MrLiamTheLlama I disagree, it is of course amazing but I don’t think it carries as much power as it should, he doesn’t accent the first 3 notes. I think the Vienna Phil//Bernstein is better

Sway I totally agree, Tarkovi’s sound is second to none. I feel as though the VP/Bernstein edges it though just because it carries the right amount of ‘gusto’ required for this opening.
@guidobert
@guidobert 4 года назад
Theo Edwards i don‘t think so. I can‘t listen to the bad trumpet sound in Bernsteins version. Of course he played the accents clearer but it sounds very cold, stiff and not as flying and gentle like here. Tarkovi plays the opening also very energetic but also with so much easieness it‘s ridiculous how wonderful it is.

MrLiamTheLlama Listen to the LSO version conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas or CSO version conducted by Solti, those were really gd ones as well

Rattle is by far one of the best Mahler interpreters alive. His conducting of the 5th rivals that of Solti/Chicago performance with Herseth.

Bravo Sir Simon Rattle and BerlinPhil. Gustav Mahler is dynamic, vibrant, sound. The orchestration of Mahler is extremely complex. Mahler explores the full potential of the orchestra. All videos are saved in "favorites" and I watch it several times! Greetings from Brazil. Congratulations!

This part just came to my mind and I was trying to remember where it was from. I said to myself "Mahler. It has to be Mahler." I then reminded me that someone had sent me this video and I remembered it was the 7th symphony.

@sakari820 Beautifully said! I remember having the same experience as a teenager (a while ago!) with this very movement of Mahler's 7th. I had the speakers up full blast on my stereo and my face down in the carpet of my bedroom. My dad walked in and thought something was wrong! The first time is always the best, and I guess I"ll never forget it..

Actually, that's a very typical trick used in the professional orchestras everywhere (and thats includes me). If, for any reason, the second or the third trumpet (that have been for long time playing notes in medium register), fails this high C o just sound not enought loud, the first trumpet that have been playing in that high register for more time doubles the note for maintain the quality of sound. And it sounds fantastic!!. Is that negative?? I completely say "no"!!!!

Wieland Welzel and Raymond curfs are the right timpanists to play this piece. They play with more power. I heard bpo's bbc proms performance of this piece and the timpanist was rainer seegers. He is a great timpanist too, but i think sometimes he use way too low power.

One of my favorites. Great sound, but a little quick on the tempo. Mahler said that inspiration for this finale came from being rowed across a lake. Rattle has him in a speed boat.
