gap alignment going into the spray bar? I can clearly see a huge difference between the GMS and the OS carb, I think the fuel flow at WOT is affected, I have yet to do any work on the gms carb, so i may be wrong i'm still learning so i stand to be corrected.. Why would i want a twin needlle carb over an airbleed? more chance deadstick when upside down? I can only guess i guess

Why are so many folks so scared of a deadstick? Twin needle carbs have more precise tuning capability over airbleed carbs. Two stroke airbleed carbs adjustment screws are also much closer to the prop and more dangerous to adjust while running. Many airbleed carbs like Enya, are very sensitive to varying humidity. The airbleed carb is adjusting the air ratio for mixture whereas the twin needle is adjusting fuel volume, thus less impacted by weather conditions.

@@dmrcflyr2 Thanks so much for clearing that up for me. I still have to take my glow maiden flight. The deadstick boogieman they talk of in forum posts have me being overcautious. I started flying thermal gliders and slope soaring before i even had a throttle stick, let alone a dead stick. this maiden is delayed by about 20 years, my trainer is gonna fossilize soon
