Welcome to our tutorial on mahogany wood graining, also known as faux bois. This is a technique that has been passed down through generations of craftsmen, and we are proud to share it with you today.
Mahogany wood graining is a decorative painting technique that is used to simulate the appearance of mahogany wood on non-wood surfaces. It's a technique that requires a deep understanding of the properties of the wood, as well as a passion for superior quality and attention to detail.
The tutorial will be led by master craftsman Ronald Layman, who has been trained in this technique for four generations, and who is proud to share his knowledge and expertise with you. You will learn how to create a realistic mahogany wood grain finish using paint and other materials. You will learn about the tools and materials required for this technique, including the various types of brushes, stains, and glazes that are used to create the rich, natural tones of mahogany wood.
Ronald Layman will instruct you step by step throughout the process
The tutorial will cover everything you need to know to create a beautiful, authentic mahogany wood finish on any surface, including preparation, base coating, graining and finishing. The tutorial will be step by step, easy to follow and understand, and suitable for all levels of experience.
This tutorial is not just about learning a technique, it's about experiencing the rich heritage and culture of craftsmanship that has been passed down through the centuries. It's about learning a skill that will help you create something truly beautiful and unique. So,

I'm a historic home remodeler in upstate NY looking to build my experience with painting and finishing. Your videos are brilliant! I'd really appreciate your opinion on a current project. I'm working with a Victorian era circular staircase with stained mahogany balusters, handrail & newell posts. The treads, risers & stringers, however, are painted pine. The client would like the treads to be finished in a way to match the color of the balusters. Inspired by your video, I'd like to faux bois the treads, of course with adequate practice beforehand. Do you think several coats of poly would provide the necessary durability for use on treads? I ordered the pigments & glaze on Amazon and already own a fine flogger, badger, mottler, etc. Would you consider sharing your recipe for the scumble glaze? Thank you for sharing your knowledge & expertise!

I am restoring a 1790 tavern with faux mahogany doors. In the mahogany grained door panels there are two faux inlay lines one inch from the edges. How would one create these faux inlay lines?

Ron, Greetings from Rosedale, Maryland. Looking to do this mahogany effect around the room of our new masonic lodge below the chair rails. I'm not seeing a Benjamin Moore color called "Orange Peel" but I am seeing a color called "Orange Appeal". Would that be it?
