Rahul Kadakia, Christie’s International Head of Jewellery, introduces some of the many storied pieces from an incredible collection of royal jewels and jewelled objects that’s set to make auction history.
‘This is living history in your hand,’ says Rahul Kadakia, International Head of Jewellery at Christie’s, of a stunning trove of jewels that date back nearly 500 years to the early part of the Mughal dynasty, which ruled in India from 1526 to 1857.
India’s rich culture of jewellery is partly the result of natural circumstance. The mines of Golconda yielded the highest grade of diamonds; Kashmir produced the rarest and most beautiful sapphires; while the greatest emeralds arrived in India from Colombia through commercial exchange via the Portuguese-controlled ports of Goa.
Jewellery in the Mughal tradition was an integral aspect of articulating authority, with eyewitness accounts from the height of the Mughal Empire revealing the extent to which rulers valued gems for their rarity, physical properties and provenance.

You do realise that this is a collection of jewels owned by people from around the world that are being displayed in an exhibition in England? No? Because you are ignorant and the first thing you do is jump on the Colonial bandwagon. MOST of the ‘private collectors’ of these jewels are in the Middle East, in Russia, some in America and a lot in India. In the meantime as far as Colonial ‘Plunder’ is concerned, you have the lot back and in return we will have the hundreds of millions to the point of trillions of pounds of aid back that we have poured into India for bloody decades in an attempt to lift YOUR POOR out of Squalor. You are the biggest democracy in the world yet are utterly helpless when it comes to kids living in the streets, helplessly corrupt politicians and filthy rich ‘businessmen’ who do not give a shit about their own people. As for us Poor British I’d suggest you check out our history and what we have actually given to the world. We don’t need your fucking pity. What the hell have you contributed to the modern world or the progress of human beings in it? Absolutely nothing but you have perfected whining about something that was over nearly A CENTURY ago and getting out the bloody begging bowl as soon as somebody mentions it. You can thank Indira Ghandi for that. We left India politely when asked to,without bloodshed so you could ‘run your own country’ and what have you done with it? It’s still a steaming great shithole where little girls can’t walk around the streets safely for fear of being gang raped and murdered by psychopathic male bullies who despise women. And you STILL expect us to support your poor. We have only recently stopped giving Aid to India when it dawned on our politicians that you arseholes have a space programme yet you can’t look after your own destitute women and children. Poor backward bloody Indians who can’t lift themselves out of poverty because of a medieval mindset that is terrified of equality, progress and change. You can’t even get rid of your caste system. It was outlawed legally and in the Indian constitution in 1948 yet everybody still practices it. Despite it all you are proud of geological rocks and metals that come out of the little patch of land you happen to live on where they occurred naturally. You didn’t have to invent anything, you didn’t have to create anything yet you talk,about the ‘honour’ of naturally occurring metals and minerals as if you, personally created them. You need to bloody well grow up, stop blaming other people for your poverty and look to your own corrupt politicians and businessmen and ask them where all the money is.

I know I’m late but I definitely agree. This was only a few years ago, I’m still a bit young. But I remember visiting the shops in Hyderabad , they looked simple on the outside, yet so luxurious inside. The tons of jewels there were really eye catching. Still remember it, it was beautiful
@jsmith3980
@jsmith3980 2 года назад
@@jangablocksjanga yes modest on outside unlike in Europe/USA. One of the shops [Mullaladil?] made the jewelry for the Nizams. Golconda diamonds[as you know] were the' first' diamonds in the world ....long before the Nizams.[My ancestors are from Andhra Pradesh and Hyderabad and I adore the area].An interesting fact...John F Kennedy jnr stayed in Hyderabad early 80s and his mother swam in the Banjara Hills Hotel! Hyderabad has a fascinating culture and history. Now whites have been discovering it [over 20 yers now] because of tech and computers.

If we fully consider what we have in our temples, we are still the richest as per latest statistics. Nevertheless, there should have been some actions from the concerned departments to bring back such lost treasures- at least the iconic ones!!! Many of the countries are practicing that.

Beautiful. Still about light . . . even though cuts are different from Western expectations. "Western" seems to be about putting as many diamonds into a single diamonds by using facets while Indian seems to be about folding 'light'.
