A quick anecdote. Frank Zappa saw the Mahavishnu Orchestra early on. Ruth Underwood was there and was blown away by them. She said when she saw Frank after the show he looked visibly shaken at what he had just witnessed. Shortly after that he hired George Duke and Jean- Luc Ponty and changed his sound completely to a jazz fusion vibe. When your performance shakes up Frank Zappa you know you're doing something right.

I saw them in concert at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, FL. I also saw the original Mahavishnu Orchestra 2 times in this era. Shakti a few years later was intense too. He said as far as he knew, he was first to use electric violin. He was quite friendly.👍 Oh, and I went to see John McLaughlin, Steve Morse opened for him, and Allan Holdsworth was sitting directly across the table from me. I believe the club was called The Golden Bear.

I first became aware of John McLaughlin in 1975 with the release of Visions of Emeralds Beyond when I was a very young just graduated from high school bass player. I searched backward to discover the much earlier work of Mahavishnu O. I was blessed to see John M. live and his updated group "Mahavishnu" in the late 70's, with Stanley Clark as the opening act. It was a spiritual experience that I will remember to my death. John and the rest of the group played with their eyes closed for most of the set. Tantric music on an astral plane!

Mahavishnu Orchestra and Weather Report are two of the greatest jazz fusion bands ever. I saw the original MO in 1973. Argent was the opening act. Afterwards John came out and said we can't find Billy Cobham. We will have to cancel the show. They rescheduled three days later and did an extra long show. Years later I met Billy Cobham at a drum Clinic and I asked him if he would remember missing a gig and he said yes because he'd missed so few. So I told him which one it was and he simply said "they never came for me."He told me on the road you're in your hotel room until someone comes and tells you you've got to go play now. I'll say this about John McLaughlin anybody whose name is the title of a Miles Davis song is the real deal.💫

There are other live versions of this very song available on RU-vid with better sound quality. Was very fortunate to see McLaughlin live with a trio of East Indian musicians. His entire onstage rig was his guitar and a laptop (running amp and FX simulators)! Sounded amazing! BTW, Jan Hammer’s setup was just a Fender Rhodes and a pair of Minimoog synthesizers. If you ever witness some ELP live footage, you’ll see a REAL spaceship console in the form of Keith Emerson’s monstrous Moog modular synth.

I've been a Mahavishnu fan since I saw exactly this band in Manchester England in 1973. There hasn't been a week when I haven't listened or watched anything by John M. Recently I saw John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension once again in Manchester. (I'm a Manc by the way....lol) but this time I was armed with something special. In 1974, when I was a student at Leeds Music College, I met a young school boy who played drums. We did a few jazz gigs together in and around Leeds, Yorkshire, but getting to play with him was difficult because he needed his dads help to get his kit around. Anyway the drummer left school, we remained in touch, and he went to play with Jack Bruce, then Alan Holdsworth, then Level 42, then JM's 4th Dimension. Yep the boy done well. Gary Husband. So having kept in touch with my friend for over 50 years, I got back stage passes, I met JM and he was totally wonderful. He made time to chat, enjoyed my conversation, and let me be photographed with him and my brother. My bucket list of people to meet has been now completed. I can die happy.

SO PSYCHED you're getting some Mahavishnu action! My friend turned me on to them in high school and they've been blowing my mind for almost 40 years! Not sure where I heard this anecdote, but they were on tour with Aerosmith in the 70s, maybe '74? The story is that before the show Aerosmith was partying in their green room and Steve Tyler thought he'd go and invite McLaughlin and Co. over to join them. He went to their room, opened the door, and they were all sitting in a circle on the floor meditating. Steve slowly backed out of the room and left them to it, which I give him credit for doing! Love this band so much, really out of sight!! Great video, thank you!

Great to see you exploring the Mahavishnu Orchestra. I did recommend them to you a few years ago in the comment section. I think I mentioned their albums The Inner Mounting Flame, Birds of Fire, Between Nothingness and Eternity (live), Apocalypse and Visions of The Emerald Beyond. Also, check out his work on My Goals Beyond, Extrapolation, Devotion, Love Devotion Surrender with Carlos Santana and Electric Guitarist. There are other acoustic albums of note too. I got into John McLaughlin after listening to Miles Davis' Bitches Brew and Tribute To Jack Johnson. When I listened to The Inner Mounting Flame for the first time in 1971 I was blown away. So many rock and jazz musicians owe a debt to Miles. Try to listen to the studio version. The sound on is live performance is a bit muddy. No, that's Jerry Goodman on the violin.
@FloatingAnarchy61
@FloatingAnarchy61 2 года назад
I love that 70's period from Miles. The reason I got into Bitches Brew was because of John McLaughlin. Jack Johnson is a brilliant album. Also the live ones Live Evil, Dark Magus and Agharta. I think a lot of 70's Miles appeals to traditional rock fans because it's so funky, reminds me of early Funkadelic. Of coùrse the Jazz purists hated it, Agharta for instance is always described as being impenetrable, but compared to something like Beefhearts Trout Mask Replica it's a breeze. Still can't get my head round On The Corner mind.
@waldorfstatler3129
@waldorfstatler3129 2 года назад
@@FloatingAnarchy61 Totally agree. It's ironic that jazz purists hated Miles jazz rock experiments because he did more for 'mainstream' jazz music appreciation than any other musician. It's thanks to Miles jazz rock albums that I got into bebop, hardbop, third-stream, West Coast, big band swing, latin jazz, 1920s and 1930s jazz, boogie woogie and all the rest. Indeed, many friends of mine who say they hate jazz unknowingly love the jazz chords, key changes (circle of fifths), blue notes, rhythms and stylings in much of today's music and when I point this out to them they are dumbfounded. Beefhearts' Trout Mask Replica 😂 A squid eating dough in a polyethylene bag is fast and bulbous, got me?
@FloatingAnarchy61
@FloatingAnarchy61 2 года назад
@@waldorfstatler3129 Agreed. Up until about 10 years ago the only jazz albums I owned were Kind Of Blue, Bitches Brew and Coltrane's A Love Supreme. I grew up around it as well as my Dad was a huge be bop fan. His heroes were Parker, Miles, Dizzy Gillespie and his ultimate hero Tubby Hayes, one of the finest temor sax players (along with vibes and flute) the UK produced. Coltrane's always been a blind spot for him though, even early stuff like Blue Train and Giant Steps . Basically he's not into anything after the mid 60's. I think that's why I resisted jazz for so long. You automatically reject your parents music when you're a kid (especially when I was into Punk back in the day). Sad story, a few years ago when my Dad was still able to get around, he used to get the bus over to Stroud (UK) where he"d often chat to a young busker who used to play sax. He decided to take some programmes over to show this lad (he's was a regular at Ronnie Scotts in the late 50's when it was still in Soho). The busker wasn't there so he decided to get something to eat and get the bus back. He was using a public toilet and some scumbag nicked the bag with the programmes in (including a Louis Armstrong one, when he first toured the UK in the 50's). You could tell he was gutted and trying to put a brave face on it. What really pissed me off was the scumbag probably dumped the programmes in the bin. My Dad said 'perhaps the poor fella was hungry'. I'm afraid he's got more compassion than I have.

