In this particular game, it was the ending that decided the outcome of the game, not the opening. The last exchange where he gave up his two minor pieces for the rook and a pawn, living him with two rooks and two extra pawns against the rook, knight, and bishop,. That's the real deal!

I was thinking the same, but black would have Qb4+ attacking the knight on e4. If the bishop blocks then black takes the knight on e4 with check, winning a whole piece; if white blocks check with the knight then black would win the pawn on e5; if the queen blocks then black can trade queens first and then take on e5. So white loses a pawn at best. Edit: Btw I assume you meant d5 lol

Nd2 comes in and he only gets measly b2 pawn. Applying pressure on d4 is much more potent in breaking up the centre.
