Shikhandi is a pivotal character in the Mahabharata, known for their unique role in the epic and their involvement in Bhishma's downfall during the Kurukshetra war. Shikhandi's story is one of transformation, revenge, and destiny.
Background:
Shikhandi was born as Shikhandini, the daughter of King Drupada of Panchala, who was also the father of Draupadi. Shikhandini was actually the reincarnation of Amba, a princess who had a tragic encounter with Bhishma during her previous life.
Amba's Story:
Amba was one of the three princesses of the kingdom of Kashi, who were abducted by Bhishma to marry his stepbrother, Vichitravirya, the king of Hastinapura. However, Amba was already in love with the king of Salwa and expressed her desire to marry him. Bhishma respected her wishes and sent her back, but the king of Salwa rejected her due to the humiliation of being defeated by Bhishma.
Amba, heartbroken and filled with rage, sought revenge on Bhishma. She approached several warriors, but none dared to face Bhishma, the invincible warrior. In despair, she performed penance and sought help from Lord Shiva. Shiva granted her a boon, assuring her that she would be the cause of Bhishma’s death in her next birth. Thus, Amba was reborn as Shikhandini in the kingdom of Panchala.
Shikhandini's Transformation:
As a young woman, Shikhandini was determined to fulfill the destiny of her previous life and be the instrument of Bhishma's death. However, Shikhandini realized that as a woman, she might not be able to participate in the war or exact revenge on Bhishma.
During a series of events, Shikhandini encountered a Yaksha (a nature spirit) who agreed to temporarily exchange genders with her. Thus, Shikhandini became Shikhandi, a male warrior. In some versions of the story, the Yaksha's curse made this change permanent, and Shikhandi lived as a man for the rest of his life.
Role in the Kurukshetra War:
Shikhandi’s most important role came during the Kurukshetra war. On the tenth day of the battle, when the Pandavas were struggling to defeat Bhishma, Krishna advised Arjuna to use Shikhandi as a shield. Bhishma, bound by his own principles, had taken a vow not to fight or harm women. Since Bhishma still recognized Shikhandi as Amba, he refused to engage in combat with him.
Taking advantage of this, Arjuna, with Shikhandi as a shield, rained arrows upon Bhishma. Bhishma, unresisting, was struck by multiple arrows and fell, marking the end of his participation in the war. Though Bhishma did not die immediately, Shikhandi's presence ensured his defeat, fulfilling the prophecy of Amba's revenge.
Symbolism of Shikhandi:
Shikhandi is often seen as a symbol of gender fluidity and transformation in Indian mythology. Shikhandi's story emphasizes how destiny and personal resolve play crucial roles in determining the outcome of events, even for the greatest of warriors like Bhishma.
Shikhandi also represents the themes of reincarnation, revenge, and the power of a determined soul seeking justice for past wrongs. The story of Shikhandi reminds us that karma, destiny, and personal actions are intricately linked in the Mahabharata's universe.