After the first version of MO broke up, Jerry Goodman and Jan Hammer put out a duet album, Like Children, that is really good--had the original version of "Full Moon Boogie" that would later appear on the Jan Hammer/Jeff Beck live album. Probably the most versatile guitar virtuoso. John McLaughlin also forayed into World Fusion Music with the band Shakti. The live version of 'Joy' is certain to make jaws open wide.

Absolutely. Shakti live is equally insane with acoustic Indian instruments.

Narada Michael Walden is a top tier drummer- in the same league as Bill Bruford and Phil Collins. Check out the Mahavisnu Orchestra material with him including “Visions of the Emerald Beyond” and “Apocalypse” (the latter with George Martin producing and Michael Tillson Thomas directing the symphony).

I saw them the following year about a month after the concert captured on Between Nothingness & Eternity. It was the second or third concert I'd attended. This lineup dissolved shortly thereafter.

Jean Luc did play with them. And yes, they do sound very similar. Cobham is a BEAST! This is quite fine. More Mahavishnu, please. Oh......and some more Brand X! (maybe some Weather Report?)

Saw Mahavishnu Orchestra 5 times.. Some of my favorite Memories...... Should have worn ear plugs the second time I saw them, as they played very loud, and I had 3rd row center in a medium sized club in Norman Oklahoma.... That IS Jerry Goodman. John Luc Ponty was not with Mahavishnu until Apocalypse in 1974, and Visions of the Emerald Beyond which is my favorite album..... WE=mc2

Highly recommend Mahavishnu Orchestra Mark II - with Gayle Moran ( Mrs Chick Corea) on Keys and voice, Narada Michael Walden on Drums, Ralph Armstrong on Bass, and Jean Luc Ponty on Violin and of course John on Guitar.... my favorite album from that era Apocalypse is a beast of record.

The violinist is Jerry Goodman. This is the mark one lineup. The mark 2 lineup featured Jean Luc Ponty on violin and Narada Michael Walden on drums, Stellar muscians but I don't think they matched the sheer power of rhis mark one lineup.

One of the best bands of all time, a band that can only exist once. There were many who tried to copy and later fusion also became very shallow and there was a lot of smooth jazz, which in my opinion sounds more dusty today than Mahavishnu Orchestra, they are timeless.

For me, and just for me, the Mahavishnu Orchestra was the best electric instrumental band in the music history, so you can say than I'm a fan jajajaja!. I recommend you not an album or a piece, but a book: www.amazon.com/-/es/Walter-Kolosky/dp/0976101629. I read it and it is amazing the amount of data and stories that this book have, and the photos are very good documents too. For example, you never heard about the bass player again because after the MO separation, he abandon music to be photographer, seems to be that the MO experience was enough for him, they have shows almost every day. And was Hammer who instigated the separation, it was a "war of egos" between him and John. Gracias por compartir! Saludos desde Buenos Aires.

The Holdsworth comment was that when he heard McLaughlin, he thought he should quit playing guitar "and get a proper job.' You remembered what McLaughlin said of Holdsworth, at least near as I can remember word for word.

I chose this track because it focused more on Jerry Goodman and Billy Cobham (near the end). You can tell it's Goodman because of his use of harmonics on the violin (see 10:41 etc.). That was also him playing it through a wah wah, and on other songs he plucks lead lines like a guitarist. Before this group he used a wah wah in a group called The Flock. Later he played with the Dregs for a while. I intended pairing this up with a 1973 Frank Zappa performance which has a great Jean Luc Ponty solo on it. This would have represented a concert I saw with those two groups together, but unfortunately that marathon would have been 11 sec. too long - I eventually found another performance featuring Cobham with former Zappa keyboardist George Duke to replace this Mahavishnu one. It's a little blurry too, but it's really good.
