When I heard Mahalia For the first time, I was 14 years old, and the song touched me so deep, and I cried so much. And Now I´m 48 years old, and I feel the same. God Bless this voice!!
I cant watch this without crying, and I've spent over 17 years in prison; twice for bank robbery! All praise and glory and honor belongs to God. You know I've been changed! I'm an old ex-convict crying grateful tears of joy!
Yes, Mahalia was a beautiful woman! Very beautiful! Have you ever noticed that in her later years, she looked younger and in her younger years, she sometimes looked older?
You could see that too, to live during that period for African Americans must have been hard. I think that's why her songs envelope you in God's presence. Thankful for the faithful ones who pioneered the way!!!
Without a song the day would never end Without a song the road would never been When things go wrong a man ain't got a friend Without a song That field of corn would be deserted now That field of corn would never see a plow A man is born but he's no good no how Without a song I've got my troubles and woe But as long as I know Jordan will roll I'll get along, 'long as a song Is strung in my soul I'll never know, what makes the rain to fall And I'll never know, what makes the grass grow tall I only know, there ain't no love at all Without a song
In my opinion Ms. Mahalia Jackson is the greatest singer of my time. My mother loved listening to her gospel hymns. I still get chills when she sings. The new artist from UK Noah Stewart has done a very good interpretation of this song. No one compares to the great Mahalia.
Thank you for sharing your memories of your parents, this wonderful song, and Mahalia Jackson. I am 59 and without question, Mahalia was the greatest singer in my lifetime. I hope before I die, I hear someone who equals her magnitude in voice and in spirit.
Yes,sometimes she does look older on some of her dvd's but, She's just a beautiful great Lady old or young. I watch youTube all the time looking for videos or tapes that I haven't seen of her and there are many, I really enjoy and appreciate the ones I've seen. God Bless! montellia60
Coming from a family of worship leaders, this will be a permanent fixture at our gatherings during going home services. Never heard this song before. We'll have to play Mahalia she's the only one that can do it justice
Bless all of you. I agree with every comment. God blessed her with that wonderful instrument and she used if splendedly. The world is a better place because she shared that beauty with us all.
Exactly how these beautiful words should be sung. So much emotion carried forward from years of experience. Not too much, not too little. ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL.
mahalia jackson has been my angel of music for years and this performance is the reason why. i wish i could have been born around this time to meet this lady face to face. luv u ms. mahalia. =)
What's so Amazing about this performance is that Mahalia leads the orchestra. They follow her. She takes her time like a gospel number. Amazing. And they do follow her
Yes, this is one of my favorites as well! She sings "Come On Children Let's Sing" twice, but the second time she did it (as an encore selection), she points to the drummer, telling him to play! I have this footage, as well as the actual audio recording from this event. Just wonderful!!! Thanks for sharing!
there ain't no god at all without Mahalia, grew up listening to here every Sunday morning on the radio. A show, Jazz goes to Church out of Chicago. They would always end the show with Mahalia singing Come Sunday. Does anyone have it? Please post it and make an old man happy.
OMG !!! ... I am Absolutley In tears over here !! .. I HAVE never even seen footage clips of this performance ... Whoever posted this ... I LOVE U !!! .. God Bless u ... please dont ever delete it !!
I've never seen her this small before, She is beautiful.( She was a beautiful woman anyway fat or thin) Her eyes have always been haunting(they seem to see right through you) they are even more so here. I love this tape and thank you for it. montellia60
I love this. A wonderful meaningful song expressed by a wonderful woman of God. I love her interpretation of the song. Her gospel twist on the song puts it right up there with other modern hymns. Just beautiful!!!. Thank you for posting it .
Yes, from what I read about her, she is preparing to worship before The Lord!!! Awesome praise and beautiful testimony, how amazing, to take a secular song and worship!!!
there are no words that can truly explain this moment Ms. Jackson sang this song... there was a transformation, transition and transportation that only she was allowed to experience...we as listeners only caught a glimpse and only heard beauty at it's birth....
In 1971, Elvis was named one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men by the United States Junior Chamber, or the Jaycees ; his speech was : " I learnt early in life that WITHOUT A SONG the day would never end Without a song the road would never bend When things go wrong a man ain't got a friend Without a song " The King loved Gospels more than whatever , all his fans know that ... Kisses to Mahalia : I love her too !
I think at 4:00 she caught a glimpse into the spirit and it carried throught the rest of the song because I know at 5:15 she is in the spirit that is no earthly look!
@goddyc she sang for that good and great spirit--it didnt matter what you named it--some people did not speak English--she was performing this concert in Germany
Great! Easily the greatest performance of its kind that I have ever seen--actually I have never seen anything like this. I'm a hard person, and I had to fight back tears while watching it. It's so moving! Thanks so much for posting!
she was beautiful indeed. it's the LORD JESUS shining thru her . i can hardly wait to see her in person... i know it will not be much longer. ( i do not mean to imply that she was ONLY beautiful from the inside....)

Wow ! I know I've already commented but I just want to know what else did she sing on that video/tape? Are you able to send more from that 1967 live? Hope so. montellia60
I've noticed that !!! ... I really think it was the weight though .... after she slimmed down ... she looked much younger ... and the glamoursih costumes that she put on in her later years only added an extra touch ... But she was definetly a beautiful woman !! and I love it when she wears her hair like this instead of that fan roll thing ... but women actullay started wearing that style after they saw Mahalia with it !!
